I buy a new vehicle about every 3-4 years, and I can confidently say I have NEVER dealt with this much nonsense from a dealership. Negotiations are one thing. What has happened during AND after this sale is on another level.
We went to Mike Shaw Kia in Corpus Christi looking at a 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid X-Line SX Prestige AWD with an MSRP of around $60,000. I was trading my 2024 Telluride SX Prestige X-Line in excellent condition with roughly 32,000 miles and had about $12,000-$13,000 in negative equity.
I knew exactly what I was walking in with. I wasn't expecting them to make $13,000 in negative equity magically disappear, and I wasn't expecting some unrealistic deal. I also already had my own financing, so there was one less thing for them to deal with.
Their initial numbers came back around $79,000 OTD.
I told them immediately that wasn't happening and that I needed to be closer to $70,000.
Almost instantly, they came back at around $75,000.
So somehow roughly $4,000 disappeared almost immediately just because I said no.
That was my first red flag.
If you can suddenly find $4,000 within minutes, what was the original $79,000 number? Were you just hoping I wouldn't question it?
With a roughly $60,000 MSRP and $12,000-$13,000 in negative equity, I felt $72,500 OTD on the hybrid we actually came there to buy would have been a very reasonable deal. I wasn't asking for $10,000 off MSRP. I wasn't pretending my negative equity didn't exist. I was trying to make a reasonable deal based on actual numbers.
Instead, $72,500 was discussed on a NON-HYBRID.
That made the whole negotiation even more aggravating. We came in looking at the hybrid, and rather than getting that vehicle to a reasonable number, the conversation shifted to a less expensive version to make the OTD number look better.
Eventually, after all the back-and-forth, we finally got a deal done.
At that point, I figured: Whatever. Negotiations are over. We bought the vehicle. Time to move on.
The negotiation was aggravating, but what happened afterward is what really earned this review.
After the deal was completed:
They forgot to have us sign the check.
Weeks later, they contacted me because they needed my loan payoff account number.
Then they contacted me AGAIN because they somehow put the WRONG AMOUNT on the check, and now I have to get another check issued.
How does a dealership handling transactions worth tens of thousands of dollars repeatedly screw up basic paperwork like this?
And their compensation for weeks of inconvenience and fixing THEIR mistakes?
A $40 tank of gas.
Seriously?
I've bought plenty of vehicles and understand mistakes happen, but this isn't one mistake--it's one thing after another. I shouldn't still be dealing with financing and paperwork weeks after driving the vehicle home.
If you buy from Mike Shaw Kia, double-check every number, payoff, check and signature yourself before leaving. Apparently, being handed the keys doesn't mean the deal is actually finished.
They got this sale, but they absolutely won't get my next one.
If I could 0 star this I would. read more
