During the tour, we got to see an active, working winery... From the fermentation to aging to bottling, which they were doing as we visited. We also got to see the wine cemetery and the barrel cooperage areas. The end of tasting was well balanced with a white, young red and a Crianza. We also, tried a Grand Reserva Vino Tinto afterwards in the tasting room. Well worth the $ for the tour, plan on 2-2 1/2 hours.

And considering that we just found the wine too average and quite light on the palate without any long-lasting flavours. But the setting is really nice, staff helpful and friendly. They have been doing it longer than…read moremost, doing it as a family, doing it with much longer aging in the oak barrels than any other winery in Haro and it results in fabulous wines. This family-owned winery makes highly individual wines in a style essentially unchanged since its inception in 1877. They grow all their grapes using organic methods, ferment using only natural yeasts and do not filter their wines. They employ four full-time coopers to make their barrels. Gravonia, Tondonia, Bosconia and Cubillo are all individual vineyards which have been in the family for generations. Patience is a family watchword, as this bodega thinks nothing of waiting twenty years before releasing a wine. Their "Crianzas" are aged like others' "Reservas"; the "Reservas" as long as others' "Gran Reservas"...and the ultimate accolade of "Gran Reserva" is accorded to only the very greatest vintages. Rarely are there more than three of these in a decade We did not tour here because we were blitzing through all the Haro wineries in one day. Take the tour because they have their own barrel-making operation. The only winery in La Rioja who does that. We spent 3 weeks in La Rioja tasting at 30 wineries and this is either #2 or #3 out of all of them. The price point in country is higher than most and for a damn good reason. They make spectacular wine. Do not waste your palate or your time/money with other wineries in Haro that cater to the blue-haired bus tour groups. This is wine heaven. It can be found in the US at specialty shops at a price level above $40 for the Crianza and above $50 for the reservas.

They use geothermal energy among many other concepts that allow Beronia to be 100% sustainable! Beronia is part of the Gonzalez Byass group and as a renowned wine in the US, my husband and I were extremely happy we had a chance to see it. We were lucky enough to meet with Matias- who was INCREDIBLY knowledgeable and affable, We could have talked for days! After a tour of the place along with enthralling talks about wine, the environment, and his career, we ended the tour by sampling some reds. It is not surprising that Bodegas Beronia has been recognized over the years as the best value producer of La Rioja Alta wine. Their Crianza is in virtually every pintxo bar we went to and that means more than 30 places in five major cities in the Basque Territories. Yes, we were very busy eating and drinking for 3 weeks. We purchased some bottles, large and small of the Crianza and had it in our hotel rooms throughout the trip. We ordered it at restaurants. It was our favorite red wine with meals. I took the English tour. The tour guide was super friendly and very knowledgeable. The winery is one of the most sustainable wineries in Spain, possibly at top the the list. They were not shy with the portions. The tasting also includes some snacks, they do not serve food so make sure you are not expecting to eat there. The views were phenomenal. We didn't get to do a walk of the vines because of the heat. Would have been added bonus to so that, nonetheless they allowed us to get near and see them and take photos which was perfect for us. Overall a great experience!!! Would go back when visiting that area or Spain. Will be buying the one state side as well!!!

The wines are complex and quite enjoyable. The tour was the big attraction. The management was very accommodating of our schedule. Ainhoa Mouriz Ibarra was our guide for the tasting and the tour. This noble Basque woman spoke elegantly about the history of wine in La Rioja. Her presentation had us enthralled. We could have stayed much longer that the 2 hours we did. She graced us with a sampling of a non-traditional/experimental wine using 100 year old local Garnacha grapes. It was startling in its quality. It was ageing in a cement egg. We sampled right from the barrel. Not for sale. Later she took us to another experimental wine in another cement egg for a "barrel" tasting. Once again spectacular wine. Once again, not for sale. This tour reinforced the concept of the rules of La Rioja where the production that bears the DOC must be of an exact terroir and grape mix. That does not limit winemakers from showing their skills in other ways with other wines, just not for sale under he DOC label. Totally recommend, but plan ahead and contact them before you visit.

The chant of "vinotourism" is omnipresent in la Rioja. Sad to see. It reduces the Old World charm to have visitors pay for the wineries to promote their product. What happened to the concept of the customer showing their appreciation through the purchase of the product? The bottle price-point at Bodegas Ramirez de la Piscina is really good and the wines were excellent. The Crianza and Reserva were our favorites. The Gran Reserva for the cost was superb. We did not drink a lot of whites while in Rioja, but this one was blended with Viura and two other white varietals which made it distinctive and very pleasant.

But the Roda I makes us happy as well. Staff here was as great as last time, friendly and helpful. Luckily we were able to bring the wine outside to the table, since we've had our Bulldog with. And there's another reason to come here. Their Olive Oil (they got two kinds) is divine. Especially the "Aubocassa". Hands down the best olive oil we've ever had. And we've had many.... So smooth and so so fruity. You could just drink it. But put on some bread or crackers with some sea salt....there's heaven. Bought 12 bottles this time. Well priced too. All in all a Bodega we really love. Great wine - the olive oil as well. Fair prices, great looking wine cellar, friendly staff. The whole package. We will be back.

The woman (I forgot her name) was extremely knowledgable about the wines. We tasted Roda and Roda I and she also let us taste the olive oil they sell.
