Was this store fantastic? Not really - it's on par with the other tourist-trap "junk stores" along the beach. However... they have some stuff that's different, so if you don't find what you're looking for at the other bigger stores, maybe stop by this one to see what they have. We walked in and the person working there informed us that they were closed (just hadn't locked the doors yet). When we changed to sad faces, she asked what we were looking for. The birds are not happy and they are stuck in small cages. We got weird looks the whole time we were there earlier in the week I don't know why. Also I'm not a fan of beach stores that sell hermit crabs is artificial shells. read more

all of the birds are clearly abused. they are violent most of the time, and they also get scared of just children looking at them and scream when we looks ccs frd at them too long (clearly staff doesn't understand this when they got onto me and my siblings for looking at the cockatoo before it started screaming out of fear...) two birds are missing neck feathers (likely plucking them from stress) and have been missing them for a while. the big parrot is far too large to be in a small cage.... the monkey is dead and from what i've seen it was also stuck in a cage. the ice cream shop is incredibly small and not worth the prices... and smells bad read more

If I could give no stars I absolutely would. The animals are kept in extremely small cages and not allowed to fly anywhere at all. Very unwelcoming atmosphere, the staff constantly follows you around as if they are expecting every single customer to steal an item. The selection is gaudy with expensive and outdated items. I wish I could give this store 0 stars. This business is seriously neglecting the live animals they have living at the store. There is a monkey that is kept in diapers, as well as several large birds. The birds are kept in cages that are much too small for them, with little to no food or water, and the cages are filthy. The cages clearly have not been cleaned in a long time and are covered in feces. All of the birds showed extreme signs of anxiety and distress and have huge bare patches where the feathers are gone. Some spots even seemed raw or bloody and one bird was shaking uncontrollably. Overall, it was an appalling experience and my heart breaks for the animals there. I was so upset that I emailed Bay County animal control the second we left. read more

This is a case of a needed zero star. We walked from Laketown Wharf to an ice cream shop and found out it was closed for renovations (hrs are not updated in the app) so we looked up another place and this showed up. So we walked another .7 miles after we called to be sure it was open, and when we arrived they could not take credit card payments. I have a feeling their register was down? Unsure. When you walk in, the freezers for the ice cream box you in a very small area and it looks like premade bought tubs of ice cream. Not anything special and probably sitting there for a while. I would assume not worth the prices. At the end of all this, we left with no ice cream. read more

I wish i could give this negative stars. We came to see the monkey, like advertised, but it has been dead for over a year. This is nothing but a scam. It smelled so bad, probably because the birds cages weren't cleaned. The birds were making so much noise. We couldn't stay for long because of the smell. Im sure they don't take good care of the birds and they obviously didn't take care of the monkey. DONT ADVERTISE SOMETHING IF YOU DONT HAVE IT. This place is a joke, never going back. Please do not ever support this place. The poor animals being held here are kept in awful conditions, they are very clearly neglected. The birds are missing tons of feathers (a big sign of stress/ anxiety/ depression, they rip out their own feathers as a way to cope) pictured is a sugar glider in cage and there are monkeys as well. read more

I was really excited when I read about this place. Upon walking in the shop you're greeted immediately by a sweet African Grey. As soon as I looked at her I noticed that she was missing a few feathers... no big deal, maybe she's molting. Then the next bird I saw is a giant macaw who was almost naked. These birds are so stressed they are plucking their feathers. On the other side of the monkey cage was another African Grey who had plucked many of his feathers out as well and was shaking. As for the shop, they have a little of everything and the girl at the counter was friendly. I have no issues with the shop. Just the super stressed out birds. read more

This particular Monkey Shack location with the live monkey, was absolutely horrid and disgusting. As soon as you walk in you are overwhelmed by the odor of moth balls, this is likely for moths, insects and mice. Secondly the staff were walking around intimidating customers, some more than others, I was told to put my drink I brought in up front on the counter, mind you I had been there for 15 minutes already, at the same time my daughters were walking around pushing my 2 year old granddaughter with drinks themselves, they even talked to my granddaughter and daughters, didnt say a word about their drinks....then walked around to me and told me to put my drink up front or leave, this was clearly a case of prejudice, I observed them do this to another family while I was there, rude rude rude.
