This restaurant has 5 star ambience, 4 star food and 3 star service. The vibe is amazing ... very relaxing, interesting, cool. The food was pretty good. The service was friendly, but super slow. The table behind us complained that they had ordered 30 minutes and still not gotten their food. Our food was also slow. We wanted to order a salad which was not available until noon. It was 11:45 and they told us the kitchen didn't want to make it because it wasn't noon yet. By the time we got the food, it was 12:15 ... so I guess maybe they could have made it anyway since they took so long! Thought that we would try the restaurant out since it seems to be popular. Full of aspiration and high prices to match but a kitchen simply unable to deliver. Small poor value portions served lukewarm cooked by a kitchen with a limited understanding of classic recipes or possibly cooking. The kitchen is close by the dining area so the food must take a trip to the sea front to lose its heat. A small shared starter of prawns was bathed in a piquant sauce tasting predominantly of Heinz tomato soup. A steak cooked as requested but lukewarm and lacking proper seasoning while the bouillabaisse - oh dear, the French would kill over this. A small portion of thin but admittedly tasty lukewarm soup with a serving of a few probably local Fife prawns and mussels but no sign of any fish (absolute sacrilege) or vegetables. The croutons' were a large slice of slightly toasted bread slathered in rouille sitting on top of the soup. The sweet (sticky toffee pudding) was excellent, hot and tasty - presumably prepared by the highly-rated deli section rather than the restaurant. We could have eaten far better for less at several other places in town, which we will be doing in future as a return trip is extremely unlikely By the time we left, the entertainer was already repeating the songs that he had started with, not that anyone seemed to be listening or noticed. read more

Don't miss stopping here. We we're in town for a wedding and the reception was held here. I have never witnessed a staff so accommodating in my life. We practically took over the dinning room and actually danced between the tables. We had several diet restrictions for folks that they accommodated without issue. Our 3 course meal was excellent. Our first meal in St. Andrews! We quickly dropped our bags at our Airbnb and ran out the door to catch a late dinner before the restaurants closed. We were so happy to find Mitchell's! Their cocktails were delicious, appetizer plate of goodies was incredible (the raspberry vinegar and smoked butter for the bread - yes please), but my entree was just eh. AI ordered their burger and it was very well done, not juicy and all in all, just nothing special. My husband liked his fish and chips though! The service is really hit or miss - sometimes they are friendly and efficient, a lot of other times they are slow, unfriendly and never come around to your table. The food is nice and there is some good variation. The Wednesday steak night is good option, with a glass of house wine. The soups are good, however do not bother with their sandwiches (they used to be really good 6 years ago! Now the menu has completely changed). For great sandwiches go instead to either the Jigger for a club sandwich, or upstairs at The Road Hole Bar for the same club sandwich and a different view (also be sure to have the pear cider!). read more

Eh. I could just leave it at that, but I won't. I was in St Andrews for a conference, my colleague and I were staying overnight and needed somewhere fairly reasonable to go for dinner. Mitchell's certainly was reasonable and had a decent selection of different mains. The place is quite cool inside and I liked the décor, plus they had steak pie on the menu so I was pretty happy to begin with. Service was originally pretty good, but after we'd finished our meal and refused desserts/coffee, we were just left sitting there, basically ignored by staff members and ended up having to actually go up to the till to pay. If it was really busy then obviously I could forgive this, but it was pretty quiet! We both ordered steak pie and weren't massively impressed. The steak pie itself was ok (although more juices instead of gravy and verrrrry herby) and so were the veggies, but the mash tasted of nothing and was actually lumpy! They were actually serving steak pie as part of lunch the next day at the conference, and we both ended up going for that too, to try and make up for the night before! (It was delicious, highly recommend the steak pie at the Fairmont!) I had a few suspicions while I was there that it was probably G1, especially due to the fairly rubbish service (seems to be a common theme among G1 places) and the decor had a pretty familiar theme too. After a bit of Googling I confirmed this and was pretty gutted. Had I realised before we went in I probably would've suggested somewhere else! The wee deli at the front was pretty cute and I could be tempted back there if I'm ever in St Andrews again, but I don't think I'd pay the restaurant another visit. read more

