This place is a gem. I've never had such a grand experience with a chocolate store. They have more than chocolate but their heart is the melting goodness. Monica is the treasurer of this castle. Amazing spot- I would even say to go out of your way to check it out! They have a wide variety of items from chocolates to earrings to clothes to kid toys, etc. A lot of their items are either made in Peru or come from Peru. It honestly felt like walking in an adult candy store. Service was phenomenal. We were greeted right away and the cashier girl told us some cool fun facts about the spot! I bought some truffles for $14 and I honestly wish I would've bought way more. We got other chocolates (not pictured) and they were all delicious. First of all, the handmade chocolates are incredible. Not only that, Monica is a gem! So sweet and I am in awe of how she taught herself how to make the chocolates and how she build up her business. Quite simply Monica has the best chocolate candies. They taste very fresh and it makes it difficult not to have more than one if you do not watch yourself. She also has a variety from peppermint patties to turtles with various types of nuts. There is dark, white and milk chocolate. It's all there. You can purchase for yourself or ship because if you buy for a loved one its quite possible the candy will not make the ride home unless you are strong, very strong. read more

You're welcomed by staff bearing samples of luscious chocolates when you enter this elegant shop in the Down East town of Lubec. Gracious Monica, a native Peruvian, is usually on hand to chat. The service is attentive, but not overbearing. The chocolates are amazing. My personal favorites are the needhams, a traditional Maine chocolate with a coconut-cream filling made with mashed potato (get the kind topped with Maine wild blueberries -- yum!). Browse the shop while sipping on rich, delicious Peruvian hot chocolate -- you'll never want chocolate from a mix again. There's also a room of Peruvian crafts, mostly fine knitted wear. Monica's is a 3-hour drive from where I live, so I'm glad that they do mail order. read more

This is a beautiful, well laid-out store (in a white, private home) right on Route 189. The displays are thoughtfully arranged and the chocolates are worth the slightly steep price tags. The marzipan cremes were my favorite, followed by the raspberry wine truffles. My husband loved the nut clusters in white and milk chocolate. I came for the chocolates but stayed because the man behind the counter was on a personal call for about 15 minutes. All the while I waited near the register with chocolates in hand. He was very lucky that I wasn't keen on stealing his identity (or stealing from the store), because he gave out all his personal information on the phone (it sounded like he was applying for car insurance) and often had his back to me. He seemed completely unfazed by my presence, and definitely was in no rush to help me. When he abruptly ended the call, he made no apologies. Huh... Luckily the chocolates were worth the wait. Make sure you stop here on your way into town. But if the clerk is on the phone, you might as well come back later. It might be a while. read more

This gem is a great stop with lots of options for every sweet tooth! It was honestly overwhelming to see all the flavors and varieties available. I bought a variety of items as gifts back to Texas and they were well reviewed all around! Personally I got chocolate covered marshmallows that were amazing cold from the fridge. Huge bonus for me is there was a large selection of sugar free options for diabetics. I was able to bring my grandfather a variety of tasty treats that were safe for his dietary needs. Super close and handy to stop by if you are going/coming from the Quoddy Head Light House. Met Monica herself when checking out and she was a delight. So unassuming from the outside, but delightful and welcoming once you enter. A greeter (mask, shield, hand sanitizer for all during CoVid times) handed us a basket and explained the store layout (as we saw Monica herself scurrying around). The handmade chocolates (no usual sampling during pandemic) were nicely packaged, clearly marked and priced reasonably for hand made candies. Plentiful variety and something in every price range. Monica is from Peru and sells hand made Peruvian alpaca sweaters and winter outerwear. She also carries a large variety of tasteful, yet unique, jewelry from Peru as well. All jewelry was priced per category. All bracelets one price, same for earrings and necklaces. I did not inspect the jewelry up close since I was only there for the chocolate, but was impressed at the selection, so I cannot speak to the quality. The chocolates are truly delicious and nothing like the mass produced, which I'm not too proud to eat under most circumstances We purchased the semi sweet truffles (I love when i can make out different ingredient flavors, not just sugar and cocoa) sea salt caramels (not too chewy and not too gooey) sand dollars (turtles). All were delicious and ample in size. We also purchased a Guatemalan coffee they carry from Bold Coast and a jar of Raye's mustard. We will enjoy those at a later date. Monica sells these other Maine products and sources as many local ingredients as possible. If you like quality chocolates and understand what you need to pay to enjoy them, then you should stop at Monica's when you are in Lubec! read more

