Lake Charleston in neighboring Lake Worth, is a master planned community consisting of over 945 acres of neighborhoods linked by a chain of over 220 acres of lakes. The Lake Charleston Park and Recreation center is next to Manatee Elementary School. The 9.5 acres and is open from sunrise until 10 PM. Park amenities include three picnic tables, a small playground made from recycled materials, restroom, and four lighted softball fields. While the park itself is a public facility, it is closely associated with the Lake Charleston community. Parking is ample, free and shaded. The first playground is designed for smaller children and is designed as a sailboat. A small rock wall, pretend boat helm and two-tiered design appealed to both of my kids (1 and 3). A tiny 'hill' beyond this is the playground for older kids. There were a couple of cool features on the lower levels. Both playgrounds are connected by a sidewalk that continues on in a few different directions - around a lake and through tennis courts. Across from the sidewalks are large fields that I assume are used for soccer, due to the goals. My kids ran around in the mid-length grass/weeds trying to catch dragonflies. The field is very far from the road so it was nice for them to run around without needing to worry. We spotted different kinds of birds and a family of ducks far away. We did walk through the courts (2 tennis and 1 basketball, at least) to another part of a water body (Lake Charleston? No clue!). I was pretty nervous about alligators being that close to the water. We came to a tiny dock that was so covered in bird poop that it was uninhabitable. I didn't see any signs about alligators, but I don't think I'd walk my kids around that part again without a stroller. I'm not sure if it was just a windy day, but these are kind of 'waterfront' playgrounds and definitely received nice breezes. They were also shady with benches and altogether pleasant. Although not fenced, the far proximity from roads is nice and feels protected. The bathrooms are located outside but on the other side of the rec center (not near the playgrounds). They were remarkably nice and clean. We only encountered one other young child here briefly. Otherwise, when I arrived, the smaller playground was being used by a fitness class (for adults), and the larger one was being used by 3 teenagers.

I do wish they would mix up the class times once in a while because I've been going for about two years and schedule hasn't changed much so I end up doing the same classes each week. The instructor Jennifer is great. I love that she does different things each week so I don't get bored with it. The place is clean, large, good staff, nice pool. I like the E gym so you don't have to adjust weights as it remembers when you scan your bracelet. They have a lot of community/family based events.

The management team is always very polite and helpful. One of the main reasons I've stayed so long is their wide variety of classes -- yoga, BodyPump, Pilates, Zumba, HIIT, BodyCombat, and more. I used to LOVE the BodyPump and BodyCombat classes, especially with instructors Zoe and Cindy Lee -- they were incredible. So much energy, motivation, always correcting form and really engaging with the class. Truly my favorites. Unfortunately, after they left, I stopped attending those classes. I did try the new instructor, but the experience was very different -- loud in an uncomfortable way, lots of personal talk during class, and overall not the same professional atmosphere. There was also an awkward situation that made me feel unwelcome. I was filming myself and my friend briefly (as I sometimes do), making sure no one else was in the background. The instructor approached me in a way that felt unnecessarily confrontational, repeating the same comment about not filming, even after I had already stopped and put my phone away. After that, I felt uncomfortable returning to those classes and eventually stopped going altogether -- especially when I noticed the same energy during future visits. That said, the yoga classes are still excellent -- very strong instructor and great experience. The gym itself is well-equipped with modern machines, always clean, and offers great amenities: sauna, steam room, and a pool. Kids' programs are also a big plus -- my children have been taking swimming classes there for years (we've been coming here for about 6 years total), and they love it. When they were younger, we also attended "mommy & me" classes, which were wonderful -- lots of songs, playtime, and interaction. There's also a kids' playroom with staff, toys, and activities, as well as two playgrounds. They even have a daycare, and a small indoor play area available on weekends -- very family-friendly overall. Now, a couple of serious downsides. The building is quite old, and during rainy season the roof leaks -- I've seen water dripping in areas like the café and even the gym floor, with buckets placed underneath instead of fixing the issue. That's definitely concerning. Another important issue is the parking lot. There is an exposed metal rod sticking out where a parking stopper used to be, right near the front entrance by the windows. I personally had a scary experience with it -- it pressed into my car wheel, and I was lucky it didn't puncture the tire. I reported it and even left a review about it, but a year later it still hasn't been fixed. Please be very careful when parking in that area. Overall, it's a place with great potential, strong programs, and a family-friendly environment -- but also with some issues that really should be addressed.
