Fried Thick Egg Noodles with Shrimp ($16) & BBQ Combination Rice ($20)
Allison L.

Solid spot for HK cuisine. I've been to the Mira Mesa location but I'm glad they opened one closer to me! The interior is clean and modern, much larger and nicely decorated with Hong Kong pictures and street signs. Got seated right away when we came for a Sunday lunch around noon. Found parking but it fills up quickly. We ordered via a QR code at the table and service was quick. BBQ Combination rice (4/5): good amount of cha siu (honey BBQ pork) and roast duck, lots of rice but I wish there was more bok choy/veggies to balance it out. Cha siu was kinda dry and needed more sauce Fried thick egg noodles + shrimp (4.5/5): came with a lot of shrimp, which were plump and fresh. a little oily Portions are huge for the price and my sister and I had leftovers. I would come back to try their cafe items!

I love this new location. It's so spacious and am loving the HK cafe decor. HK milk tea has enough tea taste and even my parents agree it's close enough to LA HK cafes. I feel like the food portion here is bigger than the Mira Mesa location. Food has some wok hei and all the items we ordered were delicious. Service is decent - minimal check ins after order is taken. I did notice for servers cleaning they are wearing disposable gloves. While serving food they are using the same disposable gloves. Not sure how to feel about food being handled while touching chemicals, used tissues, plates and etc.

I've always gone to the Mira Mesa location, so when I heard that Mom's Kitchen opened on Clairemont Mesa, I had to check it out. This new location is quite spacious, very clean, and thoughtfully designed with a cute, welcoming vibe. It feels comfortable whether you're dining in with family or just stopping by for a casual meal. Service was okay, not much interaction. My dad always orders the Hainan chicken and rice -- it's his absolute favorite and consistently hits the spot. As for me, I always go for the pork katsu curry. The curry is rich and flavorful, and the katsu is perfectly crispy on the outside while staying tender inside. It's the kind of dish that's both comforting and satisfying every time. Overall, the food here is packed with flavor and feels like a warm, comforting meal. I'm so glad they opened this location -- it's definitely going to be in regular rotation for us.

4.5 stars! I'm late into discovering this as they're not necessarily new and this is already their second location. But I'm so ecstatic to have found this Hong Kong-style restaurant because this is a cuisine I don't often find in the US. Ambience: I love how spacious and clean the restaurant is and the Hong Kong street signs were a cute little touch. Service: very friendly and assisting staff! What we got, ranked based on our favorite: 1. Black lava bun 2. Baked porkchop rice 3. Curry fish balls 4. Mango sago 5. Char siu 6. Pineapple fried rice Hong Kong style milk tea was also very good. Everything was delicious and authentic as it gets, however, I do think in terms of flavors, they could still intensify everything. As someone who has visited Hong Kong a number of times before, I just know that these flavors could still go deeper and probably they have kind of adapted to the local palate. But overall, we still enjoyed everything and the portions were very big. There are still other items on the menu that I am keen to try next time.

I was looking forward to trying this new Mom kitchen location having been to the Mira Mesa location. We came on a very busy Friday night with a large party of 6 and thankfully my wife had called to make a reservation so we didn't have to wait for our table. Our waiter was accommodating and friendly. We ordered: Beef Chow Fun, Roasted Half Duck, Congee, Garlic Green Beans, BBQ pork, and shrimp fried rice. The star of the night was without a doubt the roasted half duck which had perfectly crispy skin and juicy fatty meat. Our table devoured the dish. The interior is modern, bright, and clean with a primary green and white color base. The parking was very crowded as there are other popular restaurants in the plaza but we were fortunate to nab the last spot in the lot on a busy Friday night dinner at 6:30 pm.