I purchased the Sand Dollars, and it was only with some measure of restraint that any made it back to the cabin. Other items are also sold, including clothing and crafts from Peru. Legitimately some of the best chocolate I've had on this side of the Atlantic and it just happens to be on a near-deserted highway at the end of the world (or at least the continental United States). We were pretty gleeful upon entering to be served delicious samples. We tried their bonbons - filled with almonds and a Peruvian dulce de leche-like cream - sinfully good. Then we sampled the blueberry wine truffles - blueberries, wine and chocolate seem like they were made for each other. After that, we knew we had to bring some home. I mean, how often are you in a chocolate shop where everything is made in house? Deciding what to get was no easy task considering the crap ton of choices that all looked so good - if it didn't break the bank I probably would have opted for one of everything. The shapes are really cool and the seashells looked so realistic that it took me a minute to realize it was actually chocolate. We ended up taking the peanut butter and caramel filled sea cucumbers, which I thought were pretty hilarious. I mean, I have seen quite a few chocolate animals in my day, but never one shaped like a sea cucumber. We also took home some of their Maine Needhams with potato, coconut, and blueberries, which I have yet to try but am pretty damn excited to do so. They also have beautiful jewelry and alpaca clothing - expensive, yes, but from the look and feel of it, super high quality. I was kind of shocked that we were the only ones there. I mean, I know it's a little out of the way, or let's be real - seriously out of the way, but it's honestly worth the seven hour drive from Boston. But hey, even if you're not ready for that kind of commitment - they have a website where they ship to the rest of the country! We stopped into Monica's Chocolates after seeing a ton of great reviews on another unmentionable website. It was totally worth the visit. We met Monica and she was delightful. Everyone we met in the Lubec area seemed to want to tell us their life story and Monica was no exception. Her story is a reminder of how our country has provided amazing opportunities for some of its immigrants. It sounds like with luck, hard work, and the support of native Lubecians (?), Monica has made it happen with her chocolates. She seems like a very nice person with a well-organized and seemingly well-run store. We have been enjoying her chocolates which she also offers samples of in her store. I recommend stopping by and checking out her wares which include some well-priced jewelry and other items. When we entered a young lady offered us a sample which we happily accepted as she told us about the chocolates and other products. I was very impressed with her knowledge and professionalism. My only complaint with the shop was that there was so much to choose from it was hard to narrow it down to a few purchases! I absolutely love this place, but I'm an admitted chocolate fiend. The truffles and any of the chocolate are amazing, and they will randomly give samples. They are not cheap, but they reflect the quality of the product. The store can get a bit cramped if there are a lot of people. There is a room with clothing items made from South America, like jackets, scarves, etc. They also have an assortment of Raye's mustard and other food items. This shop is legitimately my favorite place I have visited in this state. The chocolate is hand made in the kitchen (which you can request a tour of and see the process) using recipes she perfected herself. The jewelry within the shop is absolutely stunning, unique, and extremely affordable. Throughout the shop are various items that of which you would never see anywhere else; among them are sweaters, bags, backpacks, and little decorations that make you smile. You can ask for a sample of the chocolate and you will surely not regret it. We can only echo and update briefly what the previous Yelper wrote. This is a delightful little shop alongside Highway 189 just outside downtown Lubec. The specialty is chocolates, diverse and delicious, but surprisingly the stock includes some wonderful, lovely jewelry and clothing. Monica is Peruvian, and on her trips home she acquires a variety of native goods which she sells for quite reasonable prices. We found a gorgeous brown alpaca sweater for $125 and several appealing and slightly exotic pieces of jewelry (both under $30). Monica is a very pleasant shop owner, and she makes a mean hot chocolate. We're so glad we stopped by and suggest you shouldn't miss it. read more

If you find yourself on the road to Lubec and onward to Canada, take a few minutes and stop in at Monica's and buy all the chocolate. Yes, all of it because it is that good. I don't kid when it comes to chocolate. While I didn't have the opportunity to meet Monica, her assistant was there and brought out a tray of chocolate samples (easiest way to win me over as a consumer). Yum. My husband and I tasted a variety of bonbons, each seemingly better than the last. We walked out of there a little poorer but with a sizable bag of chocolates. Parents back home in landlocked states (Oklahoma and Nebraska) got apricot and almond bonbons, bourbon filled truffles, and dark chocolate turtles as a way of saying thank you for watching our dogs and child for a week. I loaded up on dark chocolate pecan bonbons and a dark chocolate molded lobster...all gone before we arrived back at our rental home an hour away. Mission accomplished. read more

My husband and I stopped in at Monica's Chocolates while traveling through Down East Maine to Canada. When passing through Lubec, we were pleasantly surprised to find a chocolate shop open in the middle of winter! Fom the moment we walked through the door, we felt so welcome. After chatting with the proprieter (Monica), who was very attentive and enthusiastic about her chocolates, we sampled some of her unique chocolate creations while she told us about how she had arrived in Lubec, Maine years ago (from Peru!) and was inspired to start up a chocolate shop in one of the most remote areas of Maine. We browsed through the shop and selected an amazing variety of chocolate creations we'd never seen anywhere else. My favorite is her blueberry truffles and my husband likes her chocolate "sea urchins" best. We made sure to pick up a couple of bags of her brightly packaged Peruvian bonbons to take back to our family. Our vist to Monicas was decidely the brightest spot to our week-long travels! My wife and I were driving down Rt 189 on our way to Lubec. I said to my wife, "I'm hungry, I could eat a piece of chocolate", thinking that a convenience store might be nearby. I barely had the words out of my mouth when THERE IT WAS, Monica's Chocolates. I had to turn around and go back, not believing what I had seen. And there it was, a chocolate oasis in the middle of a desert. We went in, we tasted the chocolate, and we were hooked. And the shop has more. Peruvian sweaters, Jewelry, coffee, and more, all of the items my wife likes to buy. We spent about 90 minutes in the shop, talking to Monica, learning about her life and business, and celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I have not been to Monica's Chochlates in Lubec in person. However I purchased Blueberry Wine Truffles from Monica's at a local winery in Bar Harbor Maine. They were scrumscious! I plan a visit to Monica's on our next daytrip up North in Lubec Maine! Probably cheaper there than at the wineries.
