Sea salt and caramel -- Delicious! Christmas gifts from friends in Lubec.
    Michael D.

Friends of ours moved to Lubec some 15 years ago, and soon discovered Monica's Chocolates, and we have been the happy beneficiaries ever since. They just sent us a box of sea salt and caramels for Christmas. Delicious, fresh-tasting, perfect texture, intensely flavorful. Went there once, some 7 or 8 years ago, in time for the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival. Don't remember much about the actual store, except it is in a house, with a huge selection of delicious handmade chocolates, as well as gift items from Peru, where owner Monica is from.

Quite simply Monica has the best chocolate candies. They taste very fresh and it makes it difficult not to have more than one if you do not watch yourself. She also has a variety from peppermint patties to turtles with various types of nuts. There is dark, white and milk chocolate. It's all there. You can purchase for yourself or ship because if you buy for a loved one its quite possible the candy will not make the ride home unless you are strong, very strong.

This gem is a great stop with lots of options for every sweet tooth! It was honestly overwhelming to see all the flavors and varieties available. I bought a variety of items as gifts back to Texas and they were well reviewed all around! Personally I got chocolate covered marshmallows that were amazing cold from the fridge. Huge bonus for me is there was a large selection of sugar free options for diabetics. I was able to bring my grandfather a variety of tasty treats that were safe for his dietary needs. Super close and handy to stop by if you are going/coming from the Quoddy Head Light House. Met Monica herself when checking out and she was a delight. Definitely will make another visit when I am back in Maine.

This is a beautiful, well laid-out store (in a white, private home) right on Route 189. The displays are thoughtfully arranged and the chocolates are worth the slightly steep price tags. The marzipan cremes were my favorite, followed by the raspberry wine truffles. My husband loved the nut clusters in white and milk chocolate. I came for the chocolates but stayed because the man behind the counter was on a personal call for about 15 minutes. All the while I waited near the register with chocolates in hand. He was very lucky that I wasn't keen on stealing his identity (or stealing from the store), because he gave out all his personal information on the phone (it sounded like he was applying for car insurance) and often had his back to me. He seemed completely unfazed by my presence, and definitely was in no rush to help me. When he abruptly ended the call, he made no apologies. Huh... Luckily the chocolates were worth the wait. Make sure you stop here on your way into town. But if the clerk is on the phone, you might as well come back later. It might be a while.

I absolutely love this place, but I'm an admitted chocolate fiend. The truffles and any of the chocolate are amazing, and they will randomly give samples. They are not cheap, but they reflect the quality of the product. The store can get a bit cramped if there are a lot of people. There is a room with clothing items made from South America, like jackets, scarves, etc. They also have an assortment of Raye's mustard and other food items. If you are in the Lubec area, definitely check this out.

Inside of Almond Bonbon; bittersweet chocolate, almonds, and Peruvian filling... fabulous!

Stopped in on a whim... so glad we did! The shop is filled with chocolate galore as well as other gifts and Peruvian items. When we entered a young lady offered us a sample which we happily accepted as she told us about the chocolates and other products. I was very impressed with her knowledge and professionalism. My only complaint with the shop was that there was so much to choose from it was hard to narrow it down to a few purchases! Happily writing this review as I eat my chocolates... trying not to eat them all in one sitting. Put Monica's on your must stop list while in Lubec!

Incredible chocolates, especially love the blueberries covered with dark chocolate but beware as they are on the pricey side.

They also have beautiful jewelry and alpaca clothing - expensive, yes, but from the look and feel of it, super high quality.

It's a French bakery on Grand Manan island and is very popular with both locals and tourists alike. As soon as the ferry docked we drove straight over. Got there on a Tuesday morning a bit after 11 and the line was already five people deep. The smell as you walk in...heavenly!! They sell an assortment of freshly baked bread and pastries. By the time I arrived the regular croissants were already sold out. There was still quite a lot of selection though. I went a bit crazy and got a bunch of stuff. Hey.. I'm on vacation!! :) We got the Saint John river bread which is their bestseller and it was delicious. The best way I can describe it is it looks like a round sourdough loaf but it's multigrain deliciousness. The outside crust just the right amount of crunch and the inside soft and warm just out of the oven! We went down to the local grocery store and picked up a couple different cheeses to go with the bread. What a great lunch! I also got the following which I had later for snack and dinner: -spinach and feta pastry: so good!! The filling reminded me a bit of spanakopita but the pastry dough was flaky and crunchy. -egg and cream cheese pastry: same type of dough as above but the filling tasted like a western omelette. -chocolate croissant: amazing!! Just like the ones I had in Paris!! The chocolate to dough ratio was just right!! -apple turnover: my husband declared this the best he's ever had! The pastry so flaky and the filling not overly sweet. So we went back an hour before closing and they pretty much had sold out of everything but had some macaroons and ginger cookies left. We got some cookies for the ferry ride back and they also impressed us! Soft and not too sweet and the ginger flavour not overpowering. I'm so glad we found this bakery. It's a legit French bakery and brings me right back to when I travelled in France. This place should be an absolute must for anyone traveling to Grand Manan!

Thanks to Raye's Mustard--a storefront right downtown featuring allll of their mustards and more. It's amazing that Raye's makes their mustards RIGHT THERE, in Eastport--and not only that, the same family has done so for over 100 years. Everything is handcrafted with a stone-ground mustard mill and made in small batches. If you're a mustard aficionado you'll find everything from plain yellow mustards to various kinds of stone-ground; mustards made with beer, and others with wine; spicy mustards, sweet mustards, peppery mustards; seasonal blends including things like (of course) Maine blueberries and cranberries. What's great is that you can buy regular-sized jars and also little ones, and there are various sets and gift baskets to choose from too. And of course, you can sample anything you want! The staff are all super friendly and knowledgeable, and just ask for a cracker or pretzel with whatever you want to try, and they'll oblige. One thing I should augment here is the use of the term "plain yellow mustard," above: Rayes' versions of the classic yellow (for all of you who, like me, grew up on French's) include the Down East Schooner as well as the Aroostock Gold, and WOW. It's like imagine all the best addictive qualities of French's and punch up and freshen up the tanginess! So basically I came away with big box of mustards that will be shared out for the holidays--I'm delighted to have been able to pick them up right there at the source, but the good news is that you can order online, too!
