I just had the best home-grilled steak in my life and I got it from Mike's. Their service was very fast, and it was a busy Saturday afternoon. I bought 4 burgers (2 jalapeño cheddar and 2 bacon cheddar) and 2 top sirloin steaks. Even the fat was good in these steaks and melted in your mouth like butter. I can't wait to make the burgers. If I ever need a really nice beef, ham, or turkey for a special dinner, this is the place I go to. Not only is the quality amazing, but so is the customer service. Last year I did a ribeye roast for Christmas dinner and needed the rib removed but on the side - no problem! That ribeye roast was also absolutely BRILLIANT. they also do their own smoking in-house, so their hams are especially amazing. Their prices are a bit higher than the mainstream grocery store, but not by much, and you're also getting significantly better quality. They also offer a really nice selection of frozen foods, jarred sauces and jams, cheeses, etc. And dog bones! I haven't gotten one of their meat sticks but I might have to the next time I go in (which might be very soon as I've been craving that ribeye roast again). I have driven by this place hundreds of times so THANK YOU Sam W and a few fellow yelpers who are also part of the WSP Facebook group for mentioning this place the other day. Naturally, I had to take my snoopy ARS in to check it out since everyone raved about the beef sticks and jerky. What I tried- Beef Sticks-Wonderful! I had to chomp into one immediately when I got in my car!! Chicken Jerky-Almost tastes like smoked salmon but in chicken form. Its not your typical thin jerky but Man Oh Man, is that stuff tasty!!!! Roast Beef Sandwich-Reminds me of the Roast Beef my Mom used to make and they pile it on! 4 Bucks people!!! I actually ate mine the next day so I am sure if you get it hot from them, its even better if that's possible! The Famous Smoked Bacon-I have not tried this yet. It is still in my fridge waiting to be cooked but I am sure its as good as everyone says! Pig Ear-I could not forget my pooch Teddi! He loved his Pig Ear! He usually plays around with them, eats some, then leaves it but not this Pig Ear. He ate the whole thing in one sitting! Can it be possible that these are the premiere Pig Ears? Is there a difference in Pig Ears? Maybe they smoke them better... Service-A++++++++..Could these guys be any nicer??? NOPE....They put up with me asking all kinds of questions about everything and I felt so happy when I left! Mike's Butcher Shop is my go-to place for fresh bone-in steaks and chops, sausages and meat sticks, cold cuts, cheese, and assorted other butcher shop items. For many people, when it comes to bratwurst, they think of Johnsonville brats. I don't care for Johnsonville brats because I find them to be dry, salty and tough. I greatly prefer the bratwurst from Mike's Butcher Shop. Their bratwurst are flavorful, juicy, and tender. Put their bratwurst in one of their fresh-baked hotdog buns and you have a match made in heaven! Another favorite of mine at Mike's Butcher Shop are the bone-in steaks, in particular, the porterhouse. This lovely cut of meat is a tenderloin and New York strip married to a large T-bone. The bone adds a lot of flavor to those two cuts of meat. In addition to beef steaks, Mike's Butcher Shop has pork chops and, on occasion, lamb chops. The staff at Mike's Butcher Shop are friendly and helpful. It can get busy at the shop on Saturday's so keep that in mind. Also, it is not always apparent that the staff are working on an orders for others, so, if it appears you are being ignored, a polite "Is there anyone who can assist me?" will clear things up. read more

Great meat quality. The cashier was also hilarious. I don't know where they source their beef, but the tenderness and flavor are fantastic. The fat was very buttery as well. I tried a porterhouse and t-bone and will certainly be back. I also think that it's an excellent value proposition. I've had similar cuts from very high end grocery stores and they simply don't compare. If you're looking for age in the flavor profile this may not be what you're looking for. Driving down Robert St. I spot the word Butcher out of the corner of my eye. I almost forgot about this place. Sam is right about the amazing smell. I wasn't interested in the meat that day as much as the accessories. I was hosting the fountain pen club snacks, and in a fridge are spreads from North Country Gourmet. The onion and garlic had an orange cheese color and was delicious. However, the swiss almond never made it out of the house. I also grabbed a Helms Sugar Shack pure maple syrup out of Barron, WI. Went in the other day to get some ground pork for my husbands favorite Romanian dish, sarmale. We accidentally got two pounds of pork and one pound of pork sausage meat, which ended up a happy accident as they were the BEST sarma I have ever made. We also picked up a pound of their stellar bacon. I have been dreaming about this bacon since the last time we had it, which was TWO YEARS ago. My husband says to the butcher "oh mah....I love your bacon, I missed it." Butcher says "yea....I know." But really, they can afford to be a little smug about it, because really it's amazing. The smell of smoked meats is just saturated into the walls and it's SO heavenly. They also have smoked sausages for snacking, and killer sandwiches. read more

