I loved my experience at Mobile Records this weekend. I hadn't been record shopping in a while. I was looking for a particular Al Green record but once I got inside, I decided to see what other records I may like. This record store has an old school vibe with a huge selection. Come in with an open mind and some patience, and you never know what you'll find. The pricing was great for what I got. Once I left, I realized that I wanted the Prince record I originally put back. I called and asked if they would hold it for me. They held it for me until today (the next day) so I was able to come and pick it up. It's in perfect condition. A staggering amount of vinyl! The selection rangers from the standard fare, to some harder to come by titles. The prices are all incredibly fair! Even on the harder to find titles the prices were not on the high end. They appear to stick to the middle ground of Discogs when using that for pricing. But, the common prices seemed to be slapping a $5 - $10 tag on the records. I wasn't able to find any of my grail albums, but I did walk away with stuff. Super friendly staff, too. read more

Great selection of used and new vinyl, knowledgeable & friendly owner and staff, and organized just enough if you're looking for a particular album but also various piles to crate dig. I've lived in Mobile for two years now. Most of the things that I like here are approximations of things I love in other cities: the coffee, the food, the entertainment, etc. But Mobile Records is different. It is a gem in Mobile with its own character. When I eventually move, I will measure other record stores by how much I love Mobile Records. The employees are incredibly friendly and unpretentious. They have a great selection. They will order anything you want for you. They can talk to you about music all day, or they will let you browse if you're feeling introverted. There are rows of records organized by genre, new arrival, new and used. I'm a big fan of the punk section which is way better stocked than I would expect in south Alabama. They are a little messy but in a way that gives character. There are fun random boxes of records scattered throughout the store. If you are ever passing through Mobile, definitely stop by! read more

This is one of the best records stores I've been to in the US. I've never seen a store with such a high quality to quantity ratio. I realize that's subjective but I dig for Latin, Soul, Jazz, Soundtrack, Hip-Hop 12"s and they had all of it--the quality ratio is why I stayed there for 6 hours. Every bin I went through had me hooked to dig into the next since I kept finding amazing stuff. 90% of the stack I left with I've never seen before in my life--and I have thousands of records having shopped from Germany to Japan. I found a Stanley Cowell Strata East record here, for those of us digging Spiritual Jazz know finding any Strata East record in a brick and mortar store is pretty near impossible. I arrived here close to closing one night, just passing through town, but had to return the next day and spend the entire day here. Ask them about the back room. It's filled with hundreds of fifty-cent records that they bring out on sale twice a year for a back lot BBQ. Nick and Keith are assets to the community and have built a better one. Hanging out and talking with them is half the experience. They also have an in house electrician that repairs turntables for low rates and is passionate about what he does. read more

The used items are fairly priced, with many deals to be found if you're willing to dig. I just started collecting some old vinyl that I used to have as a kid. On my business travel now, I've stopped by a few record shops in the south and I was lucky enough to be in AL and found Mobile Records. By far, the best store to date. The selection is outstanding and the owner/staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They even have a listening station to preview your albums before you walk out the door. You won't be disappointed if you stop by as well. And expect to spend some time there. Before I knew it, I had been there 2 hours. read more

GF and I recently did a road trip from Atlanta to LA and back, and as usual I made a point to stop in local record stores along the way. Honestly, Mobile Records was the most impressive store that we stopped in at until we got to LA's Amoeba (Which is kind of not a fair comparison). Their inventory is ridiculous (and they claimed to have several warehouses full of stuff in addition to what was in the store). I found the Muppet Movie Record Store Day exclusive which I'd been looking for, as well as several jazz titles. The staff were quite friendly and had the usual music nerd banter going on, which is always fun to eavesdrop on. They seem very interested in feedback on how they're doing, and were actively working on reorganizing the store when we were there. The prices were fair, and they seemed willing to haggle on costs a bit. They have a limited amount of CDs, so this is really a place for vinyl collectors. Go, enjoy. This place is great. I wish I could have spent more time here. The selection ranges from 1920s country to Stax Records to hip hop to random 80s goth. This is what a record store used to be. Excuse me, what a good record store used to be. The people working were friendly, knew their stuff, and were more than willing to roll out the back stock or take you in the back room and put you next to the right pile to dig through. That was the most exciting part: plenty to dig through. For me, that's perfect. Plenty of the things I want aren't necessarily what everyone is going to buy, so I know that's when deals are really happening for me. I walked into the store today and was immediately yelled at from farther back in the store to put on a mask (which they did provide). I am fully vaccinated and chose to leave rather than stay. As I turned to leave (without saying anything about their policy or how I felt) the two men working in the store began to hurl insults and shouted "Go infect someone! Good luck killing someone!" I told them I was fully vaccinated and they yelled back, "So are we! So just go ahead and kill someone! Thanks for spreading the disease!" Not even Trader Joe's requires masks for the vaccinated anymore. No matter what you think about vaccination or wearing masks, this is no way for a business to treat a potential customer. I did not know what to expect as we pulled into Mobile for the first time and of course we had to look for a good music store. This place met and exceeded our exceptions, a record lovers paradise. We were greeted by the man working there and I regret I forgot name but I remember he used to live in our hometown of Portland. I found the selection here to be top notch, saw so many rare and hard to find titles and also got me a Beth Neilson Chapman album i have been seeking out for 20 years. Prices range from way under priced to appropriately priced. Anything I saw in the upper dollars I had to agree were worth what they were asking. Clerk claimed they did not have much of a country selection but I had to disagree, I found just as much variety and treasures as I had hoped. I can tell this place is owned and employs true music lovers. A fun place to shop and browse. Also worth driving hours out of the way for if you happen to be in a town nearby. If you live within driving distance of Mobile Records and collect vinyl YOU MUST GO THERE! Fantastic selection and even better prices. Found quite a few records that I hadn't seen in other shops. Staff is friendly and helpful, even staying a few minutes after the time they were supposed to close so I could shop longer. You will have a hard time finding a better record store than this. Amazed and Impressed! After shopping a couple of record stores without a lot of luck, I stopped by Mobile Records hoping to find one, maybe two albums in decent condition. What appeared to be a small unassuming record shop turned out to be nothing less than extraordinary collection of 1000s of records. This Is an excellent place to spend two or three hours (or more). If you love a wide variety of music, and appreciate Vinyl records you will enjoy Mobile Records. A large selection combined with personable and knowledgeable staff make this the best record store in Alabama. It may be one of the best in the Southeast. Whether it's something collectible or something common, your chances are pretty good of finding it here. It's well-organized. The near mint stuff is separate from the more well loved records.
