During my appointments, more than once out of nowhere (we were not chatting about politics), the chiropractor pointed out that Obama is a Muslim. Out of nowhere. I don't care about his political leanings, but he should leave them at home. Nobody with any professional sense makes inflammatory political statements at the office. And then there is the receptionist. Batshit crazy. There was a news story about a lesbian playing on the TV in the waiting room. She shook her head and said to me "I know God gave the gays AIDS to punish them, but I don't know why he gives it to little babies." That was the last straw. I ledt and never went back. Not only is he a BRILLIANT surgeon but he actually CARES about the well-being of his patients. Prior to surgery, Dr. Galligan clearly explained the procedure, providing models and even drawing diagrams for me to better understand. He patiently explained the ct-scans, using words I understood. His "right-hand," Nurse Samantha, was on top of everything - from personally scheduling every appointment to providing hospital phone numbers for needed paperwork. She was even able to request a temporary handicapped driving permit for me. Sam was cheerful, organized, flexible, and always available - she gave us the number straight to her desk. Dr. Galligan visited with us before surgery, patiently reassuring me and answering my last-minute questions. And, then he visited after the surgery (when I had mental clarity again) to explain how the procedure had gone. He wanted me physically, mentally and emotionally ready before having me dismissed from the hospital to begin recuperating at home. My recovery timelines were realistic, and their expectations of me were reasonable. No boot - just a big, well-padded calf bandage. The joint was weight-bearing right out of surgery, so I could attend to my own toileting. I HAD to keep my ankle elevated 24-7 for two weeks. He said healing the surgical cut on top of my ankle would be the most challenging part of the recovery process, so I followed his instructions, to a tee. I also received Physical Therapy to regain my ankle strength and range of motion. I just followed their instructions - simple. Also, just as importantly, Dr. Galligan and his support staff were CONSISTENTLY POSITIVE and reassuring. I could not have asked for -nor did I ever imagine I would be gifted- such a professional and empathetic TEAM!

Today, I visited MD West One for a second opinion regarding a work-related injury affecting my…read moreright shoulder, arm, and hand, including symptoms of pain, swelling, purple/blue discoloration, and numbness. My goal was to gain clarity on my condition, as I previously felt I was not receiving clear answers--only recommendations for procedures--despite the impact this injury has on my ability to perform my job. The check-in process was efficient and professional. After being called back, I was weighed and taken to an evaluation room. Approximately ten minutes later, a nurse practitioner entered. She was friendly and took the time to ask detailed questions about the incident. She conducted an evaluation and asked whether my original provider had performed an X-ray of my hand or only a visual assessment. When I explained that only a visual evaluation had been done, she expressed concern that imaging had not been completed. She also stated that, based on her review of my chart, I did not have carpal tunnel syndrome but instead may have a rheumatoid autoimmune condition. This was new information to me and had not previously been communicated by my original specialist. I did note that my primary care provider at Methodist Hospital had once mentioned the possibility of an autoimmune issue but had not confirmed a diagnosis. The nurse practitioner indicated she would step out to conduct further research and return with additional information. Approximately fifteen minutes later, Dr. Jeffrey Tiedeman entered the room. He asked questions that I had already addressed and referenced my visit to the emergency room due to loss of feeling in my right hand. At that point, the experience shifted. He examined my hands and stated that an X-ray was needed to confirm a carpal tunnel diagnosis. I asked whether this could be performed during my visit, and he instructed me to follow up with my current provider instead. I explained that my current provider had not recommended or ordered an X-ray. I asked again for assistance, and my request was declined. It became clear to me that my concerns were not being fully addressed, and I did not feel supported in obtaining answers about my condition. Both the doctor and nurse practitioner then left the room without explanation and did not return. I waited approximately fifteen minutes before realizing the visit had concluded without closure, guidance, or next steps. This experience was disappointing, as I sought a second opinion to better understand my condition and receive appropriate direction for treatment. Unfortunately, the lack of communication and follow-through did not meet those expectations.
