A charming museum of contemporary art. We spent an entire morning walking through the galleries and saw some wonderful works. There are lovely grounds and outdoor sculptures as well. The museum has some sort of huge tubes outside and kids were zooming down the tubs having a fabulous time. We are a really delicious lunch in the museum cafe and I recommend it. I had a wonderful vegetarian lunch that was delicious and my husband had a salad with some really good smoked salmon. A lovely place to look at art and have lunch. read more

The Moderna Museet is Stockholm's museum for modern and contemporary art, located on the island of Skeppsholmen. The museum has an impressive permanent collection (pieces by Picasso, Dalí, Duchamp, Matisse, etc.). When we visited last week, I was really blown away by an exhibit made up of works from their permanent collection: "Pink Sails: Swedish Modernism in the Moderna Museet Collection." I wasn't familiar with too many Swedish artists, so it was a pleasure to explore this exhibit and experience art that was new to me! The museum is open late (until 8pm on Tuesdays and Fridays), which was great for us - it let us tag on a visit to the museum at the end of a full day of touristing around Gamla Stan. The museum is gorgeous, very modern, with a great gift shop, cafe, and restaurant. A really beautiful museum and well worth visiting if you're interested in modern and contemporary art. read more

I truly enjoyed visiting this museum. The only drawback was I think it was a bit pricy for what was offered. That said, I love how all the art was modern and random and at times quite raunchy. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to how the art was arranged and I dug that too. Plus there's an amazing exhibit in the lowest level (basement of the museum). Not to mention a sculpture garden out front that had some very interesting work. Definitely recommend. read more

The average Earthling can't grasp and hates modern art...but I love it! Forget the classical paintings. Forget the traditional sculptures. Forget everything you know and define as "art". Go in here with a clean slate, open up your mind. Is it interesting? Is it thought provoking? Is it confusing? Is it crazy AF? Creative? Eccentric? Bizarre? Weird? WTF? This place has it all...it can't be described in words, just look at the photos, and go. You probably won't spend much more than an hour in here, if not less. Best of all? Its FREEEEEEE!!!! Came here today mainly for the Yayoi Kusama In Infinity exhibition and was not disappointed. There were a bunch of interesting and very informative pieces, the installations were so eccentric! We paid a small price for this particular exhibition, but the rest of the museum is free which is great! The staff was also very helpful here, all in all a great experience here! read more

I'm not the biggest fan of their main exhibition, but the two times I've been to Moderna Museet myself, there's always been something REALLY cool at the temporary exhibitions. Way more than one really cool thing, even. In addition, the rooms are pretty and light (even when it's really grey and dark outside) and their museum shop is amazing. It's big, there's a great variation in sorts of art (paintings, installations, interactive art, photography) and I guess it's easy for everyone who's only a little bit into modern art, to like this museum. If you're able to go before mid January 2016: GO, as there's quite a big Olafur Eliasson-exhibition right now, and I guess it's really hard to not like his work. I was surprised by the variation in installations and the fact it has 19 (!) of his works, some even made especially for Moderna Museet. read more

The Museum of Modern Art is a must in Stockholm, above all for their permanent exhibition. This state-run museum is located on one of the islands in the city, in a building by the Spanish architect Moneo. Beside the exhibitions there is a museum shop, a couple of cafés and a restaurant. The latter has an amazing view for enjoying a lunch. Yes, many of the traveling exhibitions are superb, and where they that last few years have had some really amazing ones on display. The forte though is its permanent exhibition with some amazing works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Louise Bourgeois, Niki de Saint Phalle, Robert Rauschenberg (his goat with a tire around it's belly); not to forget Meret Oppenheim's "Ma gouvernante - My Nurse - Mein Kindermädchen". Many of these works stems from a bequest from the museum's first director Pontus Hultén. The permanent exhibition can be found both in the museum but also in the garden outside, where e.g. Niki de Saint Phalle has some amazing sculptures. read more

