Going through the museum I was overwhelmed by the history our nation has experienced in the past century and this century. Part of me wanted to read every display and look at every detail. Time was brief though. This was my second visit to this museum. There are three different areas in this museum: The military police, chemical, and engineer museum. There are three gift stores inside, and they were full of items I could not get outside of the base in most stores except online. I got post cards of the crossing pistols, a giant hoodie jacket, and tee with the crossing pistols.

Sadly our guide Macy was less "passionate cave enthusiast" and more "reciting a script she's said a thousand times and stopped listening to herself." I still don't know how this part of Missouri used to be an ocean based on the tour. She gave the exact same intro four separate times. Not because groups were bumping into each other, just straight up robot mode, probably from also trying to work in the photo package pitch every single time. Ask a follow up question and you'd get a shrug dressed up as an answer. A kid asked about a mineral and got a confident "nope, not that" immediately followed by "I'm not really a gem expert," which, ma'am, pick one. Nobody could tell us where all the clay that used to be in the cave went (there's a lot of water now after the excavation), how the bootleggers pulled off their operation, or whether the cave's ever taken earthquake damage. Also they sell alcohol at the gift shop right before you head into a dark cave, which feels like a liability seminar waiting to happen. What indigenous tribe did the skeleton remains belong to? How did you know it was an indigenous person(s)? What is the difference between an arrowhead and a spear, and when did those relics be given to be on display? She said the stairs were built by child labor because there are child sized handprints in the concrete, but provided no evidence of truth or why. Was it his 18 kids? No one knows. At least it was cool inside while the weather was hot outside. The cave has a story to tell. Macy just wasn't the one telling it. Would recommend the cave, would not recommend Macy. She already told us she's had a bad Yelp review, and I'm sad to say I understand why.

The animals all behave, like to play and love the attention and crackers. I have never seen so much pig paraphernalia! We wanted to rent the Christoper Wren church for an anniversary…read more They initially quoted a price of $2,000. and were totally inflexible even with reduced needs (i.e., afternoon only, no rehearsal the night before). That was not quite right, but we accepted it. But when we were ready to confirm, they advised us that they were bumping up the price by 40% (so $2,800 total), plus were adding a $500 cleaning fee, none of which was on their website or mentioned in any of their prior correspondence with us. Their excise was, "Oops, we didn't get around to updating the website?" Pathetic. Then, even though we'd already been communicating for a while, they said they wouldn't honor the $2,000 price. They said we were asking for a "discount," but what we were actually asking them to do was to simply honor their original quote. Their response was that they wouldn't budge on the preposterous $800 increase by even a dollar. A visit to the facilities is enjoyable. But avoid trying to do business with them, because they have no character or integrity.

Our tour guide was the same young man who served as our guide a day eariler at the Daniel Boone home and historic site. He is a recent graduate with a degree in history and again gave a wonderful, informative tour. The Deutschheim State Historic Site includes two historic homes that are part of the tour -- the Pommer-Gentner House (1840) and the Strehly House and Winery (1842). Derek started our tour in the garden behind the visitor's center and then moved into the Pommer House which served as their residence and as their workshop where they manufacturered pianos and other musical instruments. After the Pommer House, we walked down the block to the Strehly House and Winery. These were originally two separate buildings that were later connected into a single building. The residental portion of the structure was well-perserved. We had a tour of the winery section and a newpaper/printing area in the basement. Derek was quite knowledgable and very informative. He seemed to be enthused about his job and tried answering any questions we posed. Well, when it came time that I needed to do some digging around for local Missouri lore related to square dancing, I did a little checking on their website and as Emeril says, BAM!, they cooked up exactly what I needed. The best part was, it was free. I mean, I guess my taxes are paying for it, but the folks who work there are really helpful, they actually seem like they want to assist me, and they had all this equipment for me to use when I needed to listen to some cassette tapes and even some reel-to-reel audio. Of course, there were some weird things I had to get used to. No pens. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zed. But I could carry around electromagnets, no problem? Anyhow, that being said, I had to get used to other archivist rules (keep everything that was in a folder, actually keep it in the folder). But since they deal with one-of-a-kind stuff, and they don't want to lose anything, this makes sense. I wish I had a reason to delve into their archives earlier, now this place is on my list whenever I have any inkling to learn something about Missouri history.
