Millikan High School - Middle Schools & High Schools Near Me - Long Beach, California

As someone somewhere sometimes and always has often said, high school and other milestone experiences in life is what you make of it. As the mother of two sons who have successfully graduated with high honors at this school, I come away from here having generally positive thoughts and feelings about their particular high school journeys. In total, I was a Millikan parent for 6 years from 2017 thru 2023. During these years, I saw them transition to Zoom instruction during Covid, then return to in-person classes. It is a large school of about 3,000-4000 students. There are many options for A-G requirement courses (English, Math, Science etc), many AP courses available to choose from (such as Human Geography, Computer Science, French, German etc.) and various electives offered (such as Dance, Jazz, Band, Vocal, Photography, Museum studies, etc). I can speak highly of the COMPASS program in which my First-Born was a part of--allowing him to be surrounded by creative oriented peers and teachers. And I can also speak highly of the PEACE program which my Youngest was a part of allowing him to be surrounded by social justice oriented peers and teachers. Both programs allow for high achieving goals as you can choose to take as many AP courses as you want at your discretion and ability level. The cost of taking the test for the students is $5.00 (the district pays for the difference which is something over $100) and allows the student to take the commendable risk of taking the test without too much pressure cost wise--and the rewards of passing is actual college credit that not only saves time but helps stamp down costs for college. As parents, we're particularly grateful for these benefits. They have career counseling, tutoring services, and they help with college applications, filling out the FAFSA etc. I also believe they have a Food Pantry to help out students with food insecurity and other services offered...please contact the school directly to inquire about these services and take advantage of them as needed. We're not a sports family, but they also have a variety of sports--some highly recognized and many of these athletes win scholarships. Are there down sides? Yes. As with any school, I'm sure, not every class and/or teacher is talented or dedicated. For the highly motivated student, the need to effectively navigate these situations (often with palpable frustration) is necessary. Some teachers are called to be teachers, some see it as just a job and a paycheck. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but that's just the truth and a real part of the experience. I wish the Administration kept a better eye on these situations to make sure they hire the best staff for the benefit of the students--but that will be an on-going issue, at this school and anywhere else. The vaping...you definitely hear stories. And the school feels that locking bathrooms is a way to discourage this situation--except now students have the challenge to find restrooms that are open. Definitely not ideal. And I'm sure there are many other negative experiences and stories out there. The existence and absence of drama is a personal one and really just depends on the student. The school does have a uniform policy--not terribly difficult to follow and frankly, cost effective. Overall advice: research the surrounding high schools since LBUSD does have a School of Choice policy. Attend the Site Nights and feel out the fit for your student. Some feel more right than others. Millikan, at least for us, was the best fit. read more

Millikan high school located on Palos Verdes between Spring and Willow Street in the city of Long Beach. This high school has been out here for a while has plenty arrivals from Lakewood high school. Wilson high school poly high school Millikan is a good high school pretty good quiet neighborhood efficient their soccer team their water polo team, their badminton team and their baseball teams pretty good teams and volleyball basketball lotta sports. Milliken is a pretty good school to be at and you've live in the area. It's pretty pretty good it's close it is 405 in the 605 freeway it is a quiet neighborhood, so nice cool lotta great kids check them out Millikan high school.. read more

So the frosh soccer team plays really tough and dirty I hope the coach doesn't train the girls this way if they're loosing the game they start to get violent and start hitting the other players from the other team and not just as part of the game but physically and personal manner Someone needs to pay attention to this problem before they hurt other players. read more

My student is currently a Senior at Millikan high. As with any school there is good and bad. On a scale of 1-10 the experience has been about a 7 or 8 over all. Most of the teachers we have experienced have been great. Very nice and easy to work with. A few however have been a nightmare I recommend you avoid at all costs. Ms Uchebegulam ( very nasty), Ms. Julie Simpson ( a chronic liar and b*#ch) also the lady in the office who is in charge of attendance. ( Don't know her name ). read more

Something needs to be done about the school bullying epidemic. I've been severely bullied at this school and principal and staff did nothing. I was emotionally shamed by some teachers there. It would be great if Millikan can make a high effort to reduce school bullying or make an anti-bullying program there. read more

All I can talk about is the football field. The field is old, full of holes and very muddy. Two kids hurt their ankles because of the holes. The staff that ran the football field were not very nice and not happy they had to be at the school on a Saturday. The little I do know about the actual school is that the staff is great!! I made it to my second year of Pharmacy School and my final year of schooling ever, so I'd say my high school did a pretty good job getting me to where I am today. Was in QUEST, took a bunch of APs, really enjoyed the chemistry classes that Mr. Allen (that jokester) taught, I don't know why my AP Calculus teacher is teaching in a high school because he's such an awesome teacher but I'm glad he did, and Mrs. Faust's AP Euro class was probably the hardest class I ever took in high school, but I learned a lot from it and did really well on the exam. Shame she retired. My counselor was top notch too, helped me apply for schools and wrote recommendations without any complaints. But yeah, I can't imagine where I'd be if I didn't go here. Millikan has been definitely one of the worst schools I've been too and I've been to many schools in my life. I'm currently a senior in the school and I really regret not leaving. Now it's just kinda too late, and with everything going on with COVID I just don't care to transfer anymore. Millikan is full of staff and teachers that don't care, and they not only show it, they make kids feel the same way. Those staff and teachers are unhappy everyday and they're allowed to teach kids? Just why? All they do is fight with students, there's no talking about things and half the time those teachers and staff make sure you feel powerless. They make a "HIGH SCHOOL" feel like a prison. They don't respect IEP's and they don't respect the students. All those people do is go in for a pay check. There are some teachers and staff I can name off that are absolutely amazing in Millikan but the sad part is that the other list of teachers that just shouldn't be teaching is WAY bigger. Millikan clams to be the best school in Long Beach but it's not true. It's the complete opposite and I don't recommend and I never will recommend putting your kids in Millikan. read more

I can't believe I am reviewing my own high school. In the late 90's the classes sucked with the exception of a few good teachers here and there. I heard all the classes at every high school in the district are migrating into "programs." Completely lame. Some kid set the bleachers on fire one year; that was about the extent of anything remotely fun at the school. read more

I absolutely LOVED my four years at Millikan. Quite frankly, you get out of high school what you put into it, and Millikan is no exception. There are tons of clubs and activities to join, and the teachers are INCREDIBLE. Especially the teachers who are involved with the PEACE Academy. They genuinely care about their students, and on any given day you can find students just hanging out in their PEACE classrooms, whether it's during passing period, nutrition, lunch, or after school. The only thing I didn't like about Millikan was the uniform policy...other than that, it was an amazing high school. I'll definitely miss it! read more

Amanda you are so wrong I am sure your experiece was that of a rebelious teenager. Millikan High school is a wonderful school and the teachers (most of them) are wonderful. The small learning communities are wonderful and had something for everyone. My child is graduating this year with high honors and has been accepted to good colleges. The only bad thing I can say is some of the sports programs are not to good and they seem to focus on boys soccer only and the football coach needs a change. Other than that I see no difference than other area HS's and Millikan is in a great neighborhood! read more
