Light Years - An elegant venue to have your breakfast in solitude.

I was wondering why such a popular spot would be so isolated? But all is well worth the effort to get here. The venue is brimming with natural lighting, classic charm and warmth. For my breakfast, I ordered the Pixelated avocado (on a sourdough toast) because it just looked so darn intriguing. I didn't expect anything else to be honest, and turned out this was GOOD!! Every single element in this dish has complex flavors that compliments each other. The chili dried air kale, diced pixelated avocado and the soft shell crab was especially stunning. The dish certainly performs to its Instagram ability. For my drink, I ordered their matcha latte; it was strong tasting yet smooth. I could drink this all day! The Light Years is certainly not disappointing in any way, from the beautiful venue to the outstanding food, supported with service and ambiance for days. Easily, my favorite brunch spot in town at the moment and much to recommend you :).

Recently opened at the bottom of a new apartment block just along from the Camberwell tram depot, it should not be confused with Lights in the Attic cafe which is a bit further down Camberwell Road. The fit out is the now common scandi/minimalist affair with a smattering of potted greenery. Coffee is from Dukes, but the star of the show here is the food. All the dishes I saw coming out looked great and were good sized portions. I had the bircher and it was a generous serve, looked pretty and tasted even better. Overall a good value and tasty option for brunch/lunch in the leafy inner east.

I must be honest and say I was a bit iffy about going to a milk bar for brunch. I enjoyed the rustic decoration and laid back environment as I sipped on my chai latte that was perfectly made to suit my taste buds as the rest of the group enjoyed their coffees. For grubb we feasted on the homemade sausage roll, middle eastern eggs with bacon and a chicken wrap. Everyone enjoyed their meals and agreed we would come back to visit again. We then trotted off to find some nerf guns to rid us of the tranquility and energy we had gained from the visit to the Milk Bar.

I wasn't in the best headspace when I went in there, rushing between open for inspections I was after a coffee and something to eat (take away) quickly. So I ordered one of their prepared sandwiches with the intention that it should only take a couple of minutes. Sadly I'd finished my coffee before my sandwich was even ready. This is the type of place that you need to be slow. Enjoy the beautiful looking (and tasting) food on offer. Don't do what I did and rush in rush out. Laze over the paper and enjoy your brunch. I'll be back to do just that.

I ordered a long black to start and it was perfection. Code Black coffee I believe. I would have ordered another immediately had I not had an afternoon of more coffee meetings ahead! The menu is fantastic with a great variety of brunch and lunch items to suit all tastes. The granola was so tempting, as was the mouth watering pulled pork and slaw sandwhich that my dining buddy opted for. I went for the Israeli Chicken Salad - very flavoursome and filling - they were not stingy on the chicken. The spot is child-friendly (not just a clever name) and the seating outside was comfortable with plenty of room for the pram. With this and other adorable cafes popping up in this neighbourhood, it's definitely putting Glen Iris on my visit-more list for Melbourne. Sitting amongst the leafy street on a sunny afternoon was relaxing to the max. Loved it.

Being an invite, my friend had a nice introductory chat with the owner first (I just listened on since, again, I was the +1), so we got a feel for what his background was for the cafe, and the mindset and direction he wanted to take it. I was struck by his genuine nature in wanting people to have a nice, quality experience, above all, but also that he communicates with other cafes to try not to offer the same things in order to make it as unique as possible for the customer. We ordered the Scotch Pancakes, Nanban Chicken and the King Truffle. The first thing I tried was the King Truffle, and it was beyond flavorful and well-cooked. The mushrooms were not overdone and were perfectly seasoned, as we even discussed that it was just on the edge of being "too salty," but the ingredients married well together to make that saltiness just right, while the presentation was spot on. The Nanban Chicken was equally well-done, with the chicken being moist and well-seasoned, while the black rice added a nice texture and the chili gave a nice pop to the sweetness. The presentation was fabulous as well. With the Scotch Pancakes, here is where we were a tad disappointed, and especially in being told this dish was a huge favorite. While the presentation delivered perfectly, unfortunately, the execution left us wanting more. We agreed that it wasn't a complete failure, as it still was pleasant enough, but the pancakes were found to be dry and lacking flavor. I would have loved if the syrup/sauce was able to soak up into the pancake, but perhaps it was the thickness of the pancake or the slight over cooked surface; however, we felt we were biting into dry dough and there wasn't enough on top to add the flavor we needed to get through it. The mascarpone on top was flavorful and definitely helped to add what was missing, but it was still lacking, and perhaps even adding more berries could do this dish justice. Nonetheless, I am quick to say that perhaps this dish simply had an "off moment," as you don't become a fan favorite and remain as one of the few items to go unchanged from the cafe's inception without good reviews. I would definitely try this again for a second chance, however, the first two dishes made up for where this one lacked, and given that, again, I think this was simply an off moment. Can't be perfect all the time, after all!! If you are looking for a great brunch stop, I would definitely recommend this place, and do try the pancakes even, as we might have simply missed out this day. This rating should read more as 4.5 than simply a 4. Well done, overall.

So why is this place so fantastic? Firstly, the staff here are lovely. Recently, I booked a table of 11 for a Sunday morning and they couldn't have been more pleasant or accommodating! They're happy to chat coffee tasting notes with you and they're genuinely keen to hear what you thought. I found they're constantly going exceeded your expectations, by remembering a detail from the last time you were in. The staff are also keen on social media, especially Instagram, which I believe reinforces how interested the staff are in what their customers think. Secondly, the food is A+. From the classics to the combinations (think hotcakes crossed with a doughnut), everything's been delicious. I like that the menu is broken up into meals and a something light page, so you have a reasonable idea of portion sizing when ordering. Thirdly, these boys (I'm yet to see a girl working?) know what they're doing with the coffee beans. Choosing between pourovers, single origin coffees and cold drips... My guess is you're going to be satisfied no matter what you order! Talk to the staff, let them know what you likely and they're more than happy to make a recommendation. Workshop has given the Glen Huntley area a much needed spark. It's conveniently located (almost) next to the station, which I imagine the train commuters are loving. The fit out is gorgeous, with lots of exposed brick, natural sunlight and some gorgeous lights. One last thing - cutest logo I've seen, go and see for yourself!
