On the one hand, the park isn't what it used to be. On the other, it still provides valuable…read moreservices to the community. Plus, there are a lot of ducks and geese living there. The park lies along Kishacoquillas Creek and features a one-mile walking/running trail around the perimeter. A large portion of this trail fronts the creek, and it is a beautiful site for a stroll, or to sit on a bench and read. Another main feature are the picnic pavilions. Family reunions, scout groups, church groups, youth sports teams, and many others utilize the pavilions for events. They are simple but serviceable, with grills, water, and picnic tables. The park also houses the Stone Arch Players, a local theater troupe. I can't vouch, but they've been going strong for about twenty years, and people seem to like it. At least they're making an effort to bring some culture, no matter how amateur, to the area. Mini-golf: For $2.25, you can play a round on the boringly simple but surprisingly well maintained 18-hole course. This course was $1 when I was a kid, and aside from paint touchups and new carpets, only three holes have changed since then. Par on the back nine seems high (I shot -5 on the way in this afternoon) but whether you keep score or not, it's always fun. Plus, how can you beat $2.25?! Hundreds of ducks and geese call the park home. I always enjoy watching these birds for some reason. Hey, everybody likes ducks, right?

There are spots with baggies for any of the little doggy messes your best friend may make. There are also public restrooms. My favorite feature of the park is the remains of what use to be a theme park. Here you will find the remains of an old bumper car house, an old stage, and some other remnants of the old Kish park. Growing up in the area, I have many fond summer memories at Kish park. From baseball and reunions to fishing and family walks. In the Christmas season, a local group decorates the park with lights. It makes for a fun walk in the brisk winter air. There are some things that are to be desired in the park. It would be nice to see a revitalized park with rides for the kids. This would be a great place to put one of those community classic style carousels. The park could use a little bit of a facelift as long as they preserve the historical aspect of the old rides. Maybe the mini golf could use an update. Also, maybe it is time to get the old closed up pool ripped out or turn it into a place for local skateboarders to play. All that said, it is a solid place to take the kids on a weekend or to just go and sit down to eat a pizza or subs with the family. I live fairly close to the park and probably don't spend enough time there.

It has all the…read moreconvenience of fairly modern restrooms with the charm of well developed yet semi rustic picnic areas. From the relaxing sounds and breeze from Honey Creek, which runs through the park, to the well constructed wooden bridges that line some of the trails, it is a fun trip for the family. There are camping areas for those that wish to stay the night. Bring the tent, though, as there aren't any cabins and I am unsure if they have camper access at this point. They do have fire rings and grills throughout the park. The real appeal, for me, are the trails. They have a number of them. One that travels along Honey Creek and borders a deer rescue/preserve maintained by a private owner. I once traveled far down the trail, near the deer preserve, only to be surprised by an entire herd of deer wondering near where I was on the other side of the owners fence. It was an experience I will never forget. The park, itself, can be busy in the Summer months. Family reunions are often held, here as is the occasional work picnic. The one negative is that the old swimming pool, which was free to use for the public, has been long closed and torn out. There is little sign of it other than the old refreshment stand and changing house. So, get out in the woods. Pick a trail A few go up into the nearby mountain. There is always a friendly face and decent conversation in the park. Just make sure to bring the bug spray and a jacket in the Spring and Fall. In the Summer, get ready to sweat on those walks. Reeds Gap has pretty much everything--swimming pool, concessions, playground, campsites--but I love it for the picnic areas, hiking, and general woodland setting. We used to come here for low-key Sunday afternoons: just bring the family and some food and set up shop at one of the picnic tables. After lunch, let the kids run around the woods or the playground, or maybe even go swimming. Today I was amazed that the park was nearly empty. I saw two rangers and two campers back towards the far (eastern) end of the park. The pool and concession stand were closed. What gives? It was a Friday. In the old days, there would have been hundreds of people. I took advantage of the peace and quiet. First I sat at a picnic table near Parking Lot B, directly facing Honey Creek. There is almost no better sound on Earth than gently running water in a rocky creek. I enjoyed my lunch and didn't even get out the book that I brought; I just looked and listened. Then I took off down the trail by the creek. At one point I lost the trail and just crossed the creek on some rocks, picking up the red trail, which I took all the way around the loop. I crossed the creek again on a large fallen tree. That was scary but thrilling. The whole excursion was exactly what I needed--some peace and calm while enjoying the outdoors. All I wanted to do was eat lunch, tromp around the woods, stop and read my book, tromp around the woods some more, etc. Perfect afternoon. This park has something for everyone, and all aspects are very well maintained by the DCNR. Kudos to them for their efforts to create and keep a great park.

