Just a slip of the foot, and three ligaments in my left knee suddenly found themselves with nothing to do. An outstanding orthopedic surgeon put me back together, but it was the righteous people at Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy (Kerrville chapter) that got me walking again. Having had no prior need for physical therapy, I initially didn't know what to expect. I may have experienced flashbacks of boot camp before I introduced myself to the team at SM&PT, but they soon laid my fears to rest. Mike was all business when he greeted me and took my particulars on my first day, but he has a sense of humor and laid-back attitude that puts you at ease in short order. Jody is friendly and down-to-earth despite being the head of their operation. As we worked he happily listened to the old motorcycling stories I used to make up to impress people at parties. You'll find that Caitlin is about as serious about patient recovery as it gets, but to be honest she's hilarious and is so sweet to put up with my particular brand of humor for as long as she did. Cheyenne is like the little sister of the group, cheerful and always happy to help. Though she's relatively new to the clinic I never found a question about physical therapy that she couldn't answer. Still, the people most responsible for my recovery are Brandy and Shelby. Together they put me through a structured and dynamic recovery program, modified from the norm to accommodate my particular injury. Their professionalism was matched only by their patience as I worked my way up from hobbling around like a pirate to my coworkers saying they can't even tell anything had happened to me at all. Though thoroughly qualified, Brandy and Shelby lack any pretentiousness and made going to physical therapy seem like visiting friends or family. They readily demonstrated my exercises when needed and kept meticulous notes on my progress as the days went on. I found myself working that much harder just so we could all share the victory as the state of my knee continually improved. I still cringe and shake my head when I recall what happened to me that day in January. But I'm lucky that my doctor referred me to Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy. This was my 3rd try at various PT establishments in town. Why did I not begin with SM&PT??! Without hesitation, it was the best I've ever attended. A small area, 4 PT/DPT therapists, an acute friendly atmosphere, and to-the-minute, on-time sessions. At the end of my 3 months, Mike printed out exercises I could do in the pool to continue strengthening the muscles that support my spine. It only allows 5* yet 10* would be more likely! To Mike, thank you for being patient/supportive, and to Sydney, Caitlin, TJ, and Mike, I wish you continued success because you certainly render comfort, laughs, grammar, and geography tips to all of us, all the while we perform as you instruct us and voilà, the hour is completed and my back finds relief! ehhhhhhh. I would *definitely* not call this place trauma informed, let alone trauma focused or…read morespecific. I have gone into social work myself since, and had a lot of education on trauma care, and I can tell you this place isn't that. Not that I think you need an advanced degree to know. I've waited quite a while to write this review to make sure I wasn't just harboring something. I did have positive experiences with some people there, mostly a couple of techs that I still regard very highly and the opportunity to connect with other women was great. The clinical work here... so so bad, though. Basically, I watched every client with severe trauma symptoms here be re-traumatized pretty heavily. I was shamed in group settings in ways that I could tell perpetuated harm not just for me, but for other clients with similar experiences. I know a lot of clients I was with relapsed very soon after. I definitely put some of that down to the added shame that was piled on in this environment at a clinical level--woof. (To be fair, from what I have heard seems to be pretty much everywhere in substance treatment in Texas). As a survivor of narcissistic abuse several times over, which was all part of the trauma stories they have you share, I was then repeatedly accused of being a narcissist in group session by a particular therapist. My thinking is that most of this was because I did not act super compliant about the problematic stuff here--and meanwhile had a lot of very positive relationships with other clients. For myself, I was outright told my PTSD wasn't PTSD by my direct therapist. This has been my central diagnosis every other place I have had care. My genuine belief is that because they were so ill-equipped to address it, misdiagnosing me with god knows what was an attempt sidestep their incompetence amongst themselves. I haven't been back to treatment, I will give them that. But I put that down more to my insistence on following my own path that I knew honored my experience and sheer will to never have to be in a state where I could be treated this way again.
