I booked lash extensions and a luxury manicure online, received the confirmation. Lashes were first. Billie took her time carefully placing them. It was my first time having them and I was expecting a long appointment of about two hours, which it was. The lashes looked clumpy and synthetic, with more along the inner corner than outer which made my eyes look wonky. She asked if it was ok and I said yes. At that point it was already the afternoon and I didn't want to spend several more hours trying to make it right when I was expecting a better service the first round. The manicure came next. The lighting in the nail area is so poor to be honest I wonder if she could really even see what she was doing. She launched right into filing. Roughly. I asked for rounded edges and my nails were filed down almost completely straight across and looked incredibly stubby. Then she took even more length off when I requested she please round them off some more. I was expecting cuticle care first and a hand massage at some point, and the tools for it were out. I asked if I was getting cuticle care when she began to put the gel polish on and she said yes. Ok. Polish came out lumpy and streaky and there were bubbles that I asked to be fixed as well. The application was not good and the polish was cured for a very short time. After the polish was done she dabbed a little cuticle oil and said we were done. I mentioned the email I got confirming the "luxury manicure" option I was confirmed for and she said because the lashes took so long there wasn't time for it. We went around in circles for a few minutes with me saying of that was the case, something would've been mentioned earlier, since this was not the service I booked. When she looked at me blankly and said I did receive a service, I explained it's akin to booking a full leg wax and only getting your thighs waxed. She refused to even acknowledge there was an error on part of the booking system, even after I repeatedly showed her the confirmation email I got. I walked out feeling like I completely wasted £100 and an afternoon. I followed directions for my lashes, hoping I'd get used to them. Within 2 days nearly all of them shed, despite being careful about no water or oil touching my face. I avoided sleeping on my face. They looked so terrible and patchy 48 hours later I used oil to remove the remaining ones. I don't even want to post a photo because it's too embarrassing. The gel polish mostly peeled off 3 days later. If you care to look throught my other reviews for personal care services it's pretty clear I give the benefit of the doubt nearly always. But the combination of unpleasantness was too much here. I don't know how their waxing is, but don't waste your time or money coming to get your lashes or nails done here.

The well groomed receptionist and beauticians weren't as aloof as those in other salon despite and my waxer chatted to me all the way through as though we were old friends. The treatment itself was fantastic as the woman explained they use hot wax that they rip off rather than using cloth strips. This makes for a cleaner, easier and (marginally) less painful wax that lasted longer than others I have had. This is a more expensive place than I would usually go but worth it as it was a top quality job. They do give a student discount but I would say this is a place for the people of Edinburgh who have more disposable income than the average student. My plan is to ask for Zen gift vouchers at Christmas and head back for the pomegranate facial!

SBL is owned and operated by Iram - who is great! So great in fact, I go about twice a month! (Iram used to work for a very popular/well known West End beauty boutique but decided to open her own business.) I regularly get my eyebrows threaded, manicures (shellac), and waxing done by Iram. For waxing (especially intimate waxing) - Iram is the best. She is so quick, makes it pain free, and is a perfectionist. She is also really keen to help you get into a routine to prevent any ingrown hairs and provides really good info on what to do at home and between treatments. My shallac manicures last at least two weeks and they rarely chip. (I usually get bored with the colour and get my manicure removed because my nails grow quickly!) I have been getting my eyebrows threaded for about 10 years and am super picky. Iram knows what is good for your face and adjusts the threading treatment appropriately. Iram also specialises in other beauty treatments, such as: eyelash extensions, eyelash tinting, make up application and spray on tans. One of things I really like is that SBL is text you receive a text a day before your treatment, which is a great reminder. I highly recommend Iram! (Just hope she doesn't get too busy now!)

However, where you go to get treatments like waxing, massages and fake tans is not a separate room; it is just separated from the main room by a curtain. Talking about paper pants, they weren't offered as standard and I had to ask specifically for them. Exfoliation: this felt about as comfortable and relaxing as a smear test. Fake tan: my resulting black feet were blamed on my 'dry skin'. Apart from being slightly dry around the heels, my feet are no dryer than your average feet. My black feet were due to standing in the tanning tent on what can only be described as white pedal bin liners that moved and became displaced each time I had to change tanning position. They do gelllish manicures here, which are beautiful and long-lasting but a real pain to remove since I found it takes a lot of time and effort to remove it yourself. I really liked their eyebrow threading which is only £6 - the cheapest I've seen in Edinburgh and they do a good job! I'd give the manicure and eyebrow threading four stars, but the massage was a two-star since it wasn't very good and I think they are completely overpriced (£55 for 60 minutes). Overall, the place is clean and comfortable and well-presented, and the staff are friendly enough. I'd definitely recommend the eyebrow threading!
