Exhibits on Vikings, Swedish history & a whole room of Viking treasures & plunder ( aka the Gold Room ) There are displays that detail out the Viking way of life from what they wore to their class system, how much silver each "class" was worth, how they fed themselves, traveled around in their boats & all kinds of great insight The Gold Room showcased all kinds of silver & gold in bars, nuggets and the detailed patterns on their jewelry goldwork is absolutely mind-blowing! How did they get those tiny, patterns carved into the gold, without any machinery! Well worth a visit!! read more

MUST DO! The theme for my Swedish vacation was "Vikings & Water"... my local host found the free museum day which was perfect for my budget! We spent quite a good time looking through the Viking exhibit. She had loaned me a Viking book to read during my stay which I did during my down time. With the reading and the visiting, we had a great week of discovery! We spent so much time just in the Viking exhibit this day, that we ran out of time to visit the rest of the museum. I was obsessed to come to Historiska Museet because I wanted to learn more about the vikings, and the history of Sweden. If you are not a student you will pay around 100 SEK to get in (at least up until Dec 2014, but I heard the museum will be free from January 2015 onwards). It doesn't look like it but the place is really big. You should start in the pre-history section and run towards the vikings. A lot of very interesting objects, the history is displayed in a interesting and unboring way. I must say the curatorship of the museum impressed me, they did a really good job in making a relationship between the old and the new. Obviously my favorite part was the vikings, you can see replicas from their ships, clothes. Understand their way of living and much more. I also really liked Medival Sweden (in the first floor). Only thing I missed was that some of the sections did not have a English translation, and although I understand a little bit of Swedish was not enough to catch up. If you want to buy a souvenir, come down to the store in front of reception. You can find interesting books and other things. Would definitely come back to see the sections I didn't have a lot of time to check out. read more

A great place to check out in the city. If you're looking to learn something new about Stockholm, this museum has anything you want to know. I visited during their interactive Holocaust exhibit and it was extremely powerful and wonderfully presented. Overall, had a fun time exploring this museum. read more

Admission is 100 SEK, but from September to May, the museum is free on Wednesdays after 4pm until closing at 8pm, and free all day on Friday. We went on a Friday, so did not have to pay. (Doing some quick research on the opening hours and admission prices of museums and attractions can save you quite a bit of money.) It wasn't a bad museum, but I did not find the museum particularly interesting (an entire room of gold coins, jewelry, and various knickknacks just doesn't hold my attention), and I was also a bit museumed out. Something to note: there are lockers for your belongings (and they are big enough to fit a good sized bag or backpack), and while we had to pay to use them (I think 10 SEK or something), you do get the money back when you unlock it. read more

Having only visited a part of the museum quickly and spending most of my time in the cafe I can only rate it on that. I loved the cafe, beautiful view into the courtyard and good variety of food Lovely place to go for to grab a coffee with a friend. My quick browse of one section of the museum was really impressive. Time for my partner and I visit some museum, since the weather wasn't so great. The Swedish History Museum was one of the museum which on my list and also one of the few museum with free admission in Stockholm. We took the bus to get to this place, but actually they also have metro and tram stations near. It is quite convenience to get around. the Museum open usually opens at 11, only between October to May during the week day opens at 12 am. One more thing, the museum which free for admission generally close on Monday, better watch out the timing, I found it out in the hard way. We were here just around the right timing, they really opened the museum quite on time, not one minute later or earlier. The staff was really friendly, after we walked in, they just told all us, if that we need to put away our bags, they would offered some coins for the locker. Which we did, I think that was really thoughtful. They also have audio guide. But only in Swedish So we started from the exhibition at the ground floor, which held the exhibition of Viking these days. It was quite interested to see and read all about it. The exhibition mainly contain some tools, weapons and accessories, even how they used to live. In the middle has some other small areas for different collection. The restaurant was just right next to the exit/other entrance. The upper floor has couple different exhibitions, they use the timeline to link every different theme together, from the medieval timing to the close present. Many interesting pieces as well. There is the small section, they called it the hidden histories, which the main them was the history of LGBTQ in Sweden. I like that and appreciated that, it's pretty open minded for a family kind of museum. In the middle of the building, there was a small free space some fun of medieval life experience, not much there, but enough to have some good time. Overall, I like the museme quite a lot, it was really great museum to visit. read more

