I have never been tested nor have I ever had allergies other than penicillin my entire lifetime (50+ yrs). When I stated that I wasn't going to sign it, the assistant said that it is standard procedure before testing that this form gets on. I said it is untrue, so I'm not going to sign it until we see whether or not I have allergies. Then, the assistant told me that she must have given me the wrong form after persistently insisting that I needed to sign the paper. I went outside, called my representative from the Ada, and he suggested that I go back in and ask for the paper that they were supposed to give me. When I told them that my representative told me to ask the receptionist and the medical assistant both laughed at me and told me that this is not something that I need to bring up publicly. I decided that that was when I was going to report them to the Washington board of Health.

When i finally got around to following up on a doctor's advice from a few years ago to get myself…read morechecked for an allergy to bee stings, i ended up seeing Dr. Montanaro at OHSU's Allergy and Immunology Clinic. Dr. Montanaro is an Attending, so the first person i talked to was a Resident working for him. Much like the role a nurse often fills, i talked to her about why i was there, my medical history, and such. She took notes, went to discuss it with Dr. Montanaro, and a few minutes later they both came in. Dr. Montanaro and i talked for a few minutes to make sure he understood the scope of my prior allergic reaction, then he explained why he thought it would save everyone some time, money, and discomfort to skip actual allergy testing. He made it very clear that if i wanted to do the blood test, they'd be perfectly willing, but he was confident that i'm at very low risk for anaphylaxis (severe, life-threatening allergic reaction) and probably shouldn't worry about it. He gave me advice on how to avoid future exposure, how to treat myself if i do get stung, and encouraged me to take a prescription for an epi-pen just in case things got out of hand (multiple stings, etc). After that, he even took a few minutes to discuss my two minor food allergies. He talked about how people with one allergy are at higher risk for the other, so it's not coincidence that i have both, and so on. Really, i learned a staggering amount in my 30 minute appointment _and_ didn't have to get stabbed or scratched, so i'm pretty happy with it all. Dr. Montanaro is friendly, helpful, and willing to take the time to make sure you understand as much as you want to.

From my first experiences with his office (on the phone with Naomi at the front desk), it was clear that the culture at his practice is to go above and beyond for their patients. I was in a bit of an anxiety-fueled state by the time of my first appointment, and had prepared a long list of questions. Over many minutes, Dr Hodgson patiently and thoughtfully answered each question, providing his reasoning each step of the way. He even went so far as to walk me through the many layers of my MRI images (which his medical assistant Daria had miraculously obtained electronically from a provider across town just minutes before). In discussing treatment options, he readily cited research and his personal experiences treating other patients with my condition, all the while relating this information back to the questions and concerns I'd already expressed. It was exactly what I needed to hear, and how I needed to hear it. On follow-up visits, I've been further impressed by his retention of small details from our earlier discussions (especially considering the large number of patients he treats). I've read that being a good doctor requires not just an understanding of science, but also the interpersonal skills to apply it. In my experience, Dr Hodgson is an exceptional practitioner of both.