I had the privilege of living in St Andrews for a few years. The restaurants and businesses seem to be constantly changing in town, often bringing in so-so food or goods at an extortionate price. But having moved back to Scotland last year I have had many friends tell me to check out Mitchell. I finally had the chance and was very pleased. My friend and I arrived just as they were opening for breakfast. I really enjoy the decor which as a bit rustic with the added touch of patched tweed upholstery on the seating by the window. The music that was playing at the time was a Motown compilation, which I'm always pleased to hear. The staff were friendly, but nothing extraordinary; whether this is because they were just opening, I'm not sure. In the shop when I asked about the tablet which was served with my tea, they pointed me to a prepackaged one before they told me that the one they served in the restaurant was only available to order in the restaurant. In fact, my short conversation with them (if you want to call it a conversation) left me feeling like a bit of an idiot for having to bother them with questions. Again, we'll just say they were tired and busy with the opening of the restaurant. I ordered the Eggs Royale. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite items on Scottish menus especially because it's often accompanied with Scottish salmon rather than Alaskan. (I really like the idea of local sourcing of food.) The Eggs Royale were brilliant with a rich hollandaise sauce. I enjoyed every bite and was wishing there was more... by that I mean that I could've eaten my weight in it... loved it. As a tea lover, the tea was ok, but didn't leave me with any lasting memory. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, but I would love a bit warmer of a welcome from the staff. Seriously, I already saw the pre-packaged tablet that they sell at other places that was right by the till. I'm not that unaware of my surroundings. We were looking for a quick and moderately priced lunch in St. Andrews and this is what we have found. Mitchell's is a deli, as the name suggests ;), so you can also do some shopping there if you fancy a bottle of craft brew or a jar of local jam. The food was quite tasty. I had the smoked salmon salad with new potatoes and it was very good. Unfortunately, I left here feeling ever so slightly disappointed. I came here based on a recommendation from a friend who's recommendations usually never go amiss, but this time, I'm not sure, I just wasn't feeling it. I don't know whether it was the phone call I had from my dad with some bad news before I ordered, or whether it was the low seat and the seriously cramped table (also be aware that you will be able to hear EVERY bit of the conversations going on around you - for example, I know the wedding venue plans of that Scottish couple, how the American lady next to me didn't understand the concept of a tattle scone and the old lady didn't appreciate the way her dog groomer treated her dog last Wednesday). We ordered the breakfast rolls with sausages and one of them was with an egg as well. The staff was friendly but inconsistent, the decor nice and pleasant but impersonal. Just like fellow Yelper Debs M. mentions - the staff does decide to ignore you and you have to go to the till should you really want to leave this place. I did enjoy the tea cosy that dressed the pot, and the hashbrowns that I ordered as a side were good. I know I ordered them after I had ordered my breakfast roll with sausages, but there was no reason to arrive so late. They were nice enough though. The coffee was tasty. What I was ultimately heartbroken about was the Matcha Latte I ordered to go. It was bland and disappointing, probably one of the worst I've ever had. Sorry. read more

I absolutely adore Mitchell's! The setting and the service were absolutely delightful. I came in for brunch close to 2pm and even though they closed the brunch menu at 2 my lovely waitress Millie still allowed me to have a bowl of granola and some eggs :) Definitely one of my favorite spots in St Andrews. read more

