So when…read moreyou're passing through (because that's likely what you'll be doing when visiting here), you'll find it is crammed full of people surveying the good quality kilts. With a tea room, a ton of tartan and an genuine old loom for you to peruse, it is like a blown up concept of Scottish life. It seems to me to be a physical example of the preconception many foreigners may have of Scotland. Countries full of ex pats, generally interested in the history here, would love this place as it hosts a number of family tartans, old crests and harks back to Jacobean times. There's enough shortbread available here to last you a nuclear winter, not to mention a Best of Bagpipes collection playing out from the CD booth. There's also a historial book collection and some stuffed toy highland cows, aww. But there's something earthy and homely about this Woollen Mill that comforts me everytime I visit. Perhaps it's because we came here every year when we went on our annual family road trip in the 90s. Or perhaps it's the relaxed pace of the retired couples who genuinely get so much enjoyment out of the merchandise. Or it could be the lovely, tasty tea room which offers service with a smile, and some damn scrumptious scones. Whatever it is, it has a charm, and with its window into one side of Scottish culture it is surely a crowd pleaser for the tourists.

When walking into this shop you feel immediately like a lady, as this place sells ladies things…read more I was last minute wedding accessories shopping and I realised, only by looking into the shop window, I didn't have a necklace. The one on the half a head dummy looked beautiful, ok my description of the display may not be selling it to you but it was a really pretty and unusual looking piece of jewellery. This shop is probably more mother of the bride by looking at the outfits on display. They do have a good range of accessories, from fasinators, handbags, scarfs and jewellery. The ladies were very helpful and the lady who initially served me got the necklace from the shop window for me. It was a little more than I would have liked to have spent but it really was pretty and would go perfectly with my outfit. So next time you're in Hamilton ladies have a wee look. It does feel very intimate as it's a small sized shop but it's very brightly lit and you can see in through the window display, so I would window shop first before heading in. By the way there's no way you'll get 'Madonna Voguing' here, a wee disappointed but I'll get over it. I just keep it all in my head instead. Vogue!

My perpetual tour of 'girly shops' continues…read more Initially the emphasis was on fun and funky accessories in this shop but now, as well as the handbags and jewellery they have a selection of glamorous and glitzy clothes too. Basically it does what it says on the tin! The goods are laid in out by colour, which I like, the emphasis being on colourful tops studded with the ubiquitous sequin and sexy dresses. You know what I'm trying to say. Hopefully. For such unusual clothes, prices are very reasonable starting at around £20 with regular sales.

The great thing about this Matalan is the size. It's huge! It was made even bigger a couple of…read moreyears ago when a new section, M Party, was joined onto the store, making it one of the biggest units in the retail park. The thing I never really understand about Matalan is the need for cards. Why do they have them? It used to be that you had to have a card to buy anything, but on my more recent visit, I noticed they had slackened up on that, and it's now used for more of a rewards card than store ID. This store has everything; kids, women's and men's clothes, shoes and home ware. They have a brilliant underwear section and sell branded bras at less than half price. They even have Calvin Klein boxers at £9 a pack, which is less than half price, ideal for Xmas or Birthday pressies! I used the services that M Party provides for my 21st birthday party, and had cream and pink balloons with lovely little shimmery weights and bits and bobs for decorating the hall, all for under £100, which was amazing value! You have to collect the balloons yourself but that wasn't a problem. They have table decorations, age specific decorations and buffet ware, which is all fairly priced and available in every colour imaginable! They also make up banners if you want them, although I felt they were a bit pricey. Huge store with loads of bargains! The clothes in Matalan are getting nicer by the season, and I would highly recommend it for summer holiday clothes.

Eyecandy is a great little boutique on Clarkston Road, they have outfits which are all very…read morereasonably priced and they also have accessories such as belts and fancy scarves to go with them. The window display is ever changing and everything always looks very sophisticated. The clothes always look great quality and even though the clothes aren't ridiculously expensive, they look like they should cost a lot of money. My aunt has bought a few items from here and I particularly like a couple of scarves she's purchased from Eyecandy. Whenever I have ventured in, I usually have a browse at their costume jewellery, I got my mum a lovely brooch from here a few years ago. They have a good selection and many unusual pieces too. Great little place and the staff are really friendly too I also adore the name!

Next at Straiton has recently expanded and is much better! The new store is an absolute labyrinth…read moreand I found myself getting lost many times. On the ground floor, there is womenswear, childrenswear, furniture and Beaverbrooks the jeweller. When you walk in, there is a big double height ceiling which really opens up the place! Upstairs pays host to menswear and homewares. There is also a Paperchase (yay!) and a small Costa Coffee. (yay again!) There are also toilets up here which are clean, spacious and bright. My favourite thing has got to be the furniture department because you are free to sit on the sofas and pretend you live a perfect life while you sip your Costa coffee. I was very impressed with the size of the shop and the Paperchase and Costa were doing a roaring trade with queues stretching out round through the shop. I'm glad that the old cramped store is now gone and we have this new one to serve us!