I'm not a fan of their beef jerky. It has an almost ham-like flavor that is off-putting to me. But their chicken jerky is kickass. It's well-seasoned and substantial and the beef sticks are equally delicious. They carry some specialty frozen meats (they have lobster tail meat for extremely cheap) and they carry a ton of spices and seasonings. The butchers really seem to care about what they do and will do special cuts. One of my friends that lives in Virginia came up here a couple years ago and fell in love with the beef jerky. He still talks about it to this day so I make it a point to send him a pound every now and again. I asked the butcher if he could vacuum seal it for me for the trip; he did so without question and said the product would be just fine in transit this way. That's really good customer service, in my opinion. This is one of the gems of West Saint Paul that, sadly, I don't think people are utilizing nearly enough. If you're used to getting your meats at the grocery store, give your local butchers a chance. You might find that the quality of the product you're receiving is far and beyond what you'd otherwise get. read more

I loved this place for so many years. Sadly, there seems to have been a shift lately, mostly in staff. My wife stopped in yesterday and had a terrible experience. Staff was just plain rude. Last time that happens. Everyone used to be so nice and helpful here. Doesn't seem to be the focus anymore. Sad. Best darn brats in town too. Have lived in WSP for 10 years and just recently started going to Mike's (don't know what took so long). Got some steaks and jerkey. The filets we got were the most tender cuts of meat I've ever purchased from anywhere. The jerkey was a big hit with the family as well and the service was friendly and great. Love this butcher shop. The chicken and turkey jerky are made from full cutlets and is incredible but their beef sticks are pretty great too. They don't have the widest variety in flavors for say bratwurst but I feel the quality is much better than some places that have 30 flavors of brats and that's apparent whenever I decide to go to Hyvee or another butcher shop. I feel the ground beef has better flavor too and they have the best burger buns to go with it that they bake in house (seriously don't leave without hd or burger buns!). The Smoked meat smell wafting out of the smokers had my mouth watering. Our steaks were wonderful, tender, juicy and flavorful. While we were picking out our steaks, we over heard several people ordering the turkey and chicken jerky, so we got some and Wow! This is great! Major disappointment on this trip to the butcher shop. Usually, their beef jerky is among the best in the Twin Cities, but today, the entire batch was dark, hard, dry, and obviously way overcooked. Disappointing, because it cost $20 a pound and I drove all the way from the east side of St. Paul in hopes of a treat. I went home empty-handed, not willing to pay 20 bucks a pound for meat that is so far below their usual standard. Sadly, I have noticed a trend at Mike's. Just a couple years ago, their consistently good jerky was a favorite in our household. But the last couple visits have seen a real drop in the consistency, and this last visit was a complete disaster. Not sure when I'll muster up the courage to go back. In fairness, the kid behind the counter did dig through their batch to try to find me the softest pieces, but what ended up in the bag was not something I wanted to buy. Also in fairness, I'm only talking about their beef jerky. I'm sure there are other products are just fine. read more

The staff are always friendly and attentive in an old-school way that drips with sincerity; all virtues from a by-gone era when service was KING. Now, onto the food, which is THE reason for this review. Try to imagine getting two, beautifully hand-cut NY strip steaks for only $16, while eating at a restaurant. I'm drooling at the prospect of the grilling we're going to tackle tonight, thanks to Mike's. The jerky variety is solid and the actual offerings are delicious. They even have a new Buffalo/Blue Chz combo. Best part? The hot, freshly prepared roast beef sandwich. For only $5 you can buy the VERY BEST roast beef sammy you will ever eat. It's pulled vs. sliced, and I'm literally savoring it as I type this review. In today's era of "big box" grocers and retailers squeezing the local mom-and-pops out of business, the need to support a merchant like Mike's is all the more crucial. Great products--great jerky, steaks, meats in general. Sadly mitigated by the fact the people behind the counter are surly and arrogant at best--downright borderline nasty and unhelpful at worst. If you want a special cut or something not right out of the case in front, you will have to explain repeatedly, while they essentially sneer condescendingly at you (in person or over the phone.) My little 80 yo Auntie very kindly gives me a gift card to this place every year. I will use it one last time this year, then ask her not to give me a card to this place again. I've had it with them.
