The coffee is great (as the name suggests)...a little on the milder side from my perspective but this allows me to justify stopping for more than one. I also quite like the flavoured syrups to jazz up a latte although this can make the drinks quite expensive....luckily they have a loyalty card! The staff are pleasant enough (some better than others as you might expect) and they were helpful in bringing my coffee over to me when I was on crutches without me needing to ask. It's quite small inside with limited room at the end of the counter to collect your drinks and so a queue can form pretty quickly. This means it can also be a little noisy which is a shame given the tranquillity of the surroundings. I haven't sampled the food here yet but the cake selection grabs my attention each time...definitely one to try in the future.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying it. As an American it was great to see stacks of pancakes for breakfast. I orders a hot chocolate it came with a mound of cream in a large cup though was a regular. The vibe is chill but also fun with oldies playing on the record player in the background. There are piles of records to choose from including new ones. An overall nice place to chill, relax and have fun.

I personally ordered a latte with almond milk, the avocado on sourdough(Mexican) with an added 2 poached eggs. After breakfast/lunch I went back and got a pour over(filtered?) coffee that was out of this world delicious with no milk! I just love when you can get a coffee and enjoy it for the simple pure taste of it. I would order it every time. I also stayed hydrated with the water they generously provide at the front(that they never let run out). The bonus to it all was the dark chocolate selection they have. I went for the 100% dark of single origin, just like their coffees by the way. On top of all that, the bathrooms were clean and well stocked. There were plenty of tables and even some with outlets. There were lots of pastries to choose from that I did not try, but that is what subsequent visits are made for! The staff were really friendly and nice. Someone is obviously on top of it here in organization. It is not easy to make a business look and run this good. So do yourself a favor and go try this place out.

And not many people seem to know about it, also amazing for Starbucks. In terms of seating, there is a high counter in the middle with 4 seats, and a long bench on either side. Even though it is small, it is decorated nicely and is very cosy. The staff who work here are very polite and never seem rushed because of how quiet it always is. The only downside of this place, is since it is such a small store, they don't get delivered all of the syrups and powders needed to create drinks like the Shaken Iced Teas which is a bit of a bummer, as this range is my favourite. The toilets are in the lobby of the Malmaison and are decorated very art-deco style with huge mirrors and old fashioned taps. Apart from the issue of it being badly stocked, it provides a nice escape from the busy Quayside. And there are even a few tables outside if you want to do some people watching and catch some rays.

I'll point out that the Seaton Delaval ice cream place is known as Wriggis and has been run for generations by the same Italian family. Risis Ices is celebrating the company's 110th anniversary this year (2008) and it has been there since before the Tyne bridge was built. An Italian family started the business and still keep it running today. The ice cream on offer is all homemade and there are too many different flavours to choose from. There are traditional Italian ones like zuppa inglese to seasonal flavours such as Christmas pudding. Hot and cold drinks can be bought and there are plenty of cones and wafers. I usually go mad and get a glass filled colourful combo with the craziest colours and flavours topped with sprinklys and sauce. Don't even think about ordering vanilla because that would just make you look boring and dull. On a nice day you can take out and stroll along the picturesque quayside, or just sit on the window stools and chill. Simply the best ice cream ever!
