So this morning, my friends and I had our post-nightshift brekky here at Pakington Pantry. Been…read morehere a few times before for I love how timely their service is and that they serve lunch menus even at breakfast time. I think today we were the first to come-in as they opened. So, we ordered Slow Cooked Meat-and-Veggie Lasagna, Boston Baked Beans, and one of my friends built her own. I thought all meals were presented very well. I had the baked beans and I thought it was really tasty. Then beans weren't overcooked and the ham hock is just perfect. Amongst all the baked beans I have had around Geelong, this was one of the best. I had a taste of the lasagna as well. It was alright, although I thought some of the elements have been too mushy - but maybe because it was slow cooked, I wasn't really sure what to expect from it exactly. Overall, the experience was great. Highly recommendable.

So packed in fact that we had about 3 inches on either side of the table to fit our chairs and us in. The tables were way to packed in to be in any way comfortable. So after I squeezed myself into the 3 odd inches of chair space we had some glasses and bottles of water brought to the table. Four glasses for the 5 of us that we had booked for. No worries we got another one, eventually. Then, the most unexpected thing happened...nothing. We waited 20mims for any of the staff to come back and check on us. In that time I could have drunk 2 coffees easily and since I know what coffee I'm having every time I don't see why they wouldn't take a coffee order before we even sit down. As it happened we ordered food and coffee at the same time and settled in expecting a loooonng wait for the food (and coffees). A surprisingly short 10mins later the food came out and it was pretty good. I had the Ploughmans Steak Sandwich which was tasty and didn't fall completely apart like some steak sangas can do. About 5 minutes after the food came out our coffees came out with the explanation of 'Sorry, we had some takeaways.' It seemed like the takeaways were unexpected which is weird. The coffee was really good and would bring me back for that alone. Overall, other than the space issues, there was nothing wrong with this place. The food was good but not spectacular. The coffee was good enough to bring me back and the service, while lacking, was still friendly.

I was wondering why such a popular spot would be so isolated? But all is well worth the effort to get here. The venue is brimming with natural lighting, classic charm and warmth. For my breakfast, I ordered the Pixelated avocado (on a sourdough toast) because it just looked so darn intriguing. I didn't expect anything else to be honest, and turned out this was GOOD!! Every single element in this dish has complex flavors that compliments each other. The chili dried air kale, diced pixelated avocado and the soft shell crab was especially stunning. The dish certainly performs to its Instagram ability. For my drink, I ordered their matcha latte; it was strong tasting yet smooth. I could drink this all day! The Light Years is certainly not disappointing in any way, from the beautiful venue to the outstanding food, supported with service and ambiance for days. Easily, my favorite brunch spot in town at the moment and much to recommend you :).

Recently opened at the bottom of a new apartment block just along from the Camberwell tram depot, it should not be confused with Lights in the Attic cafe which is a bit further down Camberwell Road. The fit out is the now common scandi/minimalist affair with a smattering of potted greenery. Coffee is from Dukes, but the star of the show here is the food. All the dishes I saw coming out looked great and were good sized portions. I had the bircher and it was a generous serve, looked pretty and tasted even better. Overall a good value and tasty option for brunch/lunch in the leafy inner east.

We came to Torquay for the night and our airbnb host suggested we should try Whytes as it was a…read morenice upmarket restaurant. * We viewed the website (no prices online) and we really liked a few of the dishes. Once we sat down the menu was 20% different to online, not a very good start. * We ordered a dozen oysters and a bottle of Champagne. The staff brought out the wrong bottle and if we didn't speak up they would have lost $300. The knowledge of their own small wine list was terrible. Once we got a bottle we wanted we were offered to pop the cork and keep the box (very strange in such a restaurant). * The oysters were tasty but there was no sauce provided, this seems quite standard when you have oysters at a restaurant. * We ordered entrée and mains. The prawns had no real taste but the chorizo was nice. However, the bread which came with it almost broke a tooth as it was so over grilled or toasted. * After waiting over 30 minutes for our tables to be cleared we asked how long the mains would be and the manager said they hadn't been started. By then we had not been very happy with the overall experience so we asked the waitress to cancel our mains and we would get the bill. * The restaurant was maybe 60% full and there were plenty of staff, they just didn't seem to have specific jobs to do so we were left for 30 minutes once we had finished our meals. * The manager was then extremely rude to me and tried to let me know it was my fault our mains weren't delivered as we were still finishing them and having a 'romantic night out'. * When we got the bill the manager didn't apologise or even talk to us, he was one of the most rudest individuals I have ever come across in a restaurant. I would never go back here and I would recommend to the owner to review his staff, they seem under trained and the manager is not customer focused. When you are charging $18-26 for entrées and up to $46 for mains you really need to have everything running smoothly.
