I went here to get my nose pierced - I didn't have an appointment or anything and when I walked in the girl at the front just stared at me. I explained why I was there and she said, "the piercing guy doesn't come in until 4:30" and stared at me some more. I came back and that time when I walked in she was looking at a book of tattoo art and didn't even look up to acknowledge I was there. Luckily, Rozz the piercing guy came out and helped me and he was really cool. I was surprised by how little it hurt (I mean don't get me wrong, it really hurt, but it really felt no different than an ear piercing) and I was reassured by the fact that he said I can call and check with him to make sure the way that it's healing is normal. I'm not much of a body art person. I hate piercings and I do not have any tattoos. However, I really enjoyed going to Monkey Bones alongside my friend who was getting a tattoo. The artists were really cool and laid back, and while my friend was getting his tattoo done, the artist turned on a movie. He made the entire experience comfortable and fun, which helped because I'm really out of place in a tattoo parlor so it helped to be distracted with a movie. When my friend was finished, he gave specific directions on how to care for the new tattoo and seemed very pleased with his work. As for the results of the tattoo, I was impressed. For my 18th birthday my mom and I decided to get a tattoo that meant something to both of us. We finally decided on an idea that we both liked and decided to go get it done nearby in Dayton after asking around and talking to different people we found out that this is apparently the best place to get tattooed in the area (and some even say in the state). We emailed the business about a week before hand (they are usually extremely extremely booked up) and were told to come in and they might have an opening that day. When we walked in we were greeted by a very pretty nice woman with the cutest pink hair. She was super sweet and told us that she has an appointment but the guy is notorious for no showing so to stick around and she might be able to get us tattooed. As we were waiting we were looking through books of the other artists that worked there (Mike and Travis I think?) and they had some amazing incredible work in those books. The guy ended up not coming so she lead us to a very clean Pink room on the lower level. The environment was super nice and clean. There was artwork that Brooke, our tattoo artist had made and just pictures of the things that she liked on the wall it had a great aura and feel about it. She cleaned the bench and put on music for us to listen to while she was working and it was great. She was super nice during the whole thing and really funny. We learned that she's a fairly new tattoo artist and the tattoos came out great. They are still healing but are healing fairly nicely. She informed us of how to clean and care for them and if they need touched up after they heal we can come in and get it touched up for free. It's been about a month since we have gotten tattooed and both of ours are healing super great with only a little spot or two that looks lighter than the rest, but we do still have more time to heal. Received my first tattoo from here. Anthony was my artist. At first everything went great, communication was key and he met every expectation I needed to be confident in getting my tattoo. Tipped him 50% cause he did good work. However, I reached out about 6 months after for a touch up as my tattoo has faded and became mildly transparent, so I reached out cause I was excited about the piece on my arm getting that crisp look again. Anthony's communication became very poor and feels like he has put this on a non priority being that the 1st touch up is free. Definitely has made me feel he is uninterested in touching up my piece that he told me would be no problem in the beginning. So I tried again, about a NEW piece and got an immediate response and then once I mentioned about the touch up as well he has now put me on a back burner again. I get it, it can be busy especially with covid and I was understanding of that. But it just feels like a slap in the face. Very disappointed I still have yet to receive any emails back about my touch up. read more

Can't believe nobody's reviewed Monkey Bones yet!! I've been here a number of times for a few piercings and a tattoo, as well as a bunch of friends' tattoos/piercings... I love to watch :). I do have one piercing that was done at another shop, but that was only because it was in much closer proximity at the time- I should've gone to Monkey Bones though. It's always such a fun experience to go get piercings! Their piercer is a great guy, very sanitary and all that jazz. And since he's pierced me and my friends many times I always feel much more at ease because I've grown to trust this guy with shoving long sharp needles in my body. Also, if you have problems with your piercing afterwards you can go in for advice and he'll even change your jewelry for free after your piercing is healed up. I was also tatted here once by Spyder; I went in with a printout of what I wanted so he didn't actually draw anything up for me, but he was also a great guy and fun to talk to, he even put up with me being picky about everything, which I appreciated. The tattoo in the end looked great and he even gave me free packets of ointment to put on it which I thought was pretty rad. Their pricings for everything aren't too bad at all but make sure you remember to tip!! I'm a big fan of this place and I plan to stay loyal to it for the rest of my future tattoos/piercings that I plan to get. :) read more

