I was very impressed by he helpful staff upon exit when I asked if the shopping trolley could be taken to car park. Answer is no. However, they send a staff member down to the car with you. These little touches & the staff attitude is what would bring me back here. Unlike some other owners of Chinese shops that are just plain rude that I don't even shop there anymore.

Pre-packed, wafer-thin beef and pork rolls to drop into your instant ramen noodles, millions of soy and oyster sauces, billions of chilli oils, gummis, Poki, bamboo shoots, it's happy hour at the freaking flavour factory and you've got the golden ticket. Of course, at least half of this place is things that I don't recognise and will probably never try (read: weird, so weird) but I try one new thing every time I come here. Doesn't always pay off, but 1 in 3 times it does. Like the chilli oil with cured pork chunks that's now my new favourite condiment, holler. Just don't buy the garlic that's imported from China - it's bleached, and the girl at Cornersmith Picklery told me it goes bright blue when pickled, naaaasty.

And somehow an unpretentious and homely cafe pouring lavazza coffee with white fluffy raisin bread and other comfort food is stuck on the front of this tiny emporium, evidently with a big sister cafe in Artarmon. And I unexpectedly had to have coffee and raisin bread and found about fifty bucks worth of spices and stuff I desperately needed. Well worth a visit. So not hipster.

To get my fix initially, I bartered with the in laws (NZ natives) via the post - I'll post you Tuimato sauce if you post us Masterfoods Worcestershire steak sauce, they said. This was an expensive exercise, as bottles of sauce are not the lightest thing to post. One day, driving down the Princes highway no more than 5 minutes away from my house, I see a shop emblazoned with New Zealand Snack Food. I check out their website and see that they have the sauce. So I stop by one day and pick some up, without paying for postage! At $4.50 per bottle all the way from NZ it's a bargain. While my heart lies with the sauce, there are lots of other NZ goodies you can get from these guys, and they will post it out in bulk too to save you some dollars. Anyone for a Pineapple Lump?