Walking into the space, it's very bright, clean, and has some nods to Hong Kong with it's decor. We ate here right before heading out to Hong Kong so it was nice to get a taste of Cantonese food beforehand. The Cucumber Salad was decent and I thought the balance of flavors and spice was a bit off. There wasn't enough spice to counteract the more acidic vinegar taste. The Fried Noodles were solid but nothing out of the ordinary. The best dish and thing I was most excited for was the roast duck and bbq pork. I got the BBQ Rice Combo which comes as a single portion that has the meats+veggies which makes for a perfect balanced meal. These meats are what I came here for and both were really good. The duck was nice and juicy too. Some of the pork slices were better than others but overall the flavor was great.

We are so excited to see new Hong Kong restaurant! The restaurant is located in a very busy plaza with limited parking. We had to circle around for a few times on a Friday night to find parking. The restaurant is beautifully decorated! It's quite elegant! It's like a fine dinning version of Hong Kong restaurant, but offering a very authentic menu. The food options are much more limited compared to the traditional Chinese restaurant. We ordered the two meat combo, chicken and duck, and the sautéed morning glory. The duck was excellent! I was very impressed by it. The chicken was also very good. The morning glory was also very delicious, but overall, all the dishes here are quite salty. Their Hong Kong milk tea is great! We like this new restaurant! It's delicious and offering simple classic Hong Kong food and plates. We are likely to come back and try other dishes.

At first I thought this was the same menu as the Mira mesa location but it actually has a bit more options here (or it's been awhile since I went to the Mira mesa location...) I got the cheese pork chop rice and it was really good! It just takes 20 mins for them to make! The location has a lot more seating than the Mira mesa spot.

Went for Chinese New Year and the wait was long. When we finally got our food, we were disappointed with the quality. The combination bbq plate and shumai were decent but both noodles dishes were lacking flavor. We got the shrimp and XO sauce vermicelli dish and the combination pan fried noodles. There was too much bean sprout and the sauce was watery. My favorite part about noodles is the wok/charred flavor and this was absolutely missing in both dishes.

Beef Chow Fun

Mom Kitchen in San Diego is a classic Cantonese cafe. This spot was surprising actually. I didn't expect much out of it, so I was pleased by the quality of the food. It was a yummy Beef Chow Fun. However, for the price, I wish the portion size was a little larger. The service was friendly and quick. The inside was actually really well decorated and clean. Overall, Mom Kitchen is a very solid Cantonese cafe!

Haianese chicken + Duck plate

Walking by I saw an opening banner for Mom Kitchen: a Hong Kong / cha chaan teng style cafe restaurant in the neighborhood. The pictures of dishes were inviting and I returned with friends for some Asian comfort food, enticed by the xlb and cucumbers. Crispy Cucumber: 5/5 crunch and flavor, subtle tang from vinegar. delicious no notes Xiao long bao: 5/5 Yummy and freshly steamed with a delicate wrapping. Comes w ginger + red vinegar Mix Roast Platter (Haianese chicken + Crispy Roast Duck): 4/5. Our server explained you can choose two out of three options (there's BBQ also, but only 2/3 flavors total per plate). The duck (watch for bones) and boneless haianese chicken come with their separate sauces. The crispy duck skin is yummy like candy, and platter was enough for 6 of us. Fried thick egg noodles (beef sirloin): 5/5 Yummy, we all liked the noodles! The beef was good too, soft and tender. This was the favorite of the night. Combination Pan-Fried noodle (beef): 4.5/5 also popular according to the server and he was right, classic taste. This and the egg noodle were staples. Salt & Pepper Wings: 3/5 for flavor profile. The wings weren't peppery or salty unfortunately for us, and the batter on the wings was more similar in aroma to funnel cake. The chicken meat was otherwise nicely fried and still enjoyable. Overall, I'm very pleased with Mom Kitchen. It's a pretty, well-decorated cafe and our party of six had a great dinner. Staff were kind and the table always had water pitchers available. The menu is thoughtful, the cuisine is comforting, and I would recommend Mom Kitchen for the food menu and good ambiance again.

