The Palestra has four courts-- for basketball or volleyball with a handful of batting cages and pickleball courts! You can conveniently rent courts online. We were in a tournament run by the Palestra this past weekend. I'm knocking a star off this review because there were a handful of things I'd have done differently in regards to the tournament planning. (Notably; we were at TWO locations for the tournament vs one, our games were super duper late and finally, we had to provide a parent to run the scoreboard.) The Palestra is a great addition to the area!!

I was forced to sit alone in an empty row of chairs this weekend because parents were holding chairs for the game after ours. Our poor kids didn't get a chance to see their parents sitting by the court because the game after was more important than ours apparently. We parents are all in this together!! Just ask the person in your seat to put your coat there when they are through. And for Pete's sake don't let your children practice dribbling between this mom and the game I'm trying to watch. I shouldn't have to ask your children to move!! My son's team did amazing and sadly went home with medals that weren't even intended for them. Some were baseball, not basketball, so yes I'm upset with the facility, but I'm more upset that parents can't work together to support our amazing kiddos.

We came on over after a coffee date with the kids and it's great spot to burn off some energy before bed! My exploration has been limited to the front play area with the delightful large frog. It's free to get in and the kids are able to run around and climb on stuff to make sleep come a little easier that evening! The other available activities include swimming, a track, ball courts and plenty of other rec center type stuff. We'll be frequenting anytime where in the area and need to run off a little energy.

You can purchase memberships that include the pool, too, but you can also just pay the daily pass if you use the pool sparingly. There is a diverse selection of weights and machines to choose from, as well as a well-kept track on the second level. I also really appreciate the placement of a number of mats throughout the space to allow for stretching and ground workouts. There are a few cubbies and coat racks available as you enter the second floor, which work perfectly for me to leave a few items. Locker rooms are also available on the first floor with locks for rent form the front desk (or just bring your own). The two gymnasiums are also clean and in good shape. Open gym times are posted at the front desk and online each week. You can also reserve the space rather simply. I've participated in Flag Football practice in the gym the past few weeks, and it was easy to navigate where to go.

I don't do tennis-- so the eight indoor and 12 outdoor tennis courts don't really do it for me. (They offer pickleball courts on Sunday evenings, though. Check it out!) The HTRC also boasts a fitness space (open 530-1030pm daily). There are treadmills, upright bicycles, recumbent bicycles, ellipticals, stair masters, free weights, legg press, chin/dip machine, balls, mats, bands, medicine balls and more. It's smaller than Iowa's downtown gym, the CRWC, with less machines/weights but it does the job! Why I say the HTRC is a godsend in the wintry grossness that is Iowa is that it boasts two indoor turf fields available for rental. The price is pretty steep but it is a hot commodity for youth teams in the area. My kiddos both are in competitive softball/baseball and their teams all get to practice during the offseason at the HTRC. The HTRC is also the home of the University of Iowa Women's Tennis, Women's Soccer, Women's Field Hockey, Softball, and Hawkeye Marching Band. Finally-- be warned that you need to pay metered parking. They do indeed enforce it and you will get ticketed. (Weekends are free, though.)
