After putting a couple skin cancer biopsies off for a while (which, nobody should ever, ever do!!!!) I finally had the pleasure of my primary referring me to Dr heller (there is a Misha M. Heller, M.D and Alan W. Heller, M.D . It is a father and daughter team) Not only do they have amazing credentials!!But, they also have amazing bedside manner. I had the pleasure of seeing Dr misha since I felt more comfortable with a woman checking my body for places / moles that didn't look right and etc. (the one most at risk was on my ankle though) When I first made the call, we all know how long it's taking to get into places. I only had to wait about 3 weeks for an appointment? And most of that was my fault since I had an already scheduled surgery for something unrelated. Even when I called to make the appointment the woman answered the phone immediately, was helpful with answering all my questions and etc. she was such a delight! Unlike some places that act like you are bothering them by asking questions. It's in the same building as the quest labs I always frequent (over in the parking lot of the old community hospital by the traffic circle) It does have free private parking. But it does only have about 5 up close spots. And I think 3 - 4 of those are handicap. For the other parking you have to park in the little parking garage which still is not a very far walk (and free) When I first walked in I was immediately greeted by the women behind the desk. The place was all decked out in Christmas decorations, it was so cute. And yes, I showed up in my pajamas and explained how I just had surgery. So the woman helped me with signing in and asked if I needed a bottle of water or anything. Which I think it's safe to say everyone went above and beyond (They also had bowls of candy, which were all out, but they had a huge bowl of samples such as moisturizer and SPF) They also offer cosmetic dermatology such as filler and all the way up to liposuction and other plastic surgery. Which I can't comment on since this is just strictly for the biopsy I believe the nurse who helped me the most name was jasmine? (I know it started with a J) . Jasmine and Dr misha did an amazing job at calming me down. They even brought me blankets, an ice pack to put on my head and neck and kept trying to distract me. The level of care was 1000000000000 Thank you so much for a great experience. To those who are going through something as scary as needing a skin cancer biopsy, I hope you see this and see Dr misha. Given that my biological father died of melanoma and I have many pre-cancerous growths all over my body, I have worked with several dermatologists over the years. Dr. Misha Heller is without question the most incompetent dermatologist I have ever encountered. During the two years that I worked with her, including over ten visits to her office, she increasingly reinforced her incompetence. I will address her numerous failings according to their materiality, rather than chronologically. I. Missed Melanoma I had a very large growth on my forearm. It was the largest growth on my body. I repeatedly pointed it out to Dr. Heller and expressed my concern about it. Dr. Heller repeatedly told me that it was insignificant and she did not biopsy it (even though she biopsied countless other growths - nine different growths during one visit). In order to have another set of eyes view my numerous pre-cancerous growths, I consulted a second dermatologist. The second dermatologist immediately focused on the large growth on my forearm and took a biopsy. It was not a basal cell, nor a squamous cell. Rather, it was a full blown melanoma. Notwithstanding my repeated identification of the growth, Dr. Heller completely failed to identify the melanoma. She didn't even biopsy it. II. Missed Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Cancers I had two separate and noteworthy growths on the top of my head. I repeatedly pointed them out to Dr. Heller and expressed my concern. Dr. Heller repeatedly told me that the growths were insignificant and she did not biopsy them. I pointed out the same two growths to my new dermatologist and he immediately commented that they are likely cancerous. The biopsy revealed that one of the growths is a basal cell and the other is a squamous cell, and they had merged. Notwithstanding my repeated identification of the growths, Dr. Heller completely failed to identify the cancer. She didn't even biopsy it. III. Enormous Biopsy Sites and Scars Dr. Heller repeatedly removed enormous amounts of skin when taking biopsies. She created these huge wounds and, notwithstanding my diligent treatment of the biopsy sites, the large wounds often took several months to heal. Moreover, when they finally healed, I was left with giant scars. I currently have many enormous scars on my body from where Dr. Heller took biopsies. When I asked her about this, she claimed that it was necessary for her to remove