Campsite at mississinewa lake
David A.

This was our first trip to mississinewa for a family camping trip. Our first impression was the campground was huge and really well covered with modern restrooms and nice flat camp sites good for tents and campers alike. The beach is within walking distance to the campground and is connected bike bike/hiking trail. The beach front is easily 200 yards long with a huge meadow area full of picnic tables. There is a nice bathhouse for changing into you swimming attire and a snack bar that is furnished more like a full camp store. The trails are well maintained and vary in length and difficulty. One point of interest that will impact future trips is the presence of a very well maintained and expansive disc golf course. I didn't know this was here before this trip, but I'll be better prepared next time. The only downside to this experience was that we were only able to stay one night. We will definitely be back!

Extra candy if solving the riddle

I have stayed during autumn weekend in the past and had always forgotten to take some pictures, so this time I got some to share. This weekend during Autumn Weekend 1, was a sheer delight. I came with my youngest son for some bonding time and had a good time. For those who have never one of these two weekends each year, you have to make reservations early because the place completely booked months in advance. I was lucky enough to get a spot after a cancellation. Some people go all out in decorating their site and many more bring their children or grandchildren for the trick or treating on Saturday afternoon. This is the place to be for your early Halloween fix, young in age or heart. Lots of fun. Also I gave a extra candy prize for solving the riddle: I am best used broken and most famous green, what am I?

My parents are camping junkies and they have me hooked too. This state park is just unbelievable (you'd never know you were in Indiana). We first drove over a huge dam holding a 3,210 acre lake (it's really a reservoir) that spans the whole 14,386 acre park. The camp sites are grassy with just enough shade from the gorgeous fall trees, have level gravel, and are all near bathrooms. The bathrooms were so clean I could smell the bleach, there were no bugs, and the shower water was hot! I would have given all 5 stars, but the signs to find the campground were sparse and we got lost a few times. Here's a taste of what you can do here aside from the fun of camping around a fire: - swim (there's a beach) - all boating sports (except tube kiting) - plenty of fishing - miles of beautiful hiking trails (moderate and rugged) - hunting... boo :( - playgrounds for kids - volleyball - frisbee (disk) golf - radio-control airplane flying field

We will definitely be coming again! We camped here for 6 days at the end of May. We stayed at site 120, which is full hook up (50 amp electric, water, sewer). There was plenty of room for our 38ft camper and huge truck. There are 2 picnic tables per site. Since we had full hook up, we didn't use the bathhouse much, but from what we saw, it was decent. Mississinewa state park is definitely undergoing some changes. They received money to make some upgrades, so there was construction in some areas with new bathrooms going in and updates to the beach area. Unfortunately, the beach was under water when we went, so we weren't able to swim. The camp store is just down the road from the camp sites. We rode our bikes there and enjoyed the hand dipped ice cream. They also had several different food choices. It was by far once of the most diverse camp stores I've seen (as far as food/snack choices). The camp sites are a little close for my liking, but we weren't ever really bothered by anyone else. It wasn't overly crowded, but we stayed during the week. There are several nice playgrounds, hiking trails, disk golf...it's on the smaller side, but we enjoyed it. The Mississinewa dam is a short drive. We fished at the dam and drove around to some of the nearby nature sites. Tip: if you want the full hookup sites, plan ahead! They fill up quick! Another Tip: cell reception...there really isn't any!! My husband has sprint and didn't have service the entire time. I have AT&T and had some cell service, but not much. They do have free WiFi, but depending on how busy they are, weather, where you are in the campground, their WiFi can be hot and miss too.

My boyfriend, dog, and I stayed at France Park for two nights and had a great time. We rented the…read morecabin (there's only one on site) and wanted to make a review since it's hard to find info on it. The cabin is tucked away and was difficult to find due to the staff not giving us a map or directions but we found it just after driving the whole park and deciding to go back for directions. The cabin is primitive and you have to bring your own bed clothes, pillows, etc. no running water, electric, or heating/cooling but there is an electrical outlet a little ways from the cabin. You'd need an extension cord to reach the cabin though. Picnic table and fire ring on site. They didn't give us any hassle with bringing our dog which we declared when making the reservation. The cabin is very shaded and I was not worried about my dog over heating. There's also a store on site with basic supplies and you can also buy firewood on site. There were vault toilets right by the cabin but they were intolerable...strong odor, wet floors, you get it...so we would head up to the bath house for the rest rooms. Little bit of a walk so we'd drive up. Those were clean and the showers were free. France Park had a lot of fun things to do including various fishing areas (one being just down the hill from the cabin), a swimming/beach area with an obstacle course on the water, and the coolest disc golf course I've ever seen (we brought our own discs. I didn't check to see if you could rent or buy on site). The course goes through the woods and was very challenging for a beginner like myself but loved the experience. The location is also fairly close to a tubing place called Riverside Rentals and we really enjoyed that river float. Also not too bad of a drive to town if needing supplies. I wish we would have taken more photos but was too consumed in being present and enjoying disconnecting. Overall, the only negative was the vault toilets but we'll definitely be back to enjoy this location. What a gem!

