Our son is doing ACT prep with Casey McKenna at Mindfish and its been a really great experience so far. Casey is flexible and established a nice rapport with Vincent. When our son (junior at Boulder High) was struggling with Calculus, Ben Tweedlie at Mindfish was amazingly helpful. We have a daughter who is a sophomore at CU Boulder in Chemical Engineering who we realized could also use a tutor for Calculus. My 16 year old found out she was going to see Ben also and said "oh you'll really like him. He's great. He's funny and very helpful at explaining things." I paid MindFish over $2700 for one-on-one tutoring of my senior in connection with the digital SAT. Before hiring MindFish, the score was 1330/June; after hiring MindFish the score was 1380/August and then 1300/October. We were disappointed in the scores after the expenditure of substantial time and a significant amount of money. Friends shared with us similar experiences that their kids had with MindFish. When I asked MindFish if it thought the lack of improvement was because of the new format of the test, it suggested instead that the problem was because we took a 10 day vacation in August (during which time studying took place) and test anxiety. Who knows why my senior's scores went from 1330 to 1380 to 1300, but personally I wouldn't hire MindFish again. read more

Jamie has been tutoring my twin boys all of their Junior year and it has been the best. What I love is that she is versed in many subjects and so basically one stop shopping for us, where they can get the best help with every subject. We are extremely pleased with the test preparation provided by our Mindfish tutor Micki. Micki quickly identified those areas that needed reinforcement and continued to give progressively challenging homework and sample questions. She also worked on testing strategies and time management techniques. My daughter raised her SAT score from her first SAT to the one she took last month by 180 points, scoring a 1530. While our focus was mainly on the SAT, Micki provided some guidance on the differences between the SAT and the ACT, and her test taking strategies were transferable between the two tests. With this guidance, my daughter was able to score a 35 on her ACT. My daughter was initially scheduled to take the SAT in March, and it was cancelled. Before this we had used a different test prep company, and while they provided some discipline to the process, the Mindfish preparation was better organized and provided a more structured approach to mastering the test. I also really appreciated the guidance provided by Bill, one of the co-founders. He sent out emails letting us know when registration for the tests would open, strategies for selecting a testing center with the greater probability of offering the exam and shortcuts to speed up the online registration process. He was constantly communicating cancellations, new registrations and changes, usually quicker than those provided by either the SAT or ACT boards. Every aspect of my experience with Mindfish exceeded expectations. The business' co-owner, Ryan, took the time to understand my son's college goals and test prep needs, identify the tutor who might work best with him, and tailor a plan to increase his ACT score. The tutor, Austin, was awesome in every way. He connected well with my son, who actually looked forward to their weekly sessions, during which they solidified strong areas and worked on weaknesses. Austin reinforced the lessons by assigning homework with materials provided by Mindfish. When I emailed questions about the work or suggestions about motivating my son, Austin was quick to respond and open to ideas. The Mindfish package included practice tests at their offices, which I believe provided invaluable preparation for the actual test. Since results are what matter, it was easy to be thrilled when my son's ACT score increased by 6 points! My daughter had been working hard to study for the SAT/ACT on her own for almost a year using the study guides and free online practice tests. She was getting frustrated because her practice scores weren't getting any higher and she couldn't figure out why. She is an excellent student with great study habits, but she was having a lot of trouble figuring out why she couldn't get through the questions before time ran out, and why she couldn't figure out what some of the questions were asking. She had several friends who were doing SAT tutoring and she asked me if I would sign her up. After looking into some of the national chains like Princeton Review, Kaplan and Study Point and finding out how much they cost, I was not in favor of the idea, and was determined to find out what the heck these classes were offering that would make them cost so much, and whether what they offered was any different than what my daughter was already doing for free. In my quest to find information on those programs, I came across Mindfish, and was happy to find not only a local phone number, but an address that was close enough to my house that I was able to drive right over and check the place out for myself. I stopped by the Mindfish office unannounced, thinking I'd be able to grab a flyer and ask a quick question or two, and was blown away by the friendly reception I received. Ryan, the owner, not only gave me a flyer with information on class dates and prices, but he sat with me for over an hour and answered every question that I had, and even some I didn't know to ask. Before talking to Ryan I was fairly convinced that there was no way I would end up choosing to pay for a class, but after doing my due diligence to find out all the information I could before making a decision, I couldn't find any good reason NOT to choose Mindfish over the other options. First off, the national chains offer very few (if any) in-person classes. They really push the "online learning" model, and insist that taking a virtual class from home is the way to go, when really, it's just a way for them to sign up an infinite number of people to one class without the constraints of room capacity. They also don't offer one-on-one tutoring as part of their base package pricing, and if you do choose to add the one-on-one tutoring option, it will also be done online. When looking at reviews for the other places, I found a lot of them written by ex-employees who complained about stressful work environments that included being given a lesson plan with no instructions, being hired to tutor despite their lack of training in the subject they were hired to teach, and having little, if any, ability to adjust the lesson plan if it wasn't working for the student they were tutoring. At Mindfish, classes are all done in their office, by highly educated people with college degrees, and class sizes are extremely small (my daughter's Sunday evening class had about 6-8 kids on any given day). On top of the weekly classes, each student meets with a tutor one-on-one once a week, to work on any subject or area that they individually need, and the tutors are then able to adjust their weekly classes to appropriately match where they've evaluated the learning needs to be for that week. They are not bound to a specific lesson plan, but do have specific methods for teaching each subject, as well as offering a lot of tips for working through the test methodically in order to complete each section on time, by looking for clues in the questions, and helping them recognize when they can use the process of elimination. This was especially helpful for my daughter, who struggled with time management, and the ability to sometimes recognize what type of question the tests were asking. Throughout the 2 month program, they also offer official practice tests on various Saturdays that are meant to replicate the real test, and give the kids a chance to get comfortable with the test taking environment, and the time constraints, as well as evaluate their progress throughout the program. When my daughter took her first practice ACT test, she scored a 27. Mindfish was honest with the fact that results rely very much on what your kid chooses to put into the class and their study time, and that they are not a magic pill that can promise a score simply by signing up. We went into it with a realistic expectation and hoped that the class would help my daughter to at least figure out a better strategy to taking the test that would help her complete it on time, and hopefully increase her score a little. I'm happy to report that she took her first official test and scored a 32. She now has an ACT score that meets the requirements for all the Ivy Leagues, and the most competitive Universities in North America (except Cal Tech), which was her goal, so we are extremely happy. Money very well spent that will pay off 100 fold in scholarships that she now qualifies for. read more

