My experience here was mixed. The menu was excellent, the flavors incredible, but the service was so/so. They were disorganized, were rushing our party, and overall not the friendliest. I cannot speak highly enough of this place. We are here 2/3 days we were there. The food is delicious and made fresh. I would recommend to go early as they do sell out of certain items through out the day. I will say I had a hard time with the menu as I'm used to Mexican and Central American food so please ask for suggestions and take their suggestions it will not disappoint. (PSA the hot sauce was actually hot and I like Chile de árbol so do with that what u will) Our server gave us great suggestions and was patient with us. Whoever is in that kitchen deserves all the credit (I bet she's Dominican, 'cause no boricua can cook like that) because the food is on another level. Unfortunately, the experience takes a hit because of the owners, who also serve as the hosts and servers. They always seem annoyed to have customers, with unwelcoming faces that make you feel more like an inconvenience than a guest. The man in particular often looks irritated by simple questions, and while the woman sometimes tries to be pleasant, it still feels forced. The space itself is very small with limited seating, so it already feels cramped -- but the cold attitude makes it worse. Terrific Puerto Rican cuisine in Calle Loíza. Menu is refreshed every day; being the holidays, I knew I had to get the pastele de masa. The dish itself was delicous, with root vegetable masa and pork in the banana leaf combining well and creating a wonderul aroma. Rice and beans are pretty standard, but tasty nonetheless. Also liked the plantain maduros and pork chop that came with my friend's plate. Pork might've been a bit dry. Service was busy but friendly. We visited during lunch, which put pressure on the two-person restaurant. Took a while to take our orders and to get them out. However, the owner was friendly and did her best to translate the Spanish menu for us. No credit cards accepted, though they now take Venmo. Based on the recommendation from our AirBnB host, my wife and I had dinner here during our recent vacation to the area. A true mom & pop restaurant in all the right ways, we were warmly greeted by both owners. While she walked us through the menu items of the day (there isn't a fixed set of offerings) he worked in the kitchen. Our food was delicious, our sangrias (made fresh at the bar and not out of a bottle) were wonderful, and I heart their red beans & rice. The owner chatted with us a little when she stopped by the table to check in. Despite it being nearly closing time, they made a to-go order for my kid back at the apartment without any objection. Two of us came in around noon for lunch. We were seated pretty quickly and ordered water to start. We were given bottled waters and charged $1.50 per. Would have been nice to know that beforehand, or at least given the option for tap, when we saw others around us with it. Beef stew: $14 The beef was cooked till it was very soft, and the dish had decent flavors in it. Definitely wasn't bad, but nothing too special. Mofongo stuffed with shrimp: $18 This was definitely the star dish. Usually, mofongo is just a ball of mashed fried plantains and can get pretty heavy. However, Molini's take on this dish was a bowl made out of mofongo, filled with lots of shrimp and a gumbo type sauce. Highly recommend this dish for its innovation and flavor. The price might steer you away from first glance, but the dish is well worth it. Based on food alone, solid 4.5 stars. However, there were other factors at play. We ended up staying in the restaurant for about 2 hours because the food took so long to come out. We noticed that people who arrived after us were getting their food before us. Perhaps it was because the dishes we ordered took over an hour to prepare, perhaps it was because our server forgot to put in our order, we'll never know. Also, when the food came, the server practically threw our plates down in front of us in a not so welcoming way. I don't expect top quality service from a family run restaurant, but a little politeness and decency goes a long way. Hopefully it's an isolated issue as I really liked Molini's. read more

