The first of three fjord in New Zealand our cruise boat visited on a wet Thursday mid-morning (07:15 - 09:45), Milford Sound had some great sights we saw from the indoor buffet area. We were able to get a nice table for two right next to the large observation windows, earlier. By the time we exited, the area was completely occupied and as soon as we were leaving, our table was snatched up, in preparation for the next fjord at 12:15.
A fjord is a long, deep sea inlet with steep rocky cliffs on both sides. Per our Day 4 newsletter: "Mountains and waterfalls abound in Milford Sound, one of the New Zealand's top attractions. ... , the sound (technically a fjord) is part of Fjorldland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site". A sound is a large sea inlet, deeper than a bight and wider than a fjord.
It is named after Milford Haven, an area in SW Wales. read more
