I don't think much about 24-hour convenience stores anymore. We just assume that there'll be one in every corner when we need them. But once in a while you find things in them that make you realize that they really are pretty awesome to have around. Like --
QUAKE BARS!
If you've ever had a childhood in the sleepy neighborhoods of Metro Manila, this might be what it tastes like. Chocolate cake bars have come out in various shapes, sizes, colors, and fillings, but inevitably they all taste somewhat the same--and that's a good thing.
Chocolate on the outside. Chocolate on the inside. Whoever in the world came up with that combination deserves some kind of honorary Nobel prize for worldly delights. These Quake Bars (the red wrapper with the little football player, in case you were wondering), in particular, have a very nice density to them at first bite, and a welcome richness to the chocolate - sauce? fondant? palaman? - they possess within.
I remember these used to be more boat-shaped (or that very well could have been another brand), but this new, flatter form factor is actually quite decent. All-in-all a great choice for a quick, sweet snack. If you're in the mood for one near any supermarket or bigger sari-sari-store, pick one up. They're good as ever!
AND SHIM RAMYUN BLACK RAMEN!
A wave of authentic ramen joints are popping up all over the Metro, and people are flocking to them with good reason--ramen is good. Very good. But when the bill hits me as I deal with a tummy full of deliciousness, I often wonder, how much should very good ramen actually be worth?
I wonder this because in the aisles of most every convenient 711 location in the city, you can find a vessel for some of the best ramen anywhere--for under 90 pesos. I'm talking about Shim Ramyun Black, a rich instant ramen with a deep beefiness and a heat that will curl your socks if you let it.
Don't let the fact that it is "instant" throw you off--this thing is legit. The flavor, the intensity, the quality of the noodles, all top-notch. One taste of this will leave you scratching your head: "I used to pay HOW MUCH for ramen?"
When you see Shim Ramyun Black, pick it up. You won't regret it! read more
