Luca and Draga are the new owners of Moda. We popped in for a quick lunch for anniversary. Service 5 star. Food fabulous. Catered for our 10month old mushing up some food. Finished with some lemoncello.

Christmas Day lunch at Moda. Relaxed but attentive service. We chose entrees and mains from the a la carte menu, but also noted specials of the day. Andrew's grilled salmon was moist, with a delicately crisped skin and accompanied by steamed green beans and roasted vine grown tomatoes. Delicious. I chose the grilled Moreton Bay bugs with a champagne reduction. Sweet, delicate flesh perfectly complemented by the reduction. For dessert Tiramisu for me, polenta cake with poached fruit and a syrup. Coffees and a wicked Italian sherry. I'll be returning in February to mark my 65th birthday. Thumbs up to Moda for a delightful Christmas lunch

It originally started many years ago as a cigar and wine bar, but the non-smoking rules came in to challenge their popularity, but this quality has survived the change and prospered. They have a seriously good wine list, all carefully selected, a small but tasty food menu including tapas and pizza and live music on Saturday nights. The cocktails are top quality and all bar staff, as expected, really know their stuff. The ambiance is warm and inviting with a fireplace and Chesterfield lounges mixed in with some eclectic tables, chairs and stools. This place is simultaneously great for groups, small parties or even a date night. Go before 9pm on a Saturday night if you wish to secure a table as it gets really busy, or just prop yourself up at the bar and mozy on down to the dance floor and bust a few moves..

My cousin who lives in Melbourne, who was hosting me at the time, took me to this place as he said it was one of his favorite places just to listen to music and hang out. The lounge/bar has a very intimate feel to it, as it's quite dark inside. At the time we went, there was live music, and I am always open to hearing new genres. The place is a large lounge with ample seating for dining, hanging out, and of course just having some good drinks. Maybe this was just me but the drinks did seem to be on the steep side for a place not even in the CBD but more on the edge of it. I'm not sure if it's because I was still adjusting to the price shift or if this place was really pricey.

Then a paella to share which had a great mix of pipis, prawns, chicken and chorizo and great smokey flavours. Finally some churros with a creamy vanilla ice cream and chocolate. Spanish doughnuts were raw in the middle, so we asked for them to be cooked some more. A fresh batch arrived and they were also uncooked and slimy in the middle. In spite of this we gave this restaurant another go. This time they chose to accept a private function after I had booked a table for 5 people on a Friday night. Even worse, they didn't bother to contact me and let me know. My friend noticed "closed for private function on their website" one hour before we were due to arrive. I rang and asked to speak to the manager and was told he would return my call. Guess what? He still hasn't called.

The others are those chain store everything-but-nothing kind of places with cask wine, a lot of beer and premade shooters. Seddon Wine Store is to alcohol what a gallery is to art. Basically, it's small but thoughtful. They cover a range of price points, but they don't have mainstream over-advertised hangovers in a bottle. The owner, Simon, is often in the store and knows his stuff. He's always available for a chat and to dish some advice but isn't a vino snob. Most pleasantly of all, Seddon Wine Store now has an itty bitty wine bar located inside. Just a few tables, but goodness knows they have a great wine list to choose from, and some fabulous little things to munch on (think wagyu salami and nuts and whatnot). The biggest problem I can think of in fact, is that Seddon Wine Store is located directly between my house and the newsagent.