My husband and I came here after we checked in to our hotel. We decided to give them a try based on the great reviews on yelp and they did not disappoint! Upon entering we met a man who had just ordered the chicken fricassee and highly recommended it so we ordered it as well. Food- 5/5 We had the Morongo stuffed with chicken and the chicken fricassee (stewed chicken) as mentioned. The stewed chicken came with white rice and beans on the side. Our meals came out fairly quickly and was piping hot. Both meals were very tasty. The portions were a good size and we both finished all our food. We also had two sangrias which were strong and good as well. Service- 5/5 Our server was friendly and helped us choose our meals. We also met man who I believed to be the owner who made our sangrias and gave us recommendations on other places to eat while in town. This is local spot that was about a 5 min walk from our hotel (tropica). This place had the best customer service we've had our whole visit to PR! Our server was very attentive and explained the "Spanish" items thoroughly without us even asking her. That was so nice of her and really appreciated it. The food was amazing. My boyfriend got cod with scrambled eggs, white rice and beans and plantains. I got fried pork and yellow rice. The food was absolutely delicious, the pork was extremely flavorful. Also, the scrambled eggs and cod and beans was delicious as well. The beans came with sweet potatoes in them as well. Definitely a must try if you're in the area! We also got some drinks (rum and coke and a vodka sprite) which was strong and delicious. The food did take some time (30-45 min) but it was very worth it! Our trip to PR definitely taught us to be patient, most meals take a while to cook and i believe it is because it is so flavorful! Also... I was pretty surprised by this place. The first thing you should know before going here is, for some odd and probably unnecessary reason, they don't have a credit card system, so they only take cash. And as petty as it is, it's actually one of the reasons I didn't enjoy this place as much, especially since they waited until we were done with our food to tell us they don't take card so my boyfriend had to walk to an ATM three blocks away and pay an ATM fee for cash. It's pretty nasty to carry cash, especially during a pandemic. I've gotten in the habit of not carrying my cards with me to reduce the risk of bringing more germs back home, so I like to pay with my phone. Also, I got the feeling that they didn't tell us until after we were done eating they don't accept card bc they were afraid we'd go to another restaurant, which they would've been right to assume. It's just irresponsible to not have a modern card system when you have a restaurant in a heavy tourist area. Anyway, enough of that. The food was pretty average. I've eaten puertorican food all my life, homemade and in restaurants and this one didn't really stand out to me. The menu they had the day I went didn't really seem appetizing, I was crazy about the selections. I got the carne guisado with arroz con habichuela, it looked really good but the flavor just wasn't there, it could've used more salt, more sofrito, more adobo, the meat could've been more tender and why did it have bones? I've never had carne guisado with non-stew meat. It was pretty disappointing. My boyfriend had the pastelon and pastelons are easy to make and to make delicious, so he enjoyed his except he did say it did taste like it had been waiting in an oven to be serve and pastelon is best served fresh imo. The service was good, our server was friendly. The restaurant wasn't packed at all at the time we went which was around 6pm. Haven't found a lot of places that have pastelon on their menu, this one came out just freshly made and piping hot like a meat pie or lasagna made with ground beef and layers of mashed sweet plantains topped with a little cheese(not too much where it is heavy). My husband had a grilled piece of beef and we both got a choice of sides of tostones and salad. Next time I might try the pasteles! Great homemade authentic Puerto Rican food where locals go. The second time we went we had the last pasteles like tamales except only around Xmas time and cooked in banana leaves. More similar to Trinidadian pastels. They also have mashed fried breadfruit!!!really only a place for locals and even the owners of the guest house where we stayed had dinner there. Pure, uncompromising flavors written in pure, uncompromising Spanish that don't even try to cater to dumbass tourists like me who can't speak a word of Espanol (sigh). This place was highly recommended by several locals and we finally made it here on our last day in San Juan. It's a small place but after only a few minutes they were able to accommodate our group of 6. The woman who initially greeted us was very friendly and attentive, but our server was the total opposite. From the start she seemed to be annoyed at life based on her interactions and complaints to the other server. She seemed very annoyed to be taking our orders or answering simple questions about the menu. I ordered the pastelon de platano with a salad. Don't judge me but I was obsessed with pastelon de platano this trip and ordered it at many different locations to compare the taste (yes, I'm crazy lol). The portions here are pretty big, and overall the food was good. However the server's bad attitude didn't make us feel welcomed or appreciated as customers. My friend's meal came with beans and she forgot to bring them out, when we asked she continued to talk to the other server for several minutes before finally bringing over the beans.
