We had a super fun day with our guide Ben from the Trips and Tramp travel company. He picked us up in a small van in Te Anau and drove us to Milford Sound. From there we started our day with a 5.5 km walk along the famous Milford Track to Giant Gate Falls, then back (11km total walking). Many visitors to NZ will head down to Te Anau, the main resort for trips to Milford Sound. There are plenty of operators ready to take your cash and show you this amazing piece of landscape. But the best way to do it is with Trips and Tramps. Priding themselves on small excursions, you'll be in a minibus with no more than 8-10 people (most other trips are by the coach load). They pride themselves on putting something back into the community so see if you can get on the postie tour - which also doubles us as, you've guessed it, the local post run. This gives you a good idea of how people live out here, one of the remotest places on earth - many are farmers. It's a long drive to the dock where you catch a boat that cruises through the sound and out to sea, then turning back. You'll see lots of wildlife (penguins, seals, dolphins), amazing scenery and waterfalls. Our guide was knowledgeable and flexible. We all had great fun and had a great day. read more