Chain O' Lakes - Chain O'Lakes State Park

Chain O' Lakes

I've been making an effort to experience my home state of Indiana a little more these days. From…read morestate parks to roadside attractions to smalltown diners, I've been trying to simply slow down and enjoy Indiana. Chain O' Lakes State Park is one of Indiana's state parks. Located in Albion, a small city of under 2,400 in northeast Indiana's Noble County (think Kendallville), Chain O' Lakes State Park has as its main feature, you guessed it, a chain of lakes. The park has a chain of nine "kettle" lakes (13 lakes total, 9 connected). Kettle lakes are glacial lakes that were formed out of melting ice blocks. Chain O' Lakes offers small boating, 23 miles of forested trails for hiking, a hillside family cabin, a Nature Center, campground, swimming beach, picnic shelters, and the historic Stanley Schoolhouse - a historic one-room schoolhouse. Chain O' Lakes has 426 campsites, 18 cabins, waterfalls, great fishing spots, and you can rent watercraft. This is far enough from Indy that I kind of recommend making it a weekend trip rather than a day trip. There's much to do in Noble County (which also has a decent-sized Amish community). You can canoe a great five-mile path through the park's nine connected lakes (This used to be an official "challenge," though I don't know if it is anymore). There are even canoe camping sites (more isolated than the traditional camping sites). Chain O' Lakes is one of Indiana's under-appreciated gems. It's definitely less accessible than some of the parks, though it has improved somewhat over the years. It's more rustic and natural. It emphasizes outdoor experiences and its just over 2,700 acres feel like you could just get lost in them. The park is only 19 miles northwest of Fort Wayne (Indiana's second largest city), however, it feels like a world away. As someone who typically goes to Fort Ben State Park, I have a major love for these parks where you get there and forget there's a world outside the gates. If you're not the camping type, I'd probably head to Kendallville rather than Albion for the overnight. However, Chain O' Lakes has everything from primitive to more comfortable camping. So, it's easy to find something that works. I hadn't been to Chain O' Lakes in a while. Returning, I was reminded just how much I enjoy the place and how relaxing it is. A few other basics - This is a state park, so there's a fee to enter unless you've gotten the State Park pass (which I recommend for Indiana's 24 state parks). Also, fishing requires the state license and it is enforced. Finally, a couple semi-fun facts. There's a "re-entry center" located directly in the state park with a capacity of 140 incarcerated individuals. It offers educational and treatment programs designed to help people transition into the community - it also helps maintain this park, Pokagon, and the surrounding communities. It's been here since 1967 (and yes, it is safe.). Chain O' Lakes State Park also hosts The HUFF 50k Trail Run/Relay, the 12th largest ultramarathon in North America. Doesn't all this make you want to visit? I'll admit that I tend to stick in the 4-5 star range for most state parks. I love them. In terms of accessibility, I'd go 4-star for Chain O' Lakes. Because it offers so much and is really under-appreciated (in my opinion), I'm bumping it up to 5-stars. The trails, occasionally accessible, really do require someone with mobility issues to have assistance and some simply wouldn't work. Word of caution, as well, with so much water you had best plan for mosquitoes. They can be really serious around here!

Great camping spot! It's always quiet and beautiful. The boat rental closes at 4 ( I couldn't find…read morethe hours) and we didn't know that and got there at 4:05 :( only downside. The trails are good and the Dairy Queen in town is always a nice backup if the hot dogs aren't enough for your hunger

There is ample parking once you get in though. The park has a little lake that you can swim in (if a lifeguard is precent). Around the beach/lake is a walking path, that does get a bit narrow in some parts. It is paved and well maintained. There is also covered pavilions around the park there are 4 decent sized ones with grills. One even has a patio that overlooks the beach/lake.In addition to the large and medium sized pavilions, there are a few personal sized ones scattered about the park. At the front of the park is an adequate baseball field. It is well groomed and ready to play on. Next to the ball field is a full basketball court. It is nice and has a smooth new looking deck. The rims are in good repair and have adjustable heights. I would love to shoot a few airballs here. In the back of the park is a dog park that is basically a fenced in area with a bench placed in there for you to sit and watch your pooch frolic. Behind the entrances to the lake is a sand volleyball court that needs a little TLC. The net was down while I was there, but did not look like it would take much to get the court back up and running. The park has two playground areas. The bigger of the playground areas is next to the baseball field. It has some pretty updated and newer equipment including, see-saws, merry go rounds, rock climbing walls, swings, rocking animals, a saucer swing and slide. The ground is covered in wood chips and has rubber mats in high traffic areas such as under the swings. The playground is very impressive. The other playground is by the lake entrance and is ok, but not as nice as the one on the other side. It has a set of the older style swings and a small jungle gym with a slide. Both play areas are accessible though, which is cool. I really like this park and was surprised that this is the first review. You can spend an entire day here and not even know it. There is a lot to do and it is a very relaxing place. It is well maintained and has a friendly staff. definetley a must visit.

You are not allowed past thigh deep in the water unless you pay an extra $10 an hour to do the obstacle course. Also, parking is not clearly marked. Small kids did seem to have a good time, so it might be worthwhile for families with little ones. Since Fishers residents get in free, it might also be a good dunning spot for you. They do allow outside food and coolers, if you want to pack a lunch, and offer coolers with drinks for sale at an inflated price. If you do decide to go, make sure to fill out the waver online ahead of time.

I asked if there was a place where they do sell drinks and snacks and I was told they do over by the Porta Potty but I really didn't see anywhere that these items were being sold Maybe there was someone back in the kayak shed they had those things available but I would just recommend you bring your own. They only have porta potty available which I personally not a fan of. The Sandy Beach area where I was laying had so many bees and wasps. I happen to have some bug spray in my bag so sprayed myself and the area where I was laying at and my towels in an effort to keep them away. Worked for short amount of time. The sand is very hard and uncomfortable. Bring chairs. It's $7 per person to get in if you're not a fisher's resident if your Fisher's resident it's free and probably more affordable if you have the group of kids because it is $10 extra for an hour of the kayak use and $10 extra to go beyond the roped area probably because they have this inflated play area that's tethered outside that roped area. They have a lifeguard on duty. Fill out the waiver before you go. If you have the money and bring your own food and drinks it could be a nice little outing for the family. If your not a resident of fishers though I'm sure there are more enjoyable options for $7, $10 or $27 per person. Also be prepared to bring cartloads to be able to enjoy or be comfortable.