Arrived to St Andrews after a 6-hour train ride from London, feeling bedraggled and certainly feeling anything but inspired/energetic. Outside, it was grey and drizzly. But we walked into the warmth of Mitchell's and it was like being invited to the home of a good friend: live music, a central table for me and four of my best friends, plus a mouthwatering menu to boot. I was hankering for a hot meal after spending so many hours on a cold train, so the smoked haddock risotto hit the spot: hearty and piping hot, it went straight from the kitchen and into my belly. NOM. My vegetarian friend declared her main the "best vegetarian lentil shepherd's pie" she'd ever had - including the one she usually makes, which is a bold claim as she's a fantastic cook. The mussels looked delicious and the lamb looked downright drool-worthy. We were rushing to a wedding the next day, otherwise I would have loved to try the sandwiches from the deli. Staff were friendly and attentive. We had to wait a bit to get our bill at the end, but I like to think of this as more of a relaxed attitude (and not wanting to rush us) rather than neglect. The music was so enjoyable, we didn't mind the brief pause. My Scottish friend recommended this place and I gave it a try with companions at the end of my stay in St. Andrews, sadly, it was a mediocre meal. I had fish and chips with haggis balls while my other companion had steak pie. It's hard to decide just where to plant your caboose for a meal in St. Andrew's, where a plethora of fine dining and small, quirky-cute cafes exist to tempt you. That said, I'm pretty well pleased with my decision to take my chances at Mitchell's Deli on a Friday afternoon. Mitchell's is, first of all, pretty dern cute. The front entrance is what to me feels like an old-fashioned deli setup--wooden shelves crammed full of tins and cans, and a glass display full of standard deli fare. I didn't spend much time checking out the goods though, as my friend and I were famished after climbing the Rule Tower in St. Andrews' Cathedral! We very quickly were seated in the main dining room just next to a big window, where I got to perch on a bench seat fashioned of all sorts of different fabrics sewed together whimsically. I ended up ordering a lunch portion of veggie lasagna, and I was mightily impressed with the flavorful (and large) sampling that I received. It was seriously really dern good, and came with a wee bit of garlic bread and salad on the side. Couple that with a lovely coffee to go along with it, and I was a happy gal. The price is reasonable as well, and the staff was prompt, so that leaves me with my only grumble being with just how loud the music seemed to be pumping out. Maybe that's my old bones speaking: in my 80-years-at-heart mentality I found it a bit much, but bearable. :) If you're looking for a somewhat informal, atmospheric lunch or dinner in St. Andrews that doesn't break the bank, I'd definitely recommend giving Mitchell's a go. read more

A really disappointing experience which I will never forget. A party of 13 people . We ordered food and waited for an hour we could get the waitresses attention to ask if there was a problem. There was no problem apparently but some of the food arrived after 1 hour 20 mins and the last of it arrived after 1 hour 50 minutes. What should have been a lovely family get together was transformed into a "just get me out of here and go home and get a bowl of cereal. Food menu is extensive and impressive but they haven't got the experience or ability to carry it through . Way over priced for what you get and food is not that good. Only ok. Having read other reviews since I got home I can see that it's a regular occurrence. Somebody has invested alot of money into this business and premises but they haven't invested in what is very clearly inexperienced staff read more

Good atmosphere but solidly average food. My friend and I had afternoon tea for £20, which was a pretty good deal for the amount of food we got. However, the sandwiches were not especially filling or tasteful, the desserts were dry and overly sugary, and the scone was mediocre and served with whipped cream instead of clotted cream. On a recent visit from the US, we went looking for a breakfast restaurant. We were fortunate to stumble into Mitchell's Deli. Very hearty and excellently prepared and delicious breakfast meals. The best cappuccino in town. But what made the experience A+ was the service!! We felt very welcomed each time we went there during our stay. Dayna our hostess / waitress was amazing. I've eaten at mitchells several times and I found it average. so so food and spotty service. Recently at the Open I made a reservation for my group and paid a deposit. i called in advance and cancelled because my group was late coming together to allow the restaurant to rebook the table for another party because the crowds were large and tables were scarce. They immediately rebooked the table. I called back within 5 minutes to try to regain my table once my group reassembled yet they had already rebooked it and refused to give me back my deposit. Frankly with a culture, attitudes and customer service like this I'd strongly suggest you go elsewhere. There are so many finer choices in town. I've conferred with several others in town and several have had similar opinions. Your are better off elsewhere. read more
