The food is pretty good and authentic to its style origins which is pleasing. There are some downfalls of course. While the wait staff are genuine and nice, the service is pretty off putting, there is some major disorganisation happening in this place, like staff not really sure with what dish is going where. And the table service is definitely lacking. Also the decor is so average its barely worth a mention, but I find that a lot of Asian cuisine places don't really prioritise the fancy decor thing so I didn't mind. I would go here if you are after some nice Asian cuisine for an affordable price, and aren't too bothered by table service etc. Don't expect fine dining - be realistic and you will enjoy.

A quick search brought up Gu Xiang Malaysian Restaurant. It's in a random small strip mall that also has a few restaurants and a Eastern Fresh grocery store. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around noon) for lunch. The place has plenty of tables and it was about half full. Completely full of Asian clientele. The servers speak Cantonese and English. Service is good here; just catch the waitress attention and you can get refills on your tea and water. The menu is massive; appetizers, noodles, noodle soup, fried rice, nasi lemak, dishes on rice, pork/beef, chicken, tofu, fish (market price), prawns, squid, vegetables (seasonal price) and others. All the meat and vegetable dishes are very pricey. - 2x Roti canai (#116) ($3.00 NZD each) - thought these come with a curry sauce dip but nope. You just get the roti canai. These were greasy but had some sweet tones to it that I wasn't expecting. Order this with the chicken curry ($12.90 NZD) instead. - Loo mai gai (#9) ($5.00 NZD) - this was pretty glutinous and had a thick, sweet oyster like sauce. We were intrigued by the photo of it on the wall. Just average. - Curry laksa with chicken curry (#21A) ($13.90 NZD) - the broth was creamy but not very spicy. I'm pretty picky with my laksa; this was better than I expected it to be. They throw in two types of noodles (thin vermicelli and yellow lo mein), tofu puffs and bean sprouts. Get it! - Seafood noodle (#20C) ($11.80 NZD) - the broth is sweet and tasted like wonton soup broth. You get yellow noodles, mix of seafood, bok choy and bean sprouts. Definitely a Chinese influenced dish. Pretty mediocre, nothing special in my books. - Hainese chicken on rice (#31) ($11.80 NZD) - the chicken was hot and tender. Came with delicious side of rice, a vegetable soup and chili garlic sauce. Simple but satisfying. Stick with the Malaysian dishes. Good portion sizes. 3.5 stars.

The guy who owns the place is super friendly and the space is very light and cheerful. This cafe is adjoined to the Living Edge store, so once you're finished in the cafe you can go for a browse. Parking at the cafe is onsite which is very convenient and there is seating both inside and out. They have a breakfast and lunch menu and the food is well priced and good quality. The staff here are very obliging when it comes to the menu and any dietary requirements you have, just let them know and they do the best to accommodate you. I have been accommodated for on several occasions. Great service, coffee and food, location is odd but if you're in the area, it's not too bad.

It's a corner store on the end of a block of shops and they've renovated it really classically. I love their outdoor furniture, it's fresh, comfy and I felt like I could stay their all day. Their wild rice salad caught my eye and it smelt amazing when the waitress placed it down in front of me. It was an asian style salad with chickpeas, vegetables and loads of fragrant flavours. The staff were really friendly and you could tell it's a community café as the waitress was having a good chat to one of the customers and actually knew him by name! Good on them. They're doing a good job and I'll definitely be stopping in next time I'm in St Heliers.

Overlooking Monte Cecilia Park at the top of the slight slope, there's a stable peace about the place. Now going back to Homestead cafe for food, the simple charm was still there. But the food, the food! The menu boasts half a page of all day breakfast including granola, shaksuka with poached eggs and slow cooked mushroom - all under which were the famous Homestead crumpet options. For lunch though, we opted for a little fancy and it didn't take long to settle on braised oxtail with savoy cabbage, cauliflower puree and salsa verde. The first mouthful was an instant wow. The meat fell effortlessly off the bone and as cliche as it sounds, melted in my mouth. It got rich pretty fast though and towards the end, I slightly regretted ordering a crumpet to share. We ordered a lemon curd crumpet with lemon curd, labneh and fresh coconut to tickle our sweet tooth fancy, all washed down with Flight coffee. Definitely ambitious after the oxtail but I felt like I couldn't leave Homestead without sticking my fork in their crumpets. I would describe the food as fancy home-made food. They're those comforting classic dishes you may find at a planned dinner party, elevated to another level by chef Sam Mannering - food writer and cookbook author. This cafe is highly raved for a reason!

Overall the pricing is high for what you get but if you nab a table outside the view makes it worth your while. Service is a bit intermittent, a couple of the staff were incredible! When the rest felt like they didn't want to be there. Seating inside is minimal and if it's busy you'll feel like you're standing on top of someone while they eat when you're waiting to pay, outside is a lot better, more spacious sitting on a table on the veranda. They have heaters and wind blockers for the cold days if you're worried! Overall my experience was great at homestead, the menu was okay but only a few items called out to me - I would probably go back :)

The smoothies are really nice but I didn't find the coffee was very memorable. Nice place to go for brunch or a quick lunch as the orders are ready pretty quickly. Be prepared to shell out a lot on a public holiday as they have a surcharge - and when a regular breakfast is about $20 anyway ad extra 15% is pretty steep. Also, while the cafe has a nice interior the commercial area around Constellation Drive is not very inspiring.