Pretty cool and free! If you really want to learn a lot about history, you can spend a good amount of time here; otherwise it gets a tad boring, but still interesting to walk through. Go to the gold room and think about how dope it'd be to have all that!! read more

It is a free museum in central Stockholm. Hand held audio guides are available at cost (30 SEK, per device). Almost all of the the displayed items had an English description, which was great because not all of the display windows had English commentary available (which then made the audio guide useless). The museum had interesting relics and stories to tell. Not too many people visiting at the time of my visit, So this made viewing easy. The museum is a good "ice breaker" for learning about Swedish history. There is a small restaurant within the museum, as well as a gift shop that sells books, jewellery and postcards. The museum is a good way to spend an hour or so. read more

Free and easy to navigate to! This is a great museum to visit. They have interesting viking artifacts and engaging Swedish history exhibitions. I feel like I learned a lot while going through each different section of the building. There was free to use lockers to store our coats in by the washrooms as well. read more

I had no idea that hanging out with Vikings for an afternoon could be so much fun. We didn't even go through the entire museum, and we still managed to have a memorable time. Start in the basement and you'll be rewarded with piles of Viking plunder- gold and silver trinkets as far as the eye can see. I was amazed at the craftsmanship dating back many, many centuries. We also did the Viking room on the main floor, with more artifacts and descriptions of the fine people who lived in the area long before we were there. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Initially I wasnt planning on coming to this museum but so glad I did! The history surrounding the viking period is fascinating and an important part of swedish history. The Gold Room was my favorite section - it has an amazing display of silver, gold, and bronze treasures throughout that period along with their history. Excellent museum on Swedish history starting from the 1000s! Also has a cool Viking exhibit and treasure exhibit. I also enjoyed the Christian-influenced art, as it seems that Swedish artist are underrepresented in other art museums I've been to in other countries. Plus, there's free admission on Wednesdays after 4 pm. I liked the audio guide, but felt it was a little long in some areas. I didn't use it the whole time as I moved faster than the guide. read more

Don't expect to spend an hour or two here. We spent over 4 and didn't see it all. Wonderful excursion through swedish history including timelines, stories of individuals and towns and presenting the way of life during various eras. Includes some art and fashion, as well as weapons, household items... And a huge exhibit on jewelry and gold uses on the basement level. Interesting stuff! read more

For a free museum it wasn't terrible. Cool collections. However some of the exhibits were confusing. English translation was not Great and not accessible. Had to get little cards to walk around with in each room. Viking lawn games looked fun for kids but not at all adult friendly. For a little more the Nordic museum, a ten minute walk from here had a much better collection and free English audio guides. Also cafe had limited choices. read more

I have been here twice and each time I learn something new. This Museum talks about the history of Sweden and it's really organized and fascinating. Viking exhibition is well done, great artifacts, good layout even though I felt several areas lacked proper supporting information (for instance I would have liked a little more information on the runes, gods and mythology to support some of the displayed objects). I followed the 30 minutes guided visit in English which was useful. The first floor, dedicated to the history of Sweden is a little confusing and lacks context (some milestones of world history would have helped put what was happening in Sweden in perspective). WWI and WWII seemed to be non-existent. As for the treasure room, it is certainly an impressive display with massive silver and gold objects, but again with little context and cohesion. All in all, a very nice collection but the presentation did not quite do it justice. Random comment: the first floor is surprisingly full of tripping opportunities (uneven floor, confusing mirrors, etc.) - I know, such a comment might sound a little odd in a museum review but I kept on tripping during that visit and I have no mobility issue, so if you do you might want to be careful. read more
