Over the past year or so it has plummeted in standard and shot up in price, (the elderly and young were the staple clientele of McEvoys). Why did they have to change it? I'm a great believer in 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' if you had a sick older relative in hospital...get them something in McEvoys, a child ready for school...get them kitted in McEvoys..a nice new pair of big women's pants...go to McEvoys. Now they seem to have tried to move upmarket and more 'fashion' based, basically just like all the other department stores around. McEvoys, go back to your roots, big pants, thermal vests, fleece nighties, fat men's pyjamas, terry tea towels, knitting needles, wool, stuff for turning up hems, bed socks, thick welly socks, flat caps and cheap and functional baby clothes. Basically the stuff that is far too un trendy to be in most other places but essential to the older person. Granny will pay a small fortune to have a decent pair of knickers that will come up past the waist band of her skirt you know. And you can never have too many thermal vests. Go back to where you were 10 years ago it will be much better!

The clothing range has always been a bit banal although of a decent enough quality and well-priced. Although recently I've felt that the prices have started to creep up without a rise in the general level of quality or overall style. I'm not really sure who is buying the food as I've always found that despite being quite big it doesn't really feel like the sort of shop you go to do your 'big shop'. Rather it somehow comes across a bit more like an oversized convenience store. The prices are a little higher than I think many would expect to pay too. Usually when you shop 'convenience' you're just getting a few things and you know you're paying a little more as the shop is handy, but here isn't really handy unless you already happen to live right beside it anyway. The finishing is a bit dull too, well maybe not dull.... Dated. All in all its just not that much fun to go into and really the other big Dunnes Store in Forestside makes this one look like the poor cousin.

The handbags are also very highly priced and personally not even that nice. I know that taste is subjective but price isn't and who can afford to pay £150 for a handbag in this climate? A lot of the brands they stock can be found cheaper in TKMaxx therefore if I want an unusual pair of Rocket dogs, for example, I might go there first. They also sell jewelry, which is also priced rather highly at some pieces costing £50 and not really looking like they should. They do stock Fit Flops which is a good find as I struggled to find them anywhere else in the town. I notice they have just bought in EMU brand boots too, which I quite like but can also be found for a cheaper price in TKMaxx (if you are lucky!) One last thing, if a pair of shoes costs £99 one day then £89 the next does that mean they deserve to no longer sit nicely in a little area of their own but have to now lay in among all the other shoes in what frankly I would refer to as a heap? So many shoe shops stock shoes which only appeal to a certain generation, so its extremely refreshing to find such a fab range in Moda, and the shoes really are generally very nice. Having popped in to take a peak at the sale a couple of days ago, I was delighted to discover huge discounts on nearly all shoes, and attempted to dive in and find a few bargains. Unfortunately, three ladies and a buggy were in my way and would not move. Nope, not even an inch. For a good ten minutes, I hovered, I coughed, I dodged...and still the chin-wagging continued. No movement, but plenty of chat. Grrr, frustration. No shoes bargains to be had, unfortunately, although that was quite possibly for the better. I'll be back!

Well, that happened me upon entering Graham's yesterday. No, it wasn't the euphoria of entering a newsagents-cum-ice-cream-parlour (which is perfectly plausible), nor was it the wide selection of magazines that Graham's offered. Nope, it was all down to a tiny little piece of paper. Upon picking up my nameless weekly magazine, I had suddenly remembered that I had cut out a coupon from last week's copy, allowing me to purchase it for 85p instead of £1.50. Hoking though my bag, and then digging through the receipts, bus tickets and cards in my purse, I realised that I had indeed brought the coupon with me. I was extremely grateful they accepted it, because not a lot of the independent stores do, but there wasn't any problems at all. Magazine = bargainously purchased. Yipppeeee. My brother tells me that Graham's is owned and run by a local family from around the Rathfriland area, and they make their own ice-cream which is pretty cool (well, hopefully really cold, but you know what I mean). I didn't get a chance to taste their ice-cream (my stomach still hadn't gotten over lunch), but I would definitely love to go back another time and try it out. Graham's will forever be engraved in my mind as the place where I got my magazine for almost half-price, and will therefore be close to my heart. Always and forever...
