Call me " old school" if you must (I also still send "snail mail" regularly!). As a hefty chunk of cash was headed my way via the Western Union express, I headed to a location to pick up my funds. First venturing to Ralph's across the street from Area Check Cashing, I learned that the grocer's Western Union was "out of order". Wow! Really? I suppose no one would notice except for me. The customer service clerk suggested I head over to Area Check Cashing, as they also have Western Union. Area Check Cashing is one of those places that we tend to scrounge our noses at: payday loans, car registrations, Western Union transactions, etc. The establishment doesn't offer much in looks (a large, empty lobby and some teller windows/counter) but I suppose it doesn't have to in terms of the services rendered . That's fine, I was in a hurry anyway and needed money quick! As I was in line, I noticed the fees for payday loans which is higher than the usual small percentage typical at other locations (usually $100 results in a fee of about $3). Other services such as car registrations (not connected to the DMV) clock in at $30. Another detail that didn't escape my eye? The loonngggg line which formed behind me of the strangest, oddest characters. First, the long line was a direct result of the slow-as-a-snail service provided by Area Check Cashing. One of the two women at the counter seriously moved her hands so slowly, I thought I was living life in slow motion. Plus, she made sure every document was folded perfectly to the exact millimeters. I was about to go crazy! Second, the other patrons didn't cease to make me quite uncomfortable and clutch my purse a bit tighter. As indicated, the service is terrible. I was told to fill out a form to receive my funds (I've never had to do this at Ralph's) and then rudely told to step aside while filling it out (like I was the one holding up the line!). When it was my turn again, the Molasses-Slow-Lady was stiff and lacked any courtesy in her voice. She would walk away to make copies or help the other girl and not even tell me to hold on. I felt like I was either in the midst of a practical joke or at a government welfare office. At least I FINALLY received my funds and was on my way. As "ghetto" as Ralph's can sometimes be, I will stick to their Western Union service (as long as it is working!). I've also had better payday loan experiences at other check-cashing places. Skip this location. You can probably send a resume, get interviewed, and hired at a bank to cash your own checks before you receive prompt service at Area Check Cashing.
