I grew up on the periphery of New York's Yorkville neighborhood, a neighborhood known as a center of German / Austrian / Hungarian culture in NYC. Spice shops, bakeries and cafes that served the typical cakes of central Europe, restaurants that served German and central European food.
Regrettably, Yorkville's central European character is virtually all gone now.
So imagine my surprise when I found the Mini Euromart in Lake Placid, of all places, carrying many of the sweets and meats and fish and delicacies and smoked sausages that one used to find in the markets and restaurants of Yorkville. Its cases and shelves carry a terrific selection of European foods, including homemade smoked sausages that they bring in, apparently, from Brooklyn; wonderful jams; marzipan; European chocolates; white anchovies; and even caviar, blinis, etc.
I love this place. Great find in Lake Placid for those whose tastes tend towards central Europe, or who want to put out a really good charcuterie (certainly one that would be far better than could be achieved through the local supermarket).
More 4.5 stars than 4 stars, really. Recommended. read more
