Salty Sailors like three things, good beer, good food, and being close to the water at all times. The Mobile Yacht Club fulfills all three categories, and I might add, in a very unique way! Its situated off of Dauphin Island Parkway, and after the review you may want to check it out, just remember it is a private club for members and their guests. The décor is what you would expect dark woods and carpets, with they nautical dressings; the club also sports an awesome pier with views of the bay, a nice patio area, a pool deck and televisions in the bar area to keep up with the game while getting in some bayside food and beverage. That being said this club delivers, and in very different ways depending on the situation.
I have spent a couple of evenings here, once was in the fall, the other in December near Christmas. The fall occasion I will discuss briefly, it was after the Thurs night sailing regatta the club hosts and believe me they are intense about it. Not knowing my way around a boat completely, I opted to pull lines and have some brews while on the boat. Our boat one and we were served up some complimentary fried crab claws as a prize, they are phenomenal. The beer selection is pretty standard however, don't pass on the Goodwood, it unique and extremely refreshing for an amber beer. This night it was shorts and t-shirts or coverups and very come as you are considering we just got off the bay from a couple of hours under sail. I really enjoyed this night as the club showed its relaxed yet competitive side, those skippers and crews are all friends until the wind goes and the sails raise, then all bets are off. All in all a fun evening was had by all.
The Christmas evening was more dressy, though they seem to have a lax dress code, most people were in sports coats or blazers and slacks. We enjoyed the crab claws, don't miss them they are delightful. Cocktails were more the spirit of the day, bourbon from Evan to Woodford, beers, and a pretty decent cup of coffee. We were guests of a member and I must say kudos to them for the respect showed to both members and guests. They were charming and attentive, without being stuffy or overbearing. Did I mention the crab claws, ok if so for an entrée we both had the crab cakes; three large crab cakes that are LOADED with crab meat and are cooked extremely well. The homemade sauce and the salad bar made this a really filling meal. For dessert oreo cheesecake which was also delicious and a round or two of coffee. We got out for both meals, salad bars, coffee and cocktails for around 75.00! I think that's an awesome price for a great meal and drinks.
The only reason they don't get five stars in my book is that while the parking is extremely plentiful, the entrance was flooded and we had to look for the way in as my car doesn't do well in deep water. Otherwise highly recommend if you have the chance. Also the membership seems to be extremely reasonable if you own a boat or don't, either way if sailing is in your blood then check it out, you may just find a place to raise anchor and see MOB town from the water! read more
