Karate MAS at the Falls has been the best thing to happen this year for my 5 year old son with ADHD. Mr. mignaco and his team are talented and kind instructors that are passionate about teaching kids and adults the art of karate. We visit this dojo at least 4 days per week, plus they have all day camps when school is out, and they have ninja nights/ parents night out at least once a month. My son loves it here and is learning self control, how to focus, discipline, respect, self defense, and so many other important karate and life skills. They are constantly cleaning and the best part is that it's a large studio / dojo so parents can sit inside and watch their kids. In fact, parents actively participate when kids ask for permission to break the boards, or to confirm children are also behaving at home to move up in belt promotion levels. I love that they let you try the classes first and there is never pressure to join. Unlike other studios in the area, they have multiple instructors working collaboratively with the students so each students gets a lot of one on one time. Plus they make earning stripes, boards, and other award really entertaining, fun, and encouraging for the kids. I highly recommend Mr. Mignaco and Mr. Affon at Karate MAS the Falls for anyone looking to learn karate.

Kudos to Mr. Haynes and Ms. Ozuna for running and maintaining excellent programs for kids and adults focusing on technique, form and discipline. Most classes are evenly balanced between boys and girls and depending on the level of experience, the class is divided in groups to maximize the learning experience. Based on a belt ranking system, students start w a white belt and as they master the forms required, monthly held belt ceremonies will be awarded accordingly. It is a great rewarding system and both instructors do a superb job in their delivery of material and technique while at the same time making an emphasis on the importance of self control and discipline. The initial cost of the program may deter and/or scare some folks but based on what you are buying in return, it is more than its worth. Once you are in the ATA system, the ranking, program status, etc. can be transferred to any other ATA school in the nation as it was explained to us when we first signed up. Overall, it was a good investment and we see positive results already and it has been about two months thus far. the facility is well designed and organized. it makes a difference when the instructions go the extra mile paying attention to the details. they really go above and beyond. there is ample parking and since they are located inside a strip plaza, it is pretty safe and well lit. They also offer camps for spring/summer/winter breaks as well as most teacher work days, etc. so you can drop off the kids on those days if you don't have any other option. If you are unsure, come by and try out the program for free and find out just how much fun Mr. Haynes and Ms. Ozuna are to be around whether you are out there on the floor or being a spectator! The sitting area is pretty good size and bathrooms are located towards the back. so go check it out! ATA!!!

He is very stern during class but in a loving way, he jokes around so the kids dont feel bad but he actually gets the parents laughing too. I thought it would be sort of a chore to take my son to the classes but we both look forward to it now We started the classes in April, 3 days a week. Then in june he went everyday for the summer camp. He was so upset when camp was over he didnt realize he could continue the afternoon classes. Now he is so happy again going to see his karate family. His behavior has changed so much for the better, he is much more respectful towards his dad and i, and not to mention he is eating better and he is ACTUALLY TIRED at the end of the day!!! I used to take him to the park for hourrrs to wear him out but now he comes home, eats his dinner and is ready to sleep i cant thank sensei enough for all his help, if your looking for a class or even after school, contact sensei and try for a day.. i promise you, you'll see a difference.

Sensei Jose is the teacher and he is amazing! He's tough on the kids, but in a loving way. In other words, he EXPECTS discipline of all his students in and out of the class. He expects them to work hard at their karate, have good hygiene (he checks their hands for dirtiness every class. Dirty hands? Drop and give me ten push-ups!) and do chores at home and school. Sensei doesn't mess around! But the students love him. He's tough but then makes them laugh hysterically with his jokes. More kids need teachers like this. I won't go into a rant but a lot of parents coddle their kids. How do you expect them to survive the real world when they grow up if you're telling them "you're so great!" every time they turn around and giving them medals if they come in past place? Sensei don't play that. He expects hard work and dedication. In return, the kids gain discipline, work ethic, confidence a whole lot more. I need to get Sensei to work on the slight foot smell in the place but I guess that's hard when there are a hundred bare feet in there every day. They have classes for all ages so I highly recommend this place.

From having confidence in my ability to defend myself to how to engage with my coworkers and students, or be a dad, there is something to be learned from karate for every area of your life. Fast-forward to today and I, my (now 20 year old daughter), my son (14), and my baby (6) all are students. This place is a second home for us; I even met my husband at the dojo. Over the years I have seen so many people entrust their children to this place and all because of one thing, the Sensei (teacher). This dojo, through its Sensei and other senior practitioners, offers something many other dojo's do not, a true understanding and love for the martial art of karate. They pass this on to the students. OGKI is about more than punching and kicking. At OGKI students receive more than just basic martial arts instruction. They also get philosophy, history, forms, fighting skills, social skills, and will gain self awareness. There are two classes, children and teen/adults. All classes meet Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The kids' class is an intro to karate and intgrates basics with conditioning and a lot of fun. Most of the kids seem to love it. The adult class brings all of these skills together. It is noteworthy to add that you can totally start as an adult. I started at age 32, and am fine! Overall I highly recommend this dojo for anyone looking for traditional Okinawan Karate. You won't regret it.

Osu! If you are looking to get fit, learn self-defense, and get serious about full-contact karate,…read morethis is the place. Kyokushin is one of the best forms of self-defense as it incorporates the best of other forms of martial arts and includes very rigorous training along with discipline. If you're a wimp and don't like sweating, getting thrown around and getting bruised, don't sign up as this is not for you. I am considered to be kind of rough so I like it and don't mind the bruising. I wear my bruises with pride as a testimony of my effort. At Kyokuyama, you will quickly feel like family among the friendly students, as well as the instructor, Shihan Guzman. There is no arrogance here, only a desire to learn and help others improve while understanding that learning is a never-ending journey. Shihan Guzman is very polite and enjoys sharing many stories, either before or after class, as class is strictly for learning. Several of his children are at the school, and they are all as friendly as he is. It is very rare to find a Kyokushin dojo, but it is especially hard to find a place where everyone is friendly and treats you like a member of their family. You never have to feel awkward about training with the black belts or asking them for help, as they are more than happy to do so. They will even work with you after class if you need more preparation for your belt test. The good thing about this school is that you will practice your technique and fight (kumite) with people of all ages, ranks, genders, and sizes. The prices here are very competitive especially considering all the learning taking place, and the schedule is so ample (from morning to late in the evening, even on Saturdays) that it is hard to truly be unable to make it to class. There are both male and female students although I won't lie to you, there are only a handful of females, but if you think the men will treat you any differently from them just because you're female, think again. They are very respectful but they won't underestimate your strength or patronize you. Their goal is to push you and make you as strong as they are so that eventually, you will become immune to pain. I'm tired of always being treated like a dainty, delicate girl just because I am short and so feminine, so I welcome this change as I enjoy being treated like a true equal. The dojo also has classes for children as young as 5. Kyokuyama is truly a rare gem in Miami and I am truly glad to have become a member. You're welcome to stop by and check out our dojo. You can also try it out if you like. Ask Shihan Guzman for one trial session, free of charge.