and biopsy the entire growth, rather than merely shaving off a small portion for the biopsy. My new dermatologist disagrees with Dr. Heller's approach. He says it is unnecessary to remove the entire growth for a biopsy. He only removes a small and thin layer for biopsies. As such, the small wound sites heal quickly and do not leave large scars. IV. Elf Ear Dr. Heller identified a basal/squamous cell growth on my ear and performed a Mohs procedure. The result was an unmitigated disaster. She created an enormous peak at the top of my ear. I look like an elf. Fortunately, my current dermatologist is taking steps to reduce the peak and make me look less elfish. V. Biopsy Fees I have wonderful PPO insurance with a major carrier that covers every physician I have ever consulted. Dr. Heller uses a particular pathologist for her biopsies that does not accept many insurances, including mine and certain of her other patients. She did not tell me this upfront. Rather, she allowed her pathologist to bill me directly. When I asked whether Dr. Heller would consider using one of the countless pathologists covered by my insurance, she adamantly refused. She told me that she has arranged for preferred billing rates for her patients whose insurance is not accepted by the pathologist but, if I wanted to continue with her, I had to personally pay her pathologist without the benefit of my insurance - literally thousands of dollars per year given the number of biopsies I have. In all the years that I have been consulting dermatologists and getting well over 100 biopsies, I have never had to pay a pathologist directly because my dermatologist refused to use a pathologist covered by my insurance. VI. Dr. Misha Heller is Reliant on Her Soon-To-Be-Retired Father Dr. Misha Heller joined a practice established by her father Dr. Alan Heller. She told me that she is a "Daddy's Girl" and her father takes care of her. Dr. Misha Heller often relied on her father to assist with my treatment. She called him into my examine room multiple times for assistance and asked him questions about my treatment. There is a big problem with Dr. Misha Heller's reliance on her father. Dr. Alan Heller told me that he is retiring very soon. What is Dr. Misha Heller - the self-proclaimed "Daddy's Girl" - going to do when daddy is no longer there to bail her out? Fortunately, I will not be there to find out. Dr. Heller is very nice and personable. However, she is an incompetent medical practitioner. Caveat emptor. read more

Beware: This doctor will not see you unless you sign an arbitration agreement, but the office staff does not disclose that upfront. I scheduled my whole family for a yearly check up and filled out a substantial form questionnaire online before coming in. When I arrived with my kids, the front office staff person told me to review and sign an arbitration agreement. When I said I won't agree to arbitration and conveyed I didn't want to sign it, she said then we couldn't be seen. This was after I waited many weeks for the appointment, took time to fill out extensive paperwork, and hauled my kids there after school to get this exam done. In that situation, I know some people would have reluctantly signed it because the thought of starting over after doing all that is frustrating, but I will not be coerced into making bad decisions. As an attorney, I know that forced arbitration is not a joke - it has serious repercussions for the consumer who falls victim to malpractice. Contracts should be entered into freely. If a professional demands that you sign an arbitration agreement as a condition precedent to receiving services, that's a red flag and you should run. We did, and I'm so glad I did after reading another yelper's review claiming incompetence. read more

What a scam! I went in with a mole that had grown and had never experienced this before and was concerned of skin cancer. I was met with "what do you want me to do about it"; really terrible bedside manner. But I simply asked for whatever is normal in these situations. The mole was cut off and I thought that was that. I've now received 4 different bills; 2 from the doctor and 2 from the pathologist. All this despite this supposed to be covered by my insurance and paying my copay at the office. Out of pocket almost $350 for something that was supposed to just be a copay and I have no belief that these ridiculous incremental bills will stop coming. From my first consultation, making appointments, follow up, etc everyone was friendly, thorough and guided me through the process. The office is spotless, modern and uses state-of-the-art lasers. Dr. Heller provided me personalized, professional care and explained all my options thoroughly to help me select the best treatment for my aging skin. I was very impressed with how skilled she is using lasers. Of course anyone is a little nervous getting a cosmetic service but I have to say all my anxiety was laid