Absolutely amateur barbershop. Head barber cannot listen to instructions. No technique. Horrible service. Let me preface by saying that I used to cut men's hair, so I prefer to use the proper vocabulary when instructing a barber what I want in a haircut. Instructions given to Mike (head barber) were mid skin fade on the sides and back. This means the shortest length of the fade is a zero-guard (0 inch) and longest length of the fade was instructed to be a five-guard (5/8th inch). This barber shop does not even own a foil shaver, which is the proper tool to get a close zero-guard cut. The head barber also ignored my instruction of 5/8th inch at the top of the fade and proceeded to take it all the way down to 1/4th of an inch. While fading, the man didn't even use a guideline to cut my hair... he just freehanded everything which leads to an uneven cut!! He also does not know how the clipper-over-comb method to cater to longer fade hair lengths. This shows the complete lack of skill needed to even be a competent barber. I then instructed him that my current hairstyle is a combover, and I'd like 1 inch off the top of my head everywhere, evenly. He proceeded to not even touch the back and top area of my head. Brother then cut off more than an inch off the FRONT of my head only and did so in one straight scissor snip. Now it looks like I have a bowl cut. Completely absurd. Bowl cuts are what you see people from SuperCuts give to 8 year olds... crazy that this guy claims to be cutting hair for 26 years but only knows how to do this. On top of the complete amateur skillset demonstrated, I had an appointment scheduled for 3PM. I show up at 2:55PM. The guy isn't even there. I had to get one of his female co-barbers to text him to show up. The guy shows up at 3:15PM with a coffee in hand. Points to me and asks, "you with me?" No apology for being late or anything. Advertised time slot for a men's haircut is 30 minutes. I sit down at 3:15PM and he says he's done at 3:30PM. What a clown. There needs to be an option to leave a 0 star review for places that truly deserve it - like Mike's Barbershop. Avoid this place like the plague. Go to Nassau Barbers or University Barber. They're both in downtown Princeton, cheaper, and won't sheer your hair off like you're a sheep. Oh yeah, these guys are stuck in the 1990's too because they only accept cash. Pretty good professional cuts here. Had cuts from Mike and an associate here over the course of the past few months. Always professional and complete in a timely manner. Conversations are good and friendly. They listen to what you want and have been able to comply with what I've asked for. Sometimes the wait can be long if only one barber is in office. Generally in the mornings it can be a little longer of a wait. Street metered parking can be a bit of a pain. It's not hard to find it off the main drag, it just depends on how far you want to walk. I'm fifteen minutes into my haircut on a Sunday afternoon, right before closing, when Mike and some of his friends come back into the store. Five or so of them, none of them wearing masks. They're so drunk that Mike is slipping on the hair that's on the floor. One of them, the man getting his hair cut, is shouting, "Trump! Trump! Trump! Trump!" He reacts with disgust when the TV turns on to CNN, demanding the channel be changed away from "fake news". They proceed to shout and aspirate all over the small space, play U2, and when the music changes, demand "none of those sensitive songs." This is my first haircut at a barbershop since I started practicing isolation in March. I wish I'd continued cutting my own hair. COVID is real. The people dying from it are real. I believe you disrespect them and you disrespect your fellow Americans when you conduct business in this way. What might have been fun pre-pandemic has to adjust now, your inconveniences be damned. My last two visits have been bad experience. The first barber left hair too long and unevenly cut. The second time I booked an appointment, but the barber (a different one) clearly had just taken another client 1 min before my appt.time (I was 3 min early), so I had to wait for half an hour until that client was done. Mike's Barber Shop is a down-to-Earth barber shop in the heart of Princeton's downtown. Every time that I have been there, there was a short wait (three to five people ahead of me), and customers were taken on a first come, first served basis. There are a few sofas and chairs in the waiting area. Coffee and donoughts are there to enjoy while waiting. In the afternoon, I have even been offered a beer. Mike is awesome and a very skilled barber. I have found the other barbers to be capable as well. I have never left disappointed with a haircut or the experience. Wow Mike's is awesome. Old-school barber shop. Great music playing in the background. Super comfortable couches for waiting. Real neighborhood feel, as people pop in the shop to say hi. You can tell Mike is a really cool, good guy. Don't go anywhere else in Princeton. It's $20 at the two other shops in town, and $25 at Mike's (for students), but it's more than worth it. Great place! I needed a quick clean up and sat in Olivia's chair - I highly recommend her! The shop had the World Cup on the tv and while I was nervous I would sit in the chair and be unable to watch, I was all set up with a screen right in front of me. I came in just two days before Christmas and the atmosphere was certainly festive as Mike had set up an open bar. There were a number of folks who seemed to have come in just for the social environment. The wait was a bit long with just Mike and two other employees working that afternoon. The person who cut my hair was friendly but not the most skilled barber I have had before; the short hair work was fine but when it came to shaping the top (which is longer), there was a lack of skill. The general feel of the place was a bit dirty with noticeable wear to furniture and corners where hair seemed to have collected over the years. The price was a little high, but I got a decent hair cut. I don't think I'd come back to this location. The other barbers in the area charge the same rate, but they have added value like comfortable waiting rooms, quality instruments, or comfortable chairs. This place is kind of buried with other businesses. Its crazy dark in there... If you walk in from the outside consider bringing a flashlight. As you enter, and make your way through the narrow corridor, you'll see a row of chairs with the waiting area just to the left. The lights hanging from the ceilings over the chairs is the only light in the shop, so the waiting area is in the dark. The place is nice and clean. There's TVs to watch and also there was coffee while you waited. Overall my haircut was great, especially for someone that's never seen me before. The only thing that knocked it down a star was my sideburns weren't even. Which in reality I wish I could only knock down a half star because I was able to fix it when I got home, but they don't let you do that. I will definitely go back next time I'm in town! When you walk into this welcoming, laid back barber shop you are greeted with donuts and an espresso. For me, that just rocked! There were only two barbers and a few people waiting when i arrived. I was most amazed by how they treated each person as though they were the only person in the shop. Somehow with this level of attentiveness, they still moved swiftly and kept the wait time reasonable. Most importantly, they did a great job on my noble and partially balding crown.
