Of the many eateries my husband I tried during a two-week trip to England, The Cheese Society stands out as one of the best. Tucked at the bottom of Steep Hill in Lincoln, it's part cheese shop, part cafe, fully lovely. I had no trouble finding a seat at a communal-sized table in the middle of the store on a weekday for lunch. The cheese-monger working behind the counter came by several times while I was enjoying my meal to ask if he could "ply me with cheese" - the answer was always, without thought, "yes!". He was so kind and incredibly knowledgeable about cheese. The menu is fairly small and - you guessed it - completely centered around cheese and all its glory. I had a cheddar & herb scone which I won't stop dreaming of any time soon, which was served with a slice of Godminster cheddar and butter on the side. I have since had Godminster flown across the ocean to my front door. Being a cheese glutton, I also ordered the Lincolnshire Rarebit, their spin on Welsh rarebit. It was also utter perfection. I washed it all down with a refreshing bottle of a crisp, dry local hard cider. Take me back!

IIIIIII love this place…read more It's no secret that I ruddy love cheese, and this place has a shop and restaurant. Can you really base an entire menu on cheese? I hear you ask. Well, in one word, yes. It is quite likely, that you will have to wait, but these guys are aware of their popularity, and they have comfy seats where you can wait, and have a glass of wine if you fancy. Varied menu, with gluten free options, though the gluten free bread was a but disappointingly cake-y. I've been here three? times now, and I've never been disappointed, though with that much cheese, do be fully prepared for a food coma, and maybe gout if you get addicted and come here everyday. The shop is also great, we've had many a floor picnic which we have supplied from here, as it's far more polite to collapse with a food baby in private!

Claims to specialise in (ludicrously overpriced) locally sourced ingredients. In practice this means pork and cheese. Chef likes baking so there are cakes everywhere - including lining the bar so you can't see the pumps!. Bar even has a settee placed directly in front of it - never seen anything like it. No menu written on a blackboard over the kitchen viewing hatch, instead you are treated to a humourless, sexist comment, childishly written on the blackboard but compensated by the sight of the chef knocking back the booze whilst he works! The food and service are the worst (at this price) I've ever experienced. Fillet steak at £22 ("is it from Lincolnshire?" "no but the butcher we use has a shop in Lincoln"), with a tasty cheesy mushroom, a handful of mixed salad leaves and some chips which the waitress proudly announced as being"just like MacDonalds!" I kid you not. (Lincolnshire's most prolific and famous local food is its potatoes). Very slow service, constantly and rudely interrupted during our meal by a waitress (the owner?) yacking on about themselves and completely unaware of customer experience. Haven't got a clue where this place is going or what it is trying to be. There's a small stall which sells local cheese, meat (most of which you can get in local supermatkets) but this does not a deli make.

It's not made here, it's par-baked and frozen, shipped to this shop, where they bake it and sell it as needed. Sort of like that Frenchy fancy shop around the corner from the Church. I guess fancy cheese needs fancy bread. The white one was pretty good. Excellent crunch, crusty exterior, uniform though chewy and pliable holes. I also bought cheese here on 2 occasions. The first time, I didn't get to eat any of it since Papa Smurf ate it all while I was out. It was some really lovely looking gorgonzola dolce, blue, runny, delicious. But, the lad helping me cut a slice from the wheel, then let the delicious center portion FALL OUT. Obviously, these people are NOT french. Oh, and Papa Smurf cuts the nose off the cheese. Always. Cuts the nose off the frakking cheese. The second time I bought cheese here, there were 3 types. Again, some gorgonzola dolce, and a bigger portion! I asked the shopgirl to scoop up the runny tasty lovely middle portion. Maybe the English don't like the middle runny portion? Maybe they can't taste the difference? Could I have asked to have 250 grams, JUST FROM THE CENTER? Cheese was very good. The shop is quite famous in England because of television attention and celebrity chefs. They don't carry Lincolnshire Poacher unless it's actually made in Lincolnshire. Such staunch Geographic Protection of Origin. Single tear. Sigh.

I will start off by saying the interior is very neat and rustic-quire cozy. All the service was quite friendly and prompt! A major highlight of our visit was absolutely the soup they were offering at the time: roasted parsnip. I have never had a soup like that. What a humble parsnip must dream of becoming... to be cooked into this exalted state of being! Seasoned to perfection and served with homemade bread and salted butter, it was so divine that my mouth is watering just thinking about it as I write. Truly a marvel. All the pies were skillfully crafted and gorgeous. Beautiful pastry and well seasoned fillings, accompanied with your choice of mash. I particularly liked the cheese and leek as well as the wholegrain mustard mash. I tried a vegetarian pie with goat cheese our first night, then a more classic chicken pie the next. Both were magnificent and the portions absolutely giant! They also have both the traditional hot-water crust pies in addition to puff pastry, so it's a nice variety. As we visited around Christmastime, my party and I also benefited from the delicious mulled wine and holiday puddings, which all hit the spot. This is somewhere which, if you visit Lincoln, you absolutely must not miss!
