What bothered me was that the actor drank and spit his drink over half of the audience thinking that was a funny thing to do. I was heavily sprayed! In this era of covid and a triple threat of infections, this is extremely irresponsible behavior that is being allowed by this theatre. I will NEVER return... and I pray I did not catch anything from this vile act.

August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone is set in 1911, and is about a group of people searching...after emerging from the 300-year experience of slavery. While the community that Mr. Wilson created is about a very specific time and place for African Americans, he also shows that all of humanity wrestled with the same universal questions. Who am I? What happened to me? Where is my love? Where am I going? And in August Wilson's own words, "Why God got to be so big?" The entire cast including the youth were excellent! Bravo! Bravo! My ol' Cinema Detroit review has been badly in need of an update for years now as they've been in a…read morenew building for I don't even know how long now. Everybody talks about this place being quirky but you should have seen their old spot! Honestly, I miss the old Burton school, even still. It was kind of an awkward set up, as they detailed in a little film short they ran during the previews directly before and after the move, but it just had charm and style for miles. The entrance from the parking lot was a strange walk around the rear of the building that felt sketchy to many and though they had a lift it wasn't the most disabled friendly place but it seemed like they made do. I loved that place. I saw a lot of movies there. The current digs my sister used to live at back in the 90s when it was a couple of lofts. There's a nice waiting room with couches which CD didn't have before. Adult tickets are $9. It's cheaper for students, seniors, members and kids. Concessions are eminently reasonable. I got a small popcorn and a can of Faygo grape (they were out of Red Pop and Rock n Rye) with my ticket for less than $15. Small popcorn really is small here, though, not like at a multiplex where even the small is like $7.50 and is freakin huge. Cinema Detroit also carries La Croix for all you hipsters, but I won't hold it against them. There's two auditoriums and last weekend I was busy avoiding changing a flat tire in awful weather so I saw movies in both. If Beale Street Could Talk showed in the larger room, which is actually movie theater size. Sit up front if you're short. Unlike at the Burton school, a proper movie theater with a floor that gradually ascends the further you get from the screen, the floor here is flat with no risers further away from the screen. The screen is up just high enough that the silhouettes of people's heads ended for me before the bottom of the picture projected begins, but I can see how more vertically challenged viewers might run into problems here. No tiers!! The two rows at the very rear are tall stools but other than that everybody is right at the same level. It's just a big room that somehow lacks the ambience of a true cinema. That's where the current location of Cinema Detroit loses that fifth star from me. The smaller theater is barely a theater at all but it's so homey and intimate I like it a lot better than the big one. It seats 16 and has mostly well broken in couches. Same deal for shorties, but the room is only 4 rows deep. It's like you have this really cool friend who turned a room in their house into a theater to show off-beat movies. I saw The Wife there. It must have been intense drama week at Cinema Detroit. Both films were very good, but they both packed an emotional whallop. Especially If Beale Street Could Talk. Besides the venerable Detroit Film Theater in the back of the DIA, Cinema Detroit is the only game in town for art house and independent movies. If you're talking 7 days a week, it IS the only game in town, as the DFT's schedule is pretty limited (and they lack a second mini-theater to show multiple films). Beyond that, you're driving out to Royal Oak, Bloomfield Township or even Ann Arbor. Hell, even with all the new businesses that have sprung up in the D the past several years, the Bel Air out at 8 Mile and Van Dyke is still the only multiplex showing mainstream fare in the city proper. And once in awhile Cinema Detroit will show a more wide release movie. I remember they had Black Panther. Go ahead and make an Old Man Yells at Cloud meme about me grumbling how the former Burton school location was better. It had a pool table in the men's room! The row of lockers lining the basement hall still had graffiti from back when it was a school! I still like Cinema Detroit but I just don't go anywhere near as much. Hmmm, maybe they flattened my tire...

What an entertaining night out in Downtown Detroit! I was here last night for their performance of…read moreFlow (SO great!) and it was just awesome. The theatre is surprisingly large (I was told it seats 1200) and while the seats are old school and thus aren't the most comfy I still had a great time! The stage size is impressive and the set design was great, thrusting out into the audience which made the show feel really intimate. They are able to pull off lots of wonderful effects (lighting, fog, etc) which add to the impressive feel. The building itself has been around since the early 1900s and it shows, but not in a bad way. Lots of lovely wood touches and it's got a bit of a worn down look that I found really charming. We had tickets at will call and the process of picking them up was so quick it didn't matter that I was making my way to my seats with only a couple of minutes to spare. The ushers (who I believe are other WSU students) were really friendly when seating us, asking us questions about how we heard about the show, where we were from, etc. I've certainly been around my fair share of bitchy ushers and these folks made me feel welcome from the get go. The parking lot takes a bit of winding through the American Red Cross lot to get to but it's awesome because it's free and you can be sure your car is safe rather than parking it on the street and hoping for the best. The theatre is also close to a handful of great neighborhood restaurants so grabbing a bite to eat before or getting a cocktail after is easy peasy. Make a night of it! As I mentioned the show was wonderful (still open for two more days--go see it!) and the WSU students who fill the cast are crazy talented. Tickets are typically only 15 bucks and they do about 4 shows per year. As far as I'm concerned you can't ask for a better, more affordable night of consistently good theater in the Detroit area!

Large theatre with balcony as well but beware of the seat -- if you are a tall person, then you might want to seat at the end to get a little more leg room. It's located on the college campus. They feature a lot of classics plays and new stuff as well. It's located in Rochester so the drive from Detroit can be taxing-- it's about 35-40mins. I've seen Little Shops of Horror, a Christmas Carol, Blues in the Night and a couple of others that I can't recall the names. The theater is pretty spacious. It's not the Opera House but it's nice and family friendly. There's also a small art gallery located inside which features some very talented artists that I believe attend or attended the university.

The theatre seats 584 people and the in and out is rather slow but well worth the wait. The Theatre has a no eating or drinking policy to preserve the Theatre's clean and polished atmosphere. The history of the Meadowbrook Theatre is on the walls to your left and right as you walk the hallway to the Theatre. It was very nostalgic reading the Theatre beginning and triumphs. The Meadowbrook Theatre is on the Oakland University Campus which provides ample parking and a short walk to the entrance. The grounds are well kept and clean. I will be coming back to visit and watch more performances this year. The 2022 schedule is up and full of all different shows to choose from. I'll be trying to get my culture on this year and why not you as well.

There is plenty of parking available and several handicap spots. This location has 16 auditoriums. Hot off the presses! They now have VIP seats for extra space and more privacy. The VIP seats are in a private enclosure (black wall partitions). This seating option has heated reclining seats, side tables on both sides perfect for a purse and concessions, coat hooks on both sides and storage space (perfect spot for your umbrella). I love the space, however, they need to wipe down the partitions between showings. Also, Tuesday is a bargain for $5 tickets plus FREE medium popcorn for all registered Premier & Premier Plus reward members. The Premier reward membership is FREE. The Premier Plus reward membership is an annual fee of $14.95 which comes with more perks (birthday, etc.). "Got to go to the show where the good times are (It's more fun at MJR!)
