Modala Beach Resort is a beautiful, quiet luxury resort that opened during the pandemic in a less tourist-heavy area of Panglao. The resort is pretty nice and the staff is customer-service oriented, but they could still do a few things that would make it truly exceptional.
The pictures online don't do this place justice, the views from the common areas are spectacular and the building is pretty interesting. The rooms are spacious and luxurious. The balconies have seating as well as a drying rack for your wet swimsuits. Upon arrival, you are treated to a refreshing welcome beverage when you check in and go to your room. Mint oil burns near the elevator, diffusing a pleasant, soothing aroma in the hallways.
The views aren't great if you don't get an oceanview room. We had a garden view and it was basically the driveway, garage and some local shanties.
Pool area is small but beautiful (infinity pool, covered pool, jacuzzi (had bubbles but not heated), swim up bar, lounge chairs in the water, sunken seats surrounded by koi ponds). The pool bar was open some days and not others which was a little confusing since their hours were advertised as open 10am to 8pm every day. A simple sign on the pool bar might've made all the difference.
There is a Recovery Spa where you can get a massage. I got a 60 min Swedish massage my first day and it was great. They give you some tasty ginger tea before and after your service.
There's only one restaurant in the building (Mangaon Ta which we learned means Let's Eat! in the local dialect Cebuano) but the hotel is connected to Moadto Strip which has a bunch of eateries. The entire top floor of Moadto strip is unoccupied but the bottom floor has some good options (The Buzzz, Giligans, Eno Mann, Ocean Blue). Breakfast at Mangaon Ta is included everyday which is a pretty nice perk.
The hotel program states room cleaning everyday unless you have the Do Not Disturb sign on. However, we were told by the staff at the end of the day after they DIDN'T clean our room that we had to request room cleaning if we wanted it. No one from the front desk had informed us of this. We understand staff shortages from the pandemic and it would've been fine--BUT it should at least be communicated to guests. Also, update the program flyers left in the room.
Gym also has a few areas of improvement. Looks nice (on the fourth floor, with glass windows overlooking the sunset deck) but I couldn't work the air conditioner, so it got super hot. There were an adequate number of machines (2 treadmills, 2 stationary bikes, no elliptical, weights, benches), but no water cooler or towels. There was hand sanitizer but no disinfectant for the equipment (had to pirate my own version of disinfecting wipes using the hand sanitizer and some tissues that were sitting on the counter). Yoga mats were kind of scary looking--like ripped, beat up germ factories. I'm not sure if the gym was meant just for decoration but it didn't feel too functional.
This place could be 5 stars--Hope they keep improving! read more
