    Book purchase in hand!

I had just finished my fitness routine and I saw the two signs pointing in the direction of the Central Library. Once inside, I assumed the sale would be in the cafe. Nope! The book sale was in the Rotary Club Community Room. Dozens of cardboard boxes filled with books of almost every genre. After circling the room, I made a selection and I think the room attendants secretly wanted my book to quench their reading curiosity. Nah! It's mine :)

Amazing structure with beautiful history. I use their library to study and they had many options to pick from

As I drove down Wisconsin Avenue, my GPS beeped--I had reached my destination. There was a parking lot with a sign that stated "library parking." I swung my car into the lot, paid $3 for an hour, hurried the kiddo out of the car, and looked around. "Where is it?" my son asked. "I'm not sure," was my reply. Then we both gazed at a stately pillared, limestone building across the street. It couldn't be.... Or, could it? I spied a plaque near the steps that read, "Public Library", and directed my son. He stopped... "Are you sure that's not...I don't know...a capitol building of some sort?" Never mind Milwaukee isn't Wisconsin's capitol. We're still a bit new to WI, so I let that pass. I understood his point. This location (the central branch and headquarters) of the Milwaukee Public Library is nothing short of grand. Housing Milwaukee's original library collections since 1898, the domed and pillared building demands notice. And, as striking as it is on the outside, it's interior is equally so. Entering into the rotunda, you are met with marble and opulence. Beyond the rotunda, however, the real treasure lies. The library houses expansive collections of books of all sorts and an impressive collection of audio books, DVDs, and music CDs as well. On our first visit, we were directed to a help desk where we were able to get our library cards. Once we were official library patrons, we went in search of the historical section as my son was on the hunt for a book for a research project. There are plenty of computers available in every section (to search the catalog) and all the shelves/areas are well defined. We were able to find his book in no time (and a fun audio book to boot). Well organized with workers eagerly willing to help in whatever section you find yourself, this library is beautifully laid out and competently run. Bonus? They have several self check out stations and so there was no waiting when we checked out. A beautiful building housing a marvelous collection of books. As my father stated when I texted him a picture of the exterior, "They have real class back in Wisconsin." We do, dad. We really, really do. Get to it!

Excellent library with great staff, wonderful collection in a gorgeous building. Drive through (!) lane that allows bicycles (it is a bit steep going up though). Interesting art displays rotate through here and there aren't just a lot of books to choose from there are DVD and CD choices, lots of periodicals and these things called newspapers (actual news not made up for entertainment printed on cheap paper, strangest thing). I've also found this a good place to read, ponder, and get some work done. Great location downtown, served well by the county bus system, lots of bicycle parking, and if you drive you can usually find a spot within walking distance. I think America would be a better place if more people spent less time on Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook and instead came to the library and read some books and maybe the Washington Post.

So far, I must say this is one of the most beautiful libraries that I have ever visited (I need to visit the Library of Congress still). I came back a second time during my vacation here, because I loved it so much. Besides the vast amount of books here, the Neo-renaissance architecture of this library is spectacular and the size is enormous as it fills an entire block in length and width. The library has a nice collection of art displayed on the walls throughout the top floor of the library and offers a window into the past of this great city. One part of the library seemed to be closed off upstairs, which is behind the staircase. Maybe it is for genealogy, it appeared like this section of the library is from the early 1800's. It was stunning. The MPL also has a lovely children's section that is cornered off by its self. My kids loved it. They have a lighthouse right inside the library for kids to enjoy. My kids were able to get on their computers that are full of educational games that teach reading, writing and help build their logical skills. I definitely recommend this library. Now if only we had a library half as good as this in Atlanta. [Review #308] (Sixty Eighth Review of 2015)

Love it here. The building is beautiful and the staff are always more than helpful. The suggested books (on tables rather than shelved) always catch my attention and I end up reading something I wouldn't otherwise pick up. Last time I was there, Vision Forward had a display of portraits titled "My Heart is Not Blind." The stories were interesting and moving. I always learn something unexpected when I visit, which brings the old slogan "More than a book"'to life.

This place is the most beautiful library I've been to. It's a great addition to Milwaukee and it's residents. Recently, I was in the area and the girlfriend mentioned coming here. She's been here dozens of times yet I was the newbie. Walking into this place it looks like a museum with all the marble columns and the grand rotunda. After you stare in aww of all of this you walk through to the stairs where you can end up on multiple levels depending on what you're looking for or quite levels that you need. This place has computers, friendly staff, and eclectic mix of patrons that make it a truly great place to get your study on or check out more about mke or whatever you're interested in.

The MPLs gorgeous rotunda from inside.

Now that's a library! Enjoy a free tour or just a quick visit to the foyer if you don't have time for research. Just beautiful.

So we walked over to check it out. The building feels much less like an art museum than a historic house. The house was completed in 1911, and it is beautiful. We did a quick self-guided tour through each of the rooms, but we didn't stay long. There's art in each of the rooms, pieces collected by Charles Allis. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this museum, but it's not a bad place to visit if you're in the area and have a few minutes to spare.

We were greeted warmly, and given a map and information on the temporary exhibit and permanent collection when we entered. The survey of Wisconsin art "Forward..." new art by seemingly younger artists, was cool, and hung throughout the Museum. The exhibit was a nice compliment to the older art, which includes pieces by Winslow Homer. Part of the charm of visiting the Allis Art Museum is seeing period art displayed in a period space. Rooms dedicated to the Barbizon or Hudson River Schools are also amazing for their period furnishings and history. See the Billiards room in the basement for a single lane bowling alley reminiscent of "There Will Be Blood", and also a creepy shower with a "Needle" faucet- What? The newer Rahill hall looks like a big old dance hall, and would be a cool space for a small event or mixer. I'm surprised to be only the sixth reviewer for this gem of a museum.

The main exhibit might be up for a 2-3 years and then there's a new neighborhood exhibit series that is set to change up more frequently. I visited my first time during Milwaukee Museum week so admission was FREE. But I would pay full admission ($8) if you really want a deep dive into Milwaukee. When I dropped in, the beer exhibit was up so everything displayed related to Milwaukees's beer culture and history. It was FASCINATING. There's also an actual bank vault inside the building that was used in the filming of the movie, Public Enemies, with Johnny Deep. You can walk inside the vault. The space is also worth mentioning - lots of marble. It's just a fun place to escape to. I recommend you plan to spend at least two hours here if you want to really read all the information on display and see all the artifacts. Parking might be tricky - street parking is the way to go if you can find a spot.