The website also mentions that they offer an on-lake fuel dock with non-ethanol fuel, fishing and boating supplies, live bait, snacks, drinks, ice, and camping supplies. Like I said: they're here to help you enjoy your time on the water! Reservations aren't required, but are recommended - but also aren't available for each type of boat. I know this because prior to my visit, I learned that canoes and kayaks are first come, first serve. Not a big deal, but still something to be aware of, and admittedly weird since you can reserve a paddle board...just, not canoes or kayaks? When I visited, a relative and I opted to enjoy three hours of kayaking on the water. A few other groups went for the pontoon boats, and we also shared the water with folks who clearly owned their own boats and were using approved launch points to join in the fun. Our visit was pretty straight-forward; we paid, got outfitted with life vests and paddles, and got some help launching ourselves after we asked for it. Coming back in was admittedly less fun since the very busy staff didn't come help to pull in our kayaks; we managed by ourselves but it took a bit of coordination and teamwork since a kayak that's half in, half out of the water isn't particularly stable. We also admittedly dodged some groups of people on land because not every other guest remembered that masks are necessary outdoors in 2020, too; still, the good news about being outside is that it's at least easier to keep your distance. And the staff did mask up at all times, so at least being inside when checking in and out wasn't overly stressful. Boats & Bikes is exactly what it sounds like and I definitely appreciate their set-up, which made it easy to enjoy time on the lake in this beautiful state park. I would definitely come here again and take advantage of the different boat rental options during future visits to the area.

I've come to respect smaller, local mountains like Tussey. No, they aren't going to draw numbers by…read moretheir 500-foot vertical drops, but for a few hours with feet in the bindings, hills such as this are great. Much better to have them nearby than...not skiing! I've always wondered about Tussey after knowing the family who owned it in the '80's- the Aicholtz, or something like that-who went on to own Blue Marsh Ski Area, where I worked for a season. Recent trips to PSU have piqued that interest, and a free Saturday before THON Hoops on Sunday was a no brainer. Kids and dad are skiing! It was a really good day. Let me hit the main points below... Pros: 1. Layout of facility: Parking is close very to lodge and base of hill...two rows away close. Ticket shop and rental shops are well marked. No crazy uphill climbs to get to the lift. Logical layouts, bathrooms accessible. 2. Reasonable Prices: Rentals were $31; noon to 5 lift ticket was $30. Combined, this is cheaper than Elk's lift ticket alone! Rentals were a bit steep, but the cheap lift ticket absorbs it. 3. Terrain: Ok, only 5 runs, granted. However, for 5 runs, one is a beginner (Deer Run), two are great intermediates with wide runs and decent drops (Utah and Tuscarora), and one with decent moguls (Grizzly). Plus, Tuscarora and Utah have cool terrain park elements. Overall, for 5 runs they are varied and interesting. Oh, and a beginner hill...didn't spend time there. Cons: 1. Food: One rather nasty hamburger was consumed ($4) before we purchased the rest of the meals from a vendor outside on the patio outside the lodge...which was really good. Choose this option! 2. Lack of vertical: 500 feet go by quickly, but short lift lines and a quick ride to the top means you're back on your skis quickly! Longest trail is .75 mile. Other: 1. Clientele: Lots of college kids here- no surprise. There was some yahoo-ish-ness from some of the skiers and boarders, typical for a college town. Also some really talented skiers and boarders! 2. Snow: decent conditions for a 40-degree day. Good snow pack, with one bald-spot wearing through. Some ice at the top. 3. Lodge: Definitely smallish, lacking in character...but clean, with some good views. Wife spent most of the day inside with #3 non-skiing son, and was grateful for the wifi. 4. Rental Shop: Small space, cramped, but it does the job. Newer looking skiis. 5. Staff: Call this one neutral; not overtly friendly. Lack of visible ski patrol members; usually, they are busy training and practicing hauling injury dummies down the mountain. Very few present today. Verdict: Locals should be grateful for this hill; it serves a purpose. It offers decent enough skiing without the drive, perfect for a few hours in the afternoon or evening. Odds are we will be back, as it was a perfect venue for our kids to further their skills.