I got a watercolor succulent done by Brook over some scars. The first round was a nearly 6-hour sitting that she did by hand and my skin did NOT like the colors apparently. Brook did a gorgeous job regardless and we scheduled an appointment in a month to go over it again. The second time, the color took like a dream and it only took about an hour. I'm only going to Brook from now on for my tattoo needs. Her art is wonderful, she's so charismatic and it was an overall pleasant experience. Call ahead and book though, she's in great demand. I plan on having a cute little portrait of my cat done soon by her. She's not too expensive either; a 6-hour sitting at another place was $600 whereas Brook quoted me $200 and stuck to it regardless that it took much longer. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience at Monkey Bones! I have two other tattoos, both of which I had done at the same place in Florida, so I thought the experience I had at the previous tattoo place was what they were all like. Boy was I wrong. I called ahead to inquire about myself and a friend coming in to get tattoos together and they suggested we come in to show them what we each wanted, get a quote, and make an appointment, as they were pretty booked. We went in one evening and were pleasantly surprised to find they had a cancellation that evening and could do our tattoos right then. While the tattoos were being drawn up, the guy who does the piercings came out, sat down, and chatted with us. He was hilarious and we really enjoyed chatting with him. Mike is who worked with us, and he was so patient with us making adjustments to the images, making sure they were exactly how we wanted them. He was amazing. At the place I got my previous tattoos, I felt very unwelcome because I didn't fit with the typical patrons in the shop since I'm not visibly tatted up or pierced. Not the case here. Mike was so personable and he made the whole experience as comfortable as possible. Talking to him was like talking to someone you've known for years. Our tattoos came out FANTASTIC; the one I had done is easily my favorite out of all three I have. I'm already itching to get another tattoo and I will most certainly be having it done here at Monkey Bones. So this review is just about piercings NOT tattoos...in fact I know a lot of people, including my mother, who love the artists there and loves her tattoo. In December, 9 months ago, I went in to get my triple forward helix pierced. Rozz is super cool and nice and he did the piercing and everything went well. Once I got home and looked more closely at my piercing, I noticed that the top one was a little bit higher than it should be. I told myself it was just swelling (as it was pulsing really bad) and it would go away. Well, it never did. So now my forward helix piercing is uneven which is something I will have forever AND it cost over $100. Yikes... After a while, I made peace with it and bought blue opal earrings to replace the silver rods. I brought them in to get them put in, as its free to do so. I was in there for 5 minutes and everything went well. Then, I get home and notice that on the bottom one there were still some threads showing, meaning it wasn't screwed on enough. Something easily noticeable?Disappointed, I went back the next day and asked if it was screwed on enough (as a rhetorical question) and Rozz looked at it and told me it was. So I assumed it was just normal. Fast forward to now, I was cleaning my piercing and saw that there were way more threads showing on my piercing than before. Concerned, I went to a local piercing and tattoo shop in my college town 2 1/2 hours away from Dayton. Their piercer tried screwing the ball back in and after so many attempts, he ended up taking out the piercing from my ear and looking at it. Then, he told me that the earring is stripped. He then had to put a silver rod in for the mean time. He then asked me where I got it done at and I told him Dayton. He laughed and said he has a friend who also does piercings and went down to Dayton to work for a bit and came back and said to never trust or get piercings in Dayton (he really didn't say why though). Well, there goes my confidence. SO, how frustrating is it that I spent $125 on piercings that weren't done right (spacing) and then when I get replacement earrings, those aren't done right either? And then when I asked about them, I wasn't told that my earrings were ruined?? I won't be coming back to Monkey Bones for piercings read more

Tattoo virgin here. Wanted a small one on my wrist and polled locals. Hands down monkey bones had rave reviews. Went with a friend we both had tattoos done by Mike. Loved the atmosphere - they were great, friendly, made everyone who walked in the door feel welcome. Really take pride in what they do and it shows.