to rest because I was treated with such care and respect by everyone in the office. Called for new patient appointment - told that it would be 23 days wait for Dr Alan Heller and over a month for Dr Misha Heller. I asked how to you handle situations that are more urgent. Was told: - We have a waiting list but if we call you and you don't answer, we pass you up? Makes sense for same/next day appointments but for a few days out?? Doubt I'd ever be so lucky to be waiting by the phone when they call. - was told some dermatologist retired during the pandemic and less to go around = ok makes sense... Then I was told "BECAUSE" of covid they don't schedule as many patients? WHAT? 3 years out and you haven't figure out how to handle covid in your office? NO!!! = Scheduling less patients isn't a solution since any one of your patients or staff can carry covid (or you could carry it to them). How about better ventilation, wear proper fitting N95 mask or any number of things that protect all of us. read more

I drive an hour to come to Misha and Alan. Years ago, I was pedaling through local dermatologists to find a right fit. My dad recommended Alan for a skin irritation that stumped several doctors. Alan was able to address the issue, treat it, and it was gone the next day. He also removed skin cancer from above my eyebrow, and his son stitched me up. This family is hard-working and diligent. Searched high and low for a new Dermatologist in Long Beach. First off I was seen 1 hour and 15 minutes AFTER my scheduled appt time. I don't care what type of physician you are (or how booked/popular you are), the office staff should call the patients if their doctor is running more than 30 minutes behind. Those of us who have to make appts on our lunch breaks...this is so unacceptable. I was about to leave since my appt was not an "emergency" but I stuck it out since I figured I had already waited soooo long. She was clearly in a rush once she finally came to my exam room, barely listening to my skin concerns. After seeking help with some lesions I've had on my face for years, I was told by Dr. Heller that they were merely milia, pores that have become filled with keratin. She sis an "extraction" of them. However, after the treatment they have remained the same and have never healed. I also verified with my Kaiser dermatologist that they are NOT milia. When I complained to her office staff about my dissatisfaction with Dr. Heller's treatment, they told me I had to transfer all my Kaiser medical records to them, which is not an easy task. I'm going to seek a laser specialist for a different opinion, which is what I should have done in the first place. A poor diagnosis on Dr. Heller's part. read more

I have to share my experience with Dr. Misha Heller. My 17 yr old dealt with severe acne for years - being a soccer player didn't help. Dr. Heller met with my teen and laid out a plan in very simple terms and was very supportive and encouraging. Results happened just as she had indicated. UPDATE: she prescribed me with 2 medications she thought would help me and they gave me a very painful rash. When I did some research on these meds I realized that they are not meant for people with dry skin which is one of the issues I was trying to explain to her. I gave the office a call to explain my frustrations and was passed along to her office manager who was apologetic, but was asking me to come back which I politely declined. Misha Heller then called me the next day offering to write me a check to cover the cost of the visit and medications if I signed a legal document that basically says I will not bad-mouth her on the internet - which is bribery. As if that wasn't enough, she got her dad on the phone to try to help "mend" the situation. I want to thank Mischa for saving my skin. I am acne prone as it is (have struggled with it since I was a teenager) and having to wear a mask at work for more than 12 hours at a time left me with big painful breakouts (I knew I need help when my breakouts started to hurt) They were all over my chin, cheeks and jaw. Basically where the mask hit my face broke out even more. She set me up on a skin regimen including topicals and oral medications. This place is a JOKE. First of all they are terrible at responding back to phone calls/getting back to you. I was told I had something, that checked out by another Doctor, turned out to not be true. I was charged not only for their service (that did NOTHING) but also an outside Dr. for a biopsy (which also turned out did nothing to help my situation). I had to call back 3 times throughout the day in order to remind THEM to send my prescription over to the pharmacy. By the time I got there and it still was not there I just gave up. Now I am going to a general surgeon to take care of my issue (after spending about $600 out of pocket to this place for nothing). The Dr. barely gave any information and rushed me out the door.
