Wow! Starting with a rant here --- but if you boast and brag any bit about your charitable contributions, it cheapens what the kindness in your heart intended, it cheapens you. Conversly, if you happen to find yourself on the the opposite side of the spectrum, you are special and there is a very nice place for you above when your time comes -- with hope, many moons from now -- for us all. I was raised to be charitable with my time and money, "serving your fellow man is important" they would say.. -- Rant complete. The Italian Charities of America's mission: A human services organization providing services, activities and programs for the benefit of the community. A friend of mine told me she rents a table for the flea market and has been asking me to stop by. For a $25.00 fee, they peddle their wares -- forty to fifty tables full of new and used unique goods, lit by a stunningly beautiful chandelier adorned by four smaller satellite illuminators. The second floor room is beautiful! Classic Italian stately design, form meets function, with thick framed paintings of our pioneering people past, adorning the marble walls with golden sconce highlights. Handbags, leathers, costume jewelry clothing and household items may appeal more to the female persuasion, guys, y'all gotta go check it out anyway -- with your ladies, your buddies or alone, if your single and in the market, you might meet a nice Italian girl. Speaking of which, I met one of the finest woman at the great of the room fronting the Christopher Columbus painting. Marie is the Italian Charities publicist and with her Ad Hoc team, coordinate and promote monthly events from dances to dinners, unfortunately the Easter Italian Dinner was sold out because I had a fist full of greenbacks in hand ready to plunk it down for tickets to attend. It's quite common for Italian people to talk about where their family is from back in the old country. She and her family are Barese, my family being Genoa -- we kick butt in ship building and stuffed ravioli. Thankfully Marie and her committee are hard at work creating new events, so check the website for details -- I know I'll be in attendance for their next Pasta Dinner Evening, maybe I'll see you there.

Pre-COVID: A friend of mine was showcasing her photography here during a flea market so I decided…read moreto stop in and keep her company for a bit. The building has crystal chandeliers, Italian tchotchkes in glass cases, some articles and other bits of history. There's an elevator to the upstairs banquet hall if you can't use the small staircase, and this was where the flea market was. It mainly seemed to be people selling things they no longer wanted, costume jewelry, books, glassware, clothes - one lady did manage to find a stunning fur coat. They apparently hold Saturday night dances, I saw a flyer for one advertising Latin & Italian oldies, classics, and Top 40 from 8pm-12am with food, coffee, tea, dessert, and alcohol. I would love to see the crowd that comes out for that! This is a community center, so you can rent space or give money to various fundraisers they hold, all in all it's a great local resource.

Where do I even begin???…read more My son needed to qualify to take the Hunter test and I was looking for approved testing locations when I landed at this magical test taking center! The owner could not have been more supportive, brilliant and knowledgeable about the entire process. I was delighted to visit on testing day to see a bright and warm school environment that was carefully prepared and planned to help every single student succeed. I am so inspired by this place that encourages students to work hard and reach for their dreams! Sky's the limit! Everyone there is so kind and so helpful. They're just happy to be there. I met many former graduates and enjoyed learning about this exceptional place of learning. The care and attention to every detail in this school is phenomenal and I would trust Frances with anything. She is a brilliant woman who is kind and caring beyond what I ever imagined possible. Thank you so much! We came just to take a test but left inspired. Look at these healthy snacks they give their students to recharge! I'm telling you, this is a place that has been engineered to the highest level of success in all the right ways, with the best of intentions. They've also given back to their community in so many ways, helping so many young people to achieve their dreams. Kudos to this place!

We are Back at @kwellerprep!…read more My son had a great experience preparing for various exams at @kwellerprep Kweller, and here we are again, in the 7th grade, choosing Kweller to prepare my child for the SHSAT. Choosing test prep at Kweller has been one of the best decisions we made along his academic journey. Thanks to @kwellerprep, my son's essay writing, reading comprehension, math and vocabulary knowledge have improved measurably. Before Kweller, my son would use basic vocabulary to convey his thoughts, often in run-on sentences. Now, he can compose a compelling coherent essay with an interesting introductory "hook" incorporating the rich set of advanced vocabulary he picked up through Kweller courses. This transformation has clearly shown in his ELA and math grades this year! Covid took many things away from us, not the least of which is a valuable in-person learning experience in the classroom. We could make up for lost time with enrichment classes at Kweller. I'm happy to recommend this excellent, rigorous academic program. $100 Discount code: Tristate100

My wife and I enrolled our oldest daughter at the age of 7 in order to supplement her education and giver her additional grade-level skills. At first, we were skeptical of the Kumon system since it required our daughter to start with rudimentary/basic lessons that we believed she knew. I struggled with watching my daughter have to repeat lessons that she already learned. We stuck with it and noticed a change in our daughters math abilities after 4 months. It was a small change but she was making connections about math that she struggled with before. My wife and I also had her enrolled in English. My daughter liked reading so this seemed unnecessary but we figured why not giver her the opportunity to challenge herself. This extra activity gave her the opportunity to practice understanding how different ideas are expressed in language and begin to read critically about what the protagnists or the event in the story. The system so far has delivered and a key component has been Eva at Kumon-Forest Hills. She is sensitive to childrens different capacities, provides encouraging and positive words and has a great staff of co-instructors that are kind and helpful to the students. I often see the co-instructors smiling and providing 1on1 support to the students. My oldest daughter started Kumon at 7 years old and has been doing it for 2 years+. My younger daughter is 5 years old and has been doing it for 1 year. I asked them why do they like Kumon, here is a list of what they told me; - Eva is a really good teacher - We like Rebecca, she is really nice - The tutors give me hints at how to figure out a problem, then I can figure it out on my own in a few seconds - I like all the books that you can take home I plan to enroll my girls in Kumon once we move this Summer. I want them to learn the habit of taking on a bit of extra work today that will help them tomorrow. I figure that if they do this for the next 10 years, by the time they reach high school and college, they will have the will power and self-motivation to succeed on their own.