The Test Prep Mindfish provided me with was very helpful. When I started working with Austin Kellogg, my ACT practice score wasn't where I wanted it to be. Austin and Mindfish helped me raise my score 5 points, and really opened up a lot of doors for me college wise. I singed up to prepare for the ACT with Mindfish, but I also took a PSAT during the time I was working with Austin, and he helped me better prepare for that test as well. Rather than just take practice test after practice test, the experts at Mindfish helped him pinpoint areas in which to focus his efforts so he could use his preparation time productively. I am a do-it-yourselfer. I had my kids study for their ACTs through the online resources offered through the school and bought the ACT prep books for test practice. I have two kids-one grade apart. My first daughter took her 1st ACT last year after a few months of prepping herself and scored a decent score but not as good as she wanted. I ran into a friend whose daughter scored a 36 on her ACT and asked for advice. She suggested Mindfish. After two months of tutoring, my daughter took the test again and raised her score by 6 points. She went from a 27 to a 33. Let me tell you-that 33 opened doors wide open for acceptance and scholarships. Money well spent for sure. Second daughter comes along-she's a solid test taker and I tried to go the inexpensive route again...and she scored a 24. She just took the February test after working with Mindfish from November through January and scored a 31. The tutoring not only showed them how to master the ACT but my daughters have both said that it has helped them with their studying and tests at school. read more

I couldn't have been happier with the results from Mindfish Test Prep. My daughter worked privately with Alex. Because of time constraints, they were only able to meet once a week for 6 weeks and she was unable to take any of the practice tests. Even with that limited amount of time, she boosted her score by 4 points. Based on her earlier ACT, Alex was able to hone in on what she's was struggling with and/or missing and by focusing on just those areas, she improved to a 31. Both of my older brothers went through Mindfish classes and tutoring sessions, and they got 35s on the ACT. So I went in with a single mission: to beat my brothers. Because of Mindfish and the one-on-one sessions, I was allllmmost able to get there -- with a 34. But I won Round 2: the Math Level 2 SAT II. Another tough competition, with a score to beat of 790. With Mindfish's help, I prepped and prepped and beat them with an 800! Now I joke that "upper level math is just not their thing..." But seriously, without Mindfish, I wouldn't have come even close to getting the scores I needed to go to the schools I am applying to. read more

More than anything, I feel Mindfish helps students who possess standardized test anxiety. However, to fully reap the benefits of the Mindfish Test Prep course, the student must take full advantage of all the classroom sessions and I recommend they also utilize all the available practice exercises and tests that Mudfish has available. In other words, to achieve the desired results, the student must be willing to put in the work to properly prepare. Initially, the company ensured that my daughter was placed with an instructor whose teaching approach was most suited to her learning style. After 2 group sessions, the instructor identified that my daughter would benefit more from individual tutoring than group sessions and adjusted her learning plan accordingly.
