My friend had invited me to the open house that they were having at the Center for Sustainable Community (CSC). I was intrigued with the concept of living off the land and leaving a small footprint. I've always wanted to be able to do that but didnt quite know how. The location wasn't too difficult to get to from Chicago. It was about a 90 minute drive and there was little to no traffic on the way there. The directions on their website made it easy to find. https://midwestpermaculture.com/tour-midwest-permaculture-stelle-il-center-sustainable-community/ I was blown away by how different the community looked from the surrounding areas. On one side of the road was corn fields and open grassland. Then upon making a left turn, we're in modern suburbia only in this area most of the community is all about sustainable living. I was in awe by how easy it seemed to live a modern life while living off the land. It was great. The small community also seemed like something I wanted to be part of. A small neighborhood with friendly helpful neighbors. Maybe one day I'll be part of this secret cool society? Bill and Becky were wonderful hosts to us. Bill gave us a tour of the entire community and provided a thorough history of how things were as well as the future plans for the land. Lunch was delicious and tasted so fresh and I made sure I got a copy of the recipe so I could replicate it when I got home to feed my friends. They are doing great things here and I can't wait to come back in a few years to check out the progress of the community and the tiny camp homes they are building here. I took Midwest Permaculture's live, online design course winter of 2022 after just completing a PDC with another permaculture school. While both experiences were edifying and I learned SO much from my first course, Midwest Permaculture's course expanded my systems-thinking and gave me design skills that I immediately put to use. Bill and the Midwest Permaculture team earned every nickel I spent on the course - in fact, the investment has come back to me ten-fold so far! The material was well presented and formatted, covering a wide range of topics and hitting all the permie principles. The instruction was executed in a very accessible, down-to-earth way that anyone, even non-permie people, can understand. Regardless of the path that has brought you to permaculture (sustainable living, gardening, design, whatever!), Midwest Permaculture can teach you how to analyze, design, and live by systems that care for people, care for the earth, and care for the future. You will NOT regret investing in this course! I do warn you, however, you may enjoy it so much that you decide to continue your education with them like I did. Taking the certification course at Midwest Permaculture was a life-changing experience for me. I already thought that I was on the right path, trying to live sustainably and to steward the earth, but taking the PDC course here opened my eyes to just how much I do not know about life and the planet. Bill and Becky Wilson have a passion for this subject material matched only by their commitment to spreading the good word. They are permaculture evangelists, but for the simple difference than unlike most evangelists, they aren't forcing their beliefs on anyone but rather showing you a path and knowing that you'll walk it. The best facility for learning Permaculture in the Midwest and surrounding regions. I did a Permaculture Design Course at Midwest Permaculture recently and it was exactly what I had been looking for. Bill and Becky run their courses with great enthusiasm and care to satisfy all in attendance. The food provided is simply amazing and you may find yourself asking for the recipe every single meal! Each day has a new opportunity to learn how we as humans can reconnect ourselves to the land we live on and how to harmonize with others in our community. What makes Midwest Permaculture so great is that it is located in Stelle which offers a unique experience that we often don't find in the suburban establishment. Midwest Permaculture attracts wonderful people and my course was full of people that I will never forget! The sincerity to offer positive impact during your course at Midwest Permaculture impressed me the most. I've tried other Permaculture courses in the Midwest and it was a disappointment compared to the efforts Midwest Permaculture puts into their work. I thoroughly enjoyed my Midwest Permaculture course in Stelle. They surpassed my expectations in ways I couldn't have imagined. I thought I would be learning mostly about gardening sustainably, and I did, but I also learned about simple and complex lifestyle changes, how permaculture can change societies and the world, and was treated with understanding and respect.