I visited Mom Kitchen on Clairemont Mesa Blvd for their grand opening. Place is very nice and shiny. Much larger than the Mira Mesa location. Sticky rice with Chinese sausage was sticky and I loved the savory flavor of the Chinese sausage and the mini dehydrated shrimp. A bit too much cilantro was that bold flavor hid the flavor of the rest of the sticky rice. Cola pork ribs featured tender ribs with very sweet syrup glazed on top. Very good but I prefer the sweet red sauce from traditional Chinese bbq ribs. Filtered water with ice was clean and refreshing. Staff was nice and efficient.

After some search on Yelp, we decided to try Eastern Dinasty on Convoy Street. Upon arrival, we knew the restaurant was legit when we saw shiny and beautifully roasted ducks dangling in a display box. Inside, it had a casual décor, with seating for 60 guests. The courteous waitress guided us to our table and brought the menu and water right away. For this visit, we ordered the following dishes: West Lake Minced Beef Soup: The portion was large enough for 6 people. The lightly starched broth was nicely seasoned with hint of white pepper. In the soup, there were bits of minced beef, chopped green onion, and stirred egg whites. The simplistic soup was warm, velvety, and pleasantly flavored. 3 Item BBQ Combo (House Special Chicken, Roasted Duck, and Pork Belly): The house special chicken was nicely steamed, lightly seasoned, and with beautiful gelatinous skin. The roasted duck pieces were plump, with crispy skin and succulent meat. The pork belly had crispy thick skin, and tender meat with nice rendered fat without being overly greasy. Walnut Shrimp: The portion was quite generous for the price. The lightly battered shrimps had a nice firm texture and were covered with mayonnaise and sprinkled with sweetened and crispy walnuts. What a beautiful blend of taste and aroma. Left the restaurant heart-warmed and extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.

It was empty coming in around 5:30pm on a Friday, but it soon filled to capacity in the next hour. So coming into it, we thought we would choose between Menu A and Menu B. Afterwards, we thought it was AYCE on the menu of your choice + the side buffet where there are limited selections of sides and refrigerated drinks. We ordered orange chicken, Chinese style fish and something else. Again, this was on the thought that we could order more than one item on our selected menu. So imagine our surprise when the bill was nearly $100 for two people? It was a misunderstanding. However, the initial staff gentlemen was completely rude about it and ignored us as we sought to understand. Finally, a second female server came and heard our concerns regarding the false advertisement and unclear messaging. She was able to provide us the price we thought this was for based on Menu selection. All in all - I don't recommend the AYCE option. I think it would be important to make a distinction that AYCE clearly on the menu and at the front - AYCE means each individual selects ONE entree (which is a one small portion) and the AYCE component of the deal is ONLY for the side buffet.

The spot itself is Retro Chinese-American aesthetic with a modern twist. Think red lighting, plants, and a playlist that keeps the energy up. It's one of those spots that feels trendy but still approachable--good for dates or catching up with friends. FOOD / DRINKS Mayo Walnut Shrimp (Recommend) This is one of their standout dishes--and for good reason. Crispy shrimp coated in that creamy, slightly sweet sauce with candied walnuts. It hits that crunchy + rich + sweet combo really well and is easily one of the safer bets on the menu. Green Beans (Recommend) Simple but solid. Good balance to the heavier shrimp--fresh, slightly savory/umami making it a nice side to round things out. Ginger Lemonade (Recommend) A refreshing sip with a nice bite of ginger. SERVICE Friendly and efficient, especially considering how busy it gets. Food comes out fairly quick once you're seated. TL;DR OVERALL 4 stars. Steady prices, good food, and good choices. Fun spot with strong vibes and solid Chinese-American comfort food. It leans more elevated takeout-style than traditional, but that's kind of the appeal. I've been to pretty good Chinese spots but this is a nice experience if you're looking for nice aesthetics and good food.
