Dr. Chepke researches each and every medication and therapy that he prescribes and recommends, AND he figures out a way to get that medication to you if you are, like I was, with inadequate or non-existent health insurance. His staff not only researched my insurance to see whether my medications were covered, THEY applied for financial assistance programs through the pharmaceutical companies on MY behalf. When I suddenly started having an inexplicable response to a medication I had been taking, Dr. Chepke listened to my concerns and acted on them. He suggested a test that would determine how my body metabolizes certain meds to better understand my body's tolerances. He let me make the decision about it, since I was a bit cautious. After I decided to have the test, his staff again contacted my insurance company to see what my co-pay would be, and then applied for financial assistance on MY behalf. I am now on one daily med that has quite literally been a life-saver, and doesn't cause the fatigue that's exacerbated by my neurological condition. With every previous psychiatrist, it seemed that prescribing meds was just guesswork. Dr. Chepke checks in with me, he answers questions immediately, he can always make time for me in his schedule, and when I was without the means to pay for his services and without health insurance, he reduced his (already reasonable) fee without my even asking for a discount. Because of this, I could always see him, even when I found myself without adequate work. I cannot recommend Excel Psychiatric strongly enough. A friend of mine raved about their services and sent me their way. She was absolutely right. I'm never going anywhere else for psychiatric care.

I find our conversations very helpful and generally positive in helping me test the ground under my feet. We all want to know we are "okay," and sometimes you get the feeling from doctors that you have to do X, Y, and Z to get to their definition of OK. Dr. Craig helps me get there faster, supports my own awareness of how I feel, and helps me find ways to measure it in everyday life.

Over the past four years, I've almost never been able to reach their office, left without my psychiatric medicine which has caused me to go into withdrawal, and put on medicines which weren't supposed to be combined which caused me to hallucinate and become suicidal. The only reason I continued to come there was because it has the only psychiatrist in my area. When I went to my appointment on June 13th, I arrived at 4:20. My appointment was at 4:15 but the doors were locked and no one would answer when I knocked. I wasn't considered late either, because they have a 7-minute late policy. After calling their office, being transferred to another locations, and then being told it was closed, we left. Today I was told that I had to pay a "no show" fee of nearly $80, on top of the bill for today. We simply did not have the money on us to pay for that, and it wasn't our fault the office was closed when we came. I was also told that since I cannot pay the fee, the psychiatrist is "refusing" (their words) to refill any of my medications or even see me. I told them I cannot go without my medications because its known to be dangerous and damaging. The manager simply shrugged. And we had to leave. I'm not sure what kind of sick service this is that's being offered, but now I am refused psychiatric medication and service. What kind of place is this? P.S. Dr. Melvin gave me my life back. 23 years ago, suffering from major depression, I decided I needed help and chose to find professional help. The first two psychiatrists I contacted tried "quick fixes", and when they didn't help much, they went no further. The a friend recommended Dr. Melvin. My first impression when meeting him was a demeanor of calm professionalism, and and obvious drive to help me with my problem. After a substantial discussion of my symptoms, he decided that medication was the best choice for me. We tried 3 different anti-depressants, all offered some, but not significant help for my depression...but Dr. Melvin did not give up. He suggested a rather obscure "old school" anti-depressant that he had found was sometimes effective when the more recent medications were not. I knew within 2 hours after taking this that my solution had been found. I was so profoundly moved that it was hard to control my emotions. I felt good for the first time in several years. And this has continued, with this medication, for the last 23 years, really the best years of my life. Maybe some other psychiatrist would have been persistent like Dr. Melvin, but maybe not...and I would be where I was 23 years ago. I hardly ever write this sort of thing. I had a gifted psychiatrist in CT who kept me stable and out of the hospital so when I moved to NC two years ago, I was devastated. My health suffered as I searched, three times unsuccessfully, to find the right doctor. Honestly, online reviews were of little use to me in my search for a new doctor in a new state especially those from patients overly enamored or spitefully griping about an experience. I hope this review serves as a candid, honest and critical guide and that it leads you to consider AND meet Dr. Chepke and his staff. Everyone at Excel Psychiatric is patient-centered and the office is run that way. I have regular appointments and NEVER wait longer than 5-10 minutes to see Dr. Chepke or for a ketamine treatment. This is a luxury as I routinely wait, sometimes over an hour to see my PCP or other specialists. The staff is attentive, cheerful and always responsive to my needs whether it is for a refill, insurance authorizations, the boatload of paperwork I routinely need completed or for an appointment. People have complained about getting in to see Dr. Chepke but it has been my consistent experience that if I need an appointment or to change one, I get one promptly and in a timely manner. Dr. Chepke is very involved in education and cutting edge medicine (which is a true bonus) so often travels to conferences and seminars. He and his staff always take this into account and when needed, offer office hours at non-traditional hours INCLUDING weekends. I have never been left dangling as was suggested by a previous reviewer. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Chepke is well-educated and knowledgeable, but more importantly, is extremely involved in knowing the latest treatments and advances in psychiatry. I am currently receiving ketamine from Dr. Chepke and it has changed my life. He is only one of a handful of docs in NC approved to administer this treatment. Ketamine is not a money-maker but Dr. Chepke offers this and other treatments because that is the BEST treatment for his patients. I can't stress how important this commitment is from ANY doctor. It is rare in today's world. Equally important, Dr. Chepke is compassionate, caring and kind...he always focuses on me and my needs and never makes me feel rushed. I am gay and at Excel, I always feel welcome and able to be candid about my life. The office is a true judgement-free zone. I've never had a question or concern not addressed, and Dr. Chepke and his staff are timely in getting back to me with answers and/or a plan. Lastly, I want to mention that I am a physician assistant and am the first to admit that I have high standards and expectations because of my knowledge and experience in medicine. I speak as an unbiased patient and provider when I say that Dr. Chepke is what I'd call "a doctor's doctor." He is THE doctor a doctor wants. Dr. Chepke KNOWS medicine and uses his knowledge and experience with innovation to provide the best treatment possible. He thinks "outside-the-box" when needed and is not afraid to go the extra mile to keep me feeling my Very Best Self.

Week after week I got worse and our follow up appointments were about 5mn long with him literally standing on the doorstep trying to walk out while I tried asking for medication adjustment and re-evaluation. He'd announce we'd just increase it for bit and see how that went. He couldn't get out of the room fast enough. There was always an air of condescendance to him which is isolating to a patient. Bedside manners during depression flare up, while not a cure-all, help a patient gain trust in the Doctor and help ease the anxiety that comes with the enormous mental turmoil. He certainly provided none of that. It was especially frightening because we were new to the area and this was the Dr I needed to help me combat my illness. Things got really bad and I had to find a new Dr. (DR Lurie in Charlotte is fantastic and works WITH me and i have been perfectly well now for 6 years). I would never, ever recommend Dr Fitzgerald.
