They could at least put the current temperature for the Minneapols St Paul International Airport on the bottom of the screen with the Time\Date\Sunrise\Sunset Information. There appears to be space there for this. What is with the bright blue screen? It is common knowlege that blue light is bad for your eyes and can lead to emotional agitation in some people. This new format creeps me out. The BBC news headlines that are selected for broadcast indicates that they are targeting a very small local audience, rather than the larger MSP region. There doesn't appear to be any connection between TPT Now and the regional weather alerts that come out of Chaska MN. Dear Lavender, As a…read morereader of your magazine for 10 years, I thought it well past due to write you in the spirit of constructive criticism. It is tempting to assess you as a "lifestyle" magazine. By this measure, you do several things quite well. Your reviews of restaurants, theater/classical music/opera performances are readable and engaging, and your calendar of events are crucial to gay-friendly businesses and organizations throughout the Twin Cities. The sophistication of your packaging (with its glossy pages and covers) makes similar queer publications in San Francisco or New York appear amateurish by comparison. But even as we hold Lavender to the "lifestyle" genre, I call for a major face lift of your publication. To many of your readers, the folks you seem to be targeting are gay + white + middle class + Christian. With few exceptions, lesbians, the trans- and bi- communities, and people of color find few images or articles that appeal to their diverse tastes, interests, and beliefs. Lavender demonstrates its loyalty to a small segment of the LGBT population in several ways. For example, your pages are front-loaded with ads for new condo developments and related services, such as realtors, home and garden supplies, and window treatments. Note: mass home foreclosures and the current credit crunch are not just figments of the heterosexual imagination. Until recently you featured a column titled "Faith in Action", which intended to highlight spirituality in the LGBT community. Unfortunately, its writer (from your targeted demographic) seemed to view the project as his own budget psychotherapy service, allowing him to air his rants against the Christian church and share his personal journeys through religion. Fortunately you exorcised his column before his conversion to the Kabbala or Scientology. Please be assured that I am not suggesting you revamp yourself into a journal of queer theory. Most of us are incapable of reading three pages of Foucault without developing a brain tumor. Nor do I recommend that you expunge those adverts for escort services, which feature shirtless models and their vacant faces. In this struggling economy those pretty boys are cat-fighting for jobs, too. But I am encouraging you to consider the possibilities of your role in the community. Why not include more stories about issues affecting the broader LGBT community? Why not strengthen your work with queer movements that have raised awareness about our issues, and continue to work for equality? Until then, I will continue to pick up each new issue of Lavender at my local coffee shop, gay bar, or restaurant. After all, despite the tone of this letter, I'll still look forward to your previews of the Guthrie season, and reviews of the newest gay owned business in town. And, of course, I want to know when's the next Miss Gay U-S-of-A pageant at the '90s.

You are the classy neighbor, giving me just enough information about things I don't normally care about, just in case I'm ever in a situation where I need to sound cultured. You are the friendly neighbor because your articles always sound so nice. You have never taken on a negative tone with me, kind of like my real-life asshole neighbors. I don't even need to mention how reliable you are! And, most importantly, you are my nosy neighbor. Your crime reports are reason enough for me to live! I love knowing that I'm not the stupid person who let some strangers in, got tanked, passed out and then woke up to find her car missing. I'm sure glad I get to read about someone else doing it, kind of like my own personal gossip magazine. I just wish you'd put the paper in bags before you delivered them. I know it's not great for the environment, but throwing a newspaper onto steps covered in snow/rain is pretty dumb.

They are informative and educational. (I miss Nichole M.) Some may not be up my alley (the divorce lawyer show) but most are (nutritional, doggy behavior) It's nice to run errands and everytime you get back in the car someone new is on and giving you more info to live by. Overall I love FM 107.1. I also hope Jason M stays, his show is on at a perfect time to catch during lunch break and I seem to always turn it on when everyone gets to call and say what "drives them crazy"! The one show that I don't care for, but I keep trying, is I and M in the morning. I get incredibly frustrated when the show becomes all about Ian and his point of view. Which is always "right". He uses the disconnect button to maintain that status. Don't get me wrong, I think they are well educated people with very good values, but NPR gets my attention during those hours.

Now, I'm not way lefty; I'm more lefty-centric...and becoming more centric with age, but I truly like this publication. It consistently offers intelligent, thoughtful and interesting articles. The best part about reading the Utne is that I always feel like it was a good, positive use of my time.
