These people are true craftsmen and are highly experienced in a craft that just isn't practiced as widely today as it once was. I went though a stage a few years back when I bought several old chairs and a sofa from antique shops and had them reupholstered by the guys from St Morris. The chairs and sofa were in an awful state with springs sticking out of the seats and they just weren't usable as they were. They were however stunning old pieces of furniture that simply needed a lot of TLC. After what must have been a great deal of hard work from the guys at St Morris, I ended up with the most stunning sofa covered in a pale blue fabric and two cream chairs and I still have them. One chair is in my bedroom and the other in the office. The reupholster and restoration process wasn't cheap but I really did end up with true investment pieces of furniture that have lasted for years. I know the same people are still running St Morris Upholsterers because I have referred friends to them over the years and everyone has been equally happy with the work done. Go and visit them in their store on Magill Road. You can take your old piece of furniture in for a makeover or they have some stock that's already restored and waiting for a new home. Like I said, their work isn't cheap but it's certainly worth it and you won't regret the money you spend in the long run.

I felt comfortable as soon as I entered. This isn't a big glossy store with salespeople out the front and workman hidden out the back. It's a small space with three staff working behind a glass petition and a few pieces on sale in the display cabinets. I had a number of pieces but ended up only getting two pieces repaired this time - I had a battery replaced and links taken out of my grandma's Rado watch and a fine gold bracelet soldered. $35 all up and I got a text a week later saying they were ready for collection. They talked me through why some pieces weren't worth repairing unless they had sentimental value (labour far repair far exceeded value of piece). I'm holding onto those until I have extra funds. If the owner has the time, energy or inclination to do this, then wow, and I'd like my commission of a coffee each time I visit thank you. I really hope Acacia Arts doesn't end up the same way Lola's Flowers did across the road, retirement or worse is a horrible thing to have to deal with! Yes, they have a collection of accessories and crafts, but what really got me all geeky was the books! Oh, secondhand bookstores, how I love thee! Increasingly rare, a store devoted purely to old and out of print books is a treasure trove of amazingness. Not only are the titles sure to be either niche, classic or rare (or all three), the prices are usually great and the physical act of browsing books in search of a new gem for the bookshelf is a delight. The smell of old books permeates Acacia in a welcoming way, and there are stacks and stacks of books to keep you browsing. From Tolstoy to lurid paperback novels from the '50s, there's bound to be something for book geeks in here, and the staff are also lovely and helpful.

After I assured him I wasn't actually Italian (if he was disappointed he didn't show it), he was equally as enthusiastic and chatty in English. He's a charmer. A small (the shop is super tiny), family run business, I have the feeling it's been here forever, and they know their stuff. I've taken several pairs of shoes in for resoling or mending, and have always been happy with the results. They always get a polish included too, so they come back to you as good as new. They also sell leather goods and do all the usual key cutting and engraving as well, though my expertise is limited to shoe repairs. Just a tip: they don't take cards of any kind (Eftpos included) so you'll need to pay cash. Keepin' it real.

As could be expected, there is a detergent dispenser in the corner which charges about 20c a hit. You wait and wait, put more coins in, and when you leave your sheets and towels still aren't entirely dry. If it wasn't for the interesting creatures you get to see in there I would probably try to dry my stuff at home with a hair-dryer. Firle Super Laundrette is conveniently located in Firle Plaza, so you can at least combine it with going to the supermarket. Overall I've always been satisfied with this place because I never had to wait for a dryer and they have a coin machine, which I need about 99% of the time I go to a laundrette. In terms of price and service I guess it's like everywhere else. Around $2 for 8 minutes in the dryer and you'll probably have to use it twice, maybe 3 times depending on what and how much you put in it. One time there seemed to be a problem with their machines and all the dryers (including stuff that came out of them) smelled of gas. Not very nice. But it seems that it was a one-off problem, so 4 stars for Firle Super Laundrette with their coin machine.
