Academy of Martial Arts - Black Belt Test: Day 4 - Spirit Day

This place will change your life…read more Do I have your attention? Good. The Academy of Martial arts is what you have been looking for. Whether you want to up your fitness level, learn self defense, teach your child self-confidence and respect or find a place to de-stress while spending time with other wonderful people, this is the place to be. I grew up in this school, starting here with Sensei Robert when I was around 9-10 years old. I was timid, sickly, asthmatic and lacking self confidence. Sensei Robert and the other instructors guided me and truly helped me find myself. The Academy of Martial Arts isn't just a place you go to class and leave, you truly grow roots into this school. Everyone knows everyone, and you make real, lifelong friends (and family) here. I am 28 years old now, I live 40 minutes away, and I still make the drive once a week to train here because of how truly special this place, and everyone in it, is. If you are looking for more technical information, you would be hard pressed to find someone as knowledgeable as Sensei Robert (as well as his staff). Through his long career, he has studied with many greats and the instructors that have come through the school have all impacted the Academy in some small or great way. The RDCA style is unique, combative oriented and something that Sensei Robert spends countless hours shaping and refining. If there were 100 stars on Yelp, I would give them all to the Academy. From Jeet Kun Do, to Tae Kwon Do, from Brasilian Jiu Jitsu to Eskrima, from Krav Maga to Thai Boxing, from unarmed defense to gun and knife defense - and EVERYTHING in between. You will strengthen yourself - inside and out and truly push yourself. If you stick to it and experience the Black Belt Test, you will go through an experience that no words can describe. My first Black Belt Test, as well as the subsequent ones I have tested in or supported in, will forever be in my heart. Do yourself a favor, try a class, you will never look back.

He has developed a unique, accredited form of MMA that athletes from around the world recognize as the best - in fact, the last testing session I attended had black belt candidates from Asia, Europe and South America. They all recognize the superior nature of the RDCA and came to be tested by the Master himself. Very friendly staff but results oriented. They know when to push and when to assist. You will be amazed by the results.

I have no background in martial arts…read more I had heard great things about how Brazilian JJ is great fun and helps you get in shape, but I was a little worried at my age about getting injured. Several good friends suggested that I took a "free trial" class at Rilion Gracie Academy. They explained to me that the Gracie family is legendary for creating a version of Jiu Jitsu called Gracie or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In the first class they let me borrow a Gi (Kimono) as I didn't have one. My nervousness quickly disappeared and I was really impressed with how kind and welcoming all of the students and professors were. They really made it clear to me that this is like joining a family and they would take great care of me! They were true to their word and everyone here has been amazing! I've now gone to a dozen "fundamentals" classes and am super addicted to both the sport and the amazing CULTURE they have created here. They have much more advanced classes, but I haven't tried those yet. I'm going to bring my kids here as well (they have dedicated kids classes). I know they are going to love it! If there was such a thing as 6 stars I would give it to Rilion Gracie Academy!

The bathrooms are clean and there are organizational racks for gear bags and shoes. The instruction is very good and is on a tight schedule, i.e. for kids 5:30 to 5:35 warmup, technique introduction and practice 5:35 to 5:50, practice on technique controlled rolling until 6:10, cooldown and bow out with class ending exactly at 6:15. The kids get to hang around and play on mat 15 minutes before and after class. I think this actually motivates the kids to come to class. The professor is liberal in a case by case basis for kids that have enough strength, technique, to go to the 10 to 18 year old class. They can either do both classes or some parents who have older children will have thier younger kids go to the junior class if they can hang. Attendance varies wildly. I have seen 24 kids in children's class to only four on Fridays, which tend to be small classes. They are very flexible for people who have to withdraw for moving, or even temporarily for an injury. The only two negatives that I have noted is on having two instructors when the classes were larger than twenty in the kid's class. The second negative is that there is limited seating for parents which could be easily resolved with some folding chairs.