We visited this museum yesterday and liked it very much. The building's interior is bright & airy, and it's in a pleasant/peaceful area by the water. Admittedly the permanent collection isn't "stellar", but there were some interesting pieces - and right now they have a really good exhibit of Niki St. Phalle's work. The gift shop has a *terrific* and extensive selection of books. There's a small cafe where the two workers were very friendly, and also a restaurant (we didn't eat there). The man at the ticket counter was very friendly and helpful, plus he had a great sense of humor. Lastly, there are several huge/very colorful and whimsical Calder sculptures across the street from the museum's front entrance. read more

We LOVED this museum. It was quite possibly one of the highlights of our visit to Stockholm. We arrived bright and early 20 minutes before they opened to explore the grounds. The museum is so beautiful on the outside. By the time it opened there was a long ling of people awaiting to enter. The museum is free but if you want to see the exhibits you have to pay 150 krona for adults and 130 krona for students. I'd highly recommend checking out the exhibits. When we visited they had the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. We loved it! The museum also has a coffee bar when you enter and another coffee/wine bar towards the back. Another plus is that they have really good free wifi. read more

As Nordic visitors, we focused on the permanent exhibits and was engrossed all day-pretty sweet considering that entrance was free. They have an amazing collection of art from the late 19th and early 20th century paired with a cool app that provides in depth discussions on select pieces. The portfolio includes masters that come to mind to the general public (Picasso, Pollock, Warhol, Munch...) and reminds us of those that aren't household names. The progression of various movements in art history was nicely laid out as the exhibits were arranged in chronological order. Videos produced by contemporary artists can be found downstairs. The modern art museum is connected to the architectural museum. We learned a lot about Swedish design and how they think about housing. The attached cafe was great with a selection of artisanal beverages and beer as well as the usual (baked goods, sandwiches and salads). There is a restaurant, terrace and fantastic gift shop. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. A must for those stomping through Stockholm in the winter. Pro Tip: Bring your phones and headphones. Free wifi available to download the app. The wifi is spotty in the gallery so you should download the desired content in the hallway beforehand. read more

I went to see the Yoko Ono "Grapefruit" exhibit here. It was amazing but the other rooms drew me in just as strongly. Wall after wall had something that caught my attention (which, honestly, does NOT happen much in museums as much as I may act like it does). Going through the Grapefruit/Explosion exhibits made me feel almost every human emotion from pure elation, curiosity down to absolute disgust (if you go to see the exhibit or have gone through it, you'll know what piece I'm talking about) I found Picasso, Sturtevant, Hermann Nitsch and other more well-known artists here, as well. It absolutely exceeded my expectations from just the walk up (which has amazing views) to the outside art fixtures and all the way inside. Highly recommend coming here if you're in Stockholm, whether for just sightseeing or business. Worth every krona! read more

Awesome museum -- and the best part? It's FREE! That's right! The best things in life are free! You'll see the weirdest things in Moderna Museet, but afterall, it is a modern museum. They even have Warhol, Dali, and Picasso works on display. There's actually quite a lot to see here, so be sure to give yourself 2-3 hours. They have some really interesting /fascinating and interactive things on display. There's even one where you get locked up in a room for a whole minute before you can get out. Side note, do not bring a backpack here. They ask you to put it over one shoulder. read more

Stopped by this museum over the weekend to see what it was all about! Well I loved it. Extremely innovative exhibitions! Warm and welcoming desk staff and the entrance. If you're into creative art and want to learn about culture then this is the place to be in! One of the best museums I've been to! Understated intelligence even in the design and flow of the museum. Very rare modernist pieces, it was a joy to see in person. The newer exhibits were also extremely sensible and intriguing. We spent hours pondering different installations and pieces (even the bathroom is an exhibit!). read more

The museum is set in beautiful surroundings. The building is great. The design and signage and the general space is nice to explore. But the work is really skimpy. I've seen better examples of work by the artists on show, for sale in galleries in Cork Street, London. It's worth a visit and the restaurant was great. read more

This museum isn't that expensive and I guarantee you that you'll spend an amazing afternoon looking at everything. This museum is free, so it's worth a visit if you're traveling on the cheap. But as far as the art collection goes, I wasn't impressed. Interesting stuff but not a very large collection. read more

The price was outrageous for 4 rooms of junk. One room was entirely devoted to toilet paper. I like modern art but this was ridiculous. It may have been the exhibit but if other ones are like this, save your money. read more
